Huston Danker Case: Affair, Evidence, and Life Sentence

Huston Danker is an Iowa man who pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for shooting 42-year-old farmer Ryan Cooper in June 2021, a killing he planned over several months with Cooper’s wife, Karina, so the two could be together and collect more than $500,000 in life insurance. The Huston Danker case ended on October 3, 2025, when a Sixth Judicial District judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole.¹

Who Huston Danker Is

Danker is originally from Traer, a small town in Tama County, Iowa. He was in his mid-twenties when he killed Ryan Cooper and 27 at the time of his arrest, by which point he had moved to Shellsburg.² His connection to Karina Cooper started when she began cutting his hair; it moved to Snapchat and, by February 2021, into a sexual relationship. When police first interviewed him on the day of the shooting, Danker denied any affair and described himself as Karina’s “gay best friend.”³

The Killing of Ryan Cooper

Ryan Cooper was shot twice in the face in the early morning of June 18, 2021, while sleeping in a recliner at his home near Traer. Three of his children were asleep upstairs. Deputies found no signs of forced entry and recovered a single .22-caliber shell casing near the recliner. A medical examiner ruled the death a homicide.⁴

When Danker pleaded guilty, he admitted he and Karina had planned the killing together over four to five months.⁵

The Affair and the Motive

Snapchat messages recovered by investigators showed the affair stretched back to at least December 2020.⁶ Prosecutors argued the pair wanted to start a new life together, funded by the life insurance policies that named Karina as sole beneficiary and totaled more than $500,000. Karina’s bank accounts were frequently overdrawn in the months before the killing, and testimony from her trial described her frustration with what she called a lack of financial support from Ryan.⁴

The Evidence Against Him

Messages the Night of the Killing

At 3:31 a.m. on June 18, Karina sent Danker a heart emoji. He replied, “More than [expletive] life.” A minute later he told her his phone was “going down.”⁶ About an hour before Karina called 911, Danker wrote, “Remember those casings. No ifs, ands or buts.” Karina answered, “Absolutely. 100 percent.”⁷ Danker then said, “Okay, babe, seriously putting the phone down. Have to get this [expletive] done.” Karina replied with one word: “Go.”⁸

Search History

Investigators recovered deleted searches from Danker’s devices. In May 2021, about a month before the killing, he had searched for ways to kill a person, including with antifreeze and sodium sulfate. After the shooting, he searched for how to delete Snapchat messages, how to get away with murder, and how long data forensics take.⁶

The Murder Weapon

Firearms examiner Kristin Hart matched the shell casing from the scene to a Ruger 10/22 rifle, serial number 0003-61269. The rifle had been Danker’s. In late 2023, he handed three guns, including the Ruger, to a former coworker, Bradley Sieck, for safekeeping while he moved in with a girlfriend. Sieck kept them in a closet and, in the spring of 2024, turned them over to the Tama County Sheriff’s Office, which sent them to the Iowa DCI crime lab.⁴

Physical Traces

Shoes with a diamond-pattern tread taken from Danker’s home matched a shoe print left at the crime scene.⁴

Arrest, Alibi, and Last-Minute Guilty Plea

The Tama County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Major Crime Unit worked the case for more than two and a half years before making arrests.⁵ Karina Cooper was arrested at her Traer home on February 19, 2024. Danker was arrested in Cedar Rapids on April 29, 2024, and charged with first-degree murder. He was held at the Tama County Jail.⁹

Danker initially pleaded not guilty. He planned an alibi defense, saying he was at his parents’ home in Traer when Ryan was shot.² Prosecutors subpoenaed him to testify at Karina’s trial, but he signaled through his attorney that he would invoke the Fifth Amendment.¹⁰

On August 12, 2025, moments before jury selection was set to begin in his own trial in Johnson County District Court, Danker changed his plea and admitted to first-degree murder for acting in concert with Karina Cooper. His attorney, Leon Spies, said there was no plea agreement and that Danker had chosen to plead guilty to “accept responsibility for his role” in the killing.²

The Life Sentence

Chief Judge Lars Anderson sentenced Danker on October 3, 2025, at the Tama County Courthouse in Toledo, Iowa. The sentence was a mandatory life term without parole, along with $150,000 in restitution to Ryan Cooper’s estate.¹

Danker declined to speak. Judge Anderson said he gave Danker “some credit” for the guilty plea in what he called a “senseless” crime, but said the plea did not “atone” for the impact of the murder on the victim’s family.¹ Ryan Cooper’s sister, Michelle Wilson, told Danker at the hearing, “I think you’re a psychopath, just like your accomplice. You couldn’t appreciate the life you had. You wanted someone else’s. You wanted Ryan’s life. You wanted Ryan’s dream.” She ended by telling him to “go to hell.” Spies described his client as someone who had been “blinded, emotionally and spiritually and morally” and said Danker had pledged to use his time in prison to “improve himself.”¹¹

Karina Cooper’s Parallel Conviction

Karina Cooper’s trial was moved to Linn County. She took the stand, tearfully calling Danker a “manipulative lover” who had drawn her into a fantasy of a new family and testifying that he had talked about killing Ryan “several times.” Prosecutors countered with the digital evidence, forensic findings, and witnesses who said Karina had previously threatened to “shoot [Ryan] in the face.”⁴

On July 11, 2025, the jury found her guilty of first-degree murder after more than three hours of deliberation.¹² Judge Anderson denied her motion for a new trial on September 19, 2025, and sentenced her the same day to life without parole, with $150,000 in restitution to Ryan Cooper’s estate and nearly $30,000 to victim compensation programs.⁵
