Is Jeff Lowe in Jail? Current Status, DUI, and Joe Exotic Case

Jeff Lowe, the exotic animal exhibitor known from Netflix’s “Tiger King,” is not in jail. He’s living in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico, where he and his wife Lauren run a private zoo. His U.S. legal troubles have been serious and sustained, but the biggest case against him was civil, not criminal, and his older criminal convictions ended in probation, suspended sentences, and unresolved bench warrants rather than prison time.1KOCO. Why the Federal Animal Case Didn’t Send Him to Prison

The largest action against Lowe was a civil enforcement suit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice in November 2020, alleging violations of the Endangered Species Act and the Animal Welfare Act at the former Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park and the successor facility, Tiger King Park in Thackerville, Oklahoma. Because the DOJ pursued it as a civil matter, the available remedies were injunctions, forfeiture of animals, and monetary sanctions, not incarceration.2U.S. Department of Justice. A federal judge ordered the Lowes in January 2021 to stop breeding big cats, surrender cubs, and cease exhibiting animals. When they didn’t comply, the court held them in contempt in March 2021 and imposed a $1,000-per-day fine in May. Court records at that point indicated that 60 of roughly 200 animals at the facility were unaccounted for.3ABC7. Jeff Lowe of Tiger King, Lauren, Search and Seizure4KBZK. On May 20, 2021, federal agents executed a search and seizure warrant at Tiger King Park, removing 68 protected big cats, including lions, tigers, lion-tiger hybrids, and a jaguar. A DOJ affidavit described animals with high anxiety, fur and weight loss, and untreated wounds.5ABC News. The case ended on December 23, 2021, with a consent decree in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma. Jeff and Lauren Lowe are permanently prohibited from exhibiting animals and barred from ever applying for a USDA license or registration. They terminated their interests in 97 endangered or threatened animals and affirmed abandonment of 41 more covered by the Animal Welfare Act, agreeing not to contest civil forfeiture.7U.S. Department of Justice. Older Criminal Cases That Ended in Probation

Lowe has criminal convictions, but neither one put him behind bars for any significant period.

In 2007, he was indicted on four counts of fraud for allegedly acquiring more than $1 million in goods intended for a nonprofit, Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse, between 2003 and 2005, then selling the items out of his warehouse. He pleaded guilty in 2008 to one count of mail fraud under a plea agreement. He faced up to 20 years and a $250,000 fine; he received one year of probation and was ordered to donate $10,000 to the nonprofit in lieu of a fine.9Island Packet. Jeff Lowe Fraud Case

His second criminal case came out of Las Vegas. In November 2017, after authorities raided his home and seized two tiger cubs and a lemur he had been using for paid photo ops under the name “The Jungle Bus,” he was charged with three counts of unlawful possession of wild animals and operating without a business license. He entered a no-contest plea in April 2018, was found guilty, and received a suspended jail sentence with a “stay out of trouble” order along with restitution and surrender of the animals.10KTNV. He didn’t appear in court to show compliance, and a bench warrant was issued in November 2018. As of June 2021, four Las Vegas Municipal Court bench warrants were outstanding against him; resolving them would have required posting $20,500.11Las Vegas Review-Journal. The 2021 DUI Arrest

Weeks after the federal seizure of his animals, Jeff and Lauren Lowe were both arrested for driving under the influence in the early hours of June 5, 2021, in Oklahoma City. Police had seen a white Range Rover drive over a curb, and the couple reportedly switched seats before officers reached them. Lowe, then 56, blew a 0.18 on a breathalyzer, more than twice Oklahoma’s legal limit, and was also charged with improper lane change. Both posted bail and were released the same day.12Oxygen. His Role in the Joe Exotic Case

Lowe was a cooperating government witness in the federal prosecution of Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as Joe Exotic. After ownership of the zoo transferred to Lowe following a $1 million judgment against Maldonado-Passage, Lowe acted as an intermediary during the murder-for-hire investigation, receiving a package containing the personal phone of alleged hitman Allen Glover and later surrendering it to federal agents. He testified at Joe Exotic’s trial.14U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. United States v. Maldonado-Passage

In April 2022, Maldonado-Passage’s legal team filed a motion for a new trial accusing Lowe, Lauren Lowe, Allen Glover, and James Garretson of a “conspiracy to commit perjury” and accusing prosecutors of Brady violations. The defense submitted 169 exhibits.15Oxygen. Where Jeff Lowe Is Now

After the consent decree ended the federal animal case in late 2021, the Lowes left the United States. As of late 2024 reporting, they were operating a private zoo in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Lowe told reporters, “We knew we wanted to still work with animals.”1KOCO. Where Is the Cast of Tiger King Now

The consent decree is still in force. It permanently bars Jeff and Lauren Lowe from exhibiting animals in the United States and from applying for any USDA license.7U.S. Department of Justice.
