Jaime Osuna is a California inmate serving life without the possibility of parole for the 2011 torture-killing of Yvette Pena in Bakersfield, and he is now awaiting trial for a second murder: the 2019 decapitation and mutilation of his cellmate, Luis Romero, inside Corcoran State Prison. Heavily tattooed, self-styled as a satanist, and the subject of a six-part KGET podcast titled The Man With A Thousand Faces, Osuna has drawn national attention both for the brutality of his crimes and for the prison failures that allowed the second one to happen.1KGET. The 2011 Murder of Yvette Pena
On November 13, 2011, a maintenance worker at the El Morocco Motel on Golden State Avenue in Bakersfield found the body of Yvette Pena, a 37-year-old mother of six. She had been gagged, and stabbing instruments were still protruding from her back. The coroner attributed her death to a combination of blunt-force injuries, sharp-force injuries, and asphyxia. Prosecutors said the killing involved torture.2Bakersfield Now. Man Accused of Stabbing Woman to Death in 2011 Pleads Guilty
Osuna became the suspect after his wife called 911 on November 8, telling dispatchers she feared for her safety and that Osuna had claimed to have killed a woman at the motel.3KGET. She Kinda Looks Like Your Wife He was arrested on November 18. In a jailhouse interview shortly afterward, the then-23-year-old denied the killing but described himself as “a violent person with violent tendencies.”4Bakersfield Now. His trial opened on March 27, 2017, in Kern County Superior Court. The next day he pleaded guilty to five felonies: murder, attempted murder, making threats, assault with a deadly weapon, and trying to dissuade a witness. The last charge concerned his efforts to keep his former wife from testifying.5CBS Austin. The 2019 Killing of Luis Romero at Corcoran
On March 9, 2019, staff at Corcoran State Prison in Kings County found that Osuna had killed his cellmate, 44-year-old Luis Romero. Using a makeshift knife made from a razor blade wrapped in string, Osuna decapitated Romero, removed one of his eyes, an ear, a finger, and a portion of his lung, and sliced open both sides of his mouth to create an exaggerated smile. When guards reached the cell, Osuna was wearing a necklace made from parts of Romero’s body. On the walls, written in blood, were the phrases “hahahahaha” and “the man with a thousand faces.”9NBC Los Angeles. Romero had served 27 years for a second-degree murder committed as a teenager in Compton. He was transferred to Corcoran from Mule Creek State Prison on March 7, 2019, and placed in Osuna’s cell two days before his death. He had been nearing parole eligibility.10Los Angeles Times. The pairing was not Osuna’s first act of extreme violence in custody. He had already been charged with attempted murder for a previous attack on another inmate and had been caught with weapons, including a five-inch metal shank and a “hatchet-like” weapon, while awaiting trial for the Pena killing.11WFTV. In April 2019, Kings County prosecutors filed four felony charges: murder, torture, and mayhem, with special allegations that included his prior murder conviction. Kings County Assistant District Attorney Phil Esbenshade said no plea offers would be made. Osuna was arraigned on April 25, 2019.13ABC 30. Graphic Details Emerge in Case of Corcoran Inmate’s Murder
How the Attack Went Undetected
Guards were required to conduct periodic cell checks overnight. Two officers falsely reported having seen Romero alive during their rounds on March 9, and two more failed to flag that the first pair had not actually completed the counts. The attack would have taken hours. A white bedsheet had been draped over the cell bars in violation of prison policy, blocking any view inside.10Los Angeles Times. In May 2021, the California Office of the Inspector General called the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation’s internal investigation “shoddy.” The OIG found that the lead special agent resisted attorney recommendations on evidence gathering, failed to interview key witnesses, and never investigated why Osuna and Romero were housed together. The CDCR disputed those findings and said it had conducted a “thorough and complete investigation from the very beginning.”14Newsweek. Satanist Jaime Osuna Behead Luis Romero9NBC Los Angeles. Lawsuits by Romero’s Mother
Luis Romero’s mother, Dora Solares, has brought multiple federal civil rights lawsuits over her son’s death. The first, filed in 2020, named CDCR officials including former Secretary Ralph Diaz, the Corcoran warden, and Sgt. Joseph Burnes. It alleged that staff ignored protocols requiring a committee to decide whether inmates could safely share a cell. Family attorney Justin Sterling said the CDCR was “on notice, with respect to Mr. Osuna’s propensity for extreme violence.”15KGET. A separate suit alleged that Sgt. Burnes and other guards used personal cellphones to photograph Romero’s corpse and shared the images with colleagues, inmates, and civilians by text and AirDrop for what the complaint described as “morbid gossip, ill-will and malice.” In March 2024, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California denied Burnes’ motion to dismiss, rejecting his qualified-immunity defense and finding that the alleged conduct “shocks the conscience” and that a family’s right to non-interference with the remembrance of a deceased relative is “so ingrained in our traditions that it is constitutionally protected.”18Prison Legal News. Why There Is Still No Trial
After his 2019 arraignment, Osuna refused to cooperate with court-appointed psychiatrists. Dr. Brandi Mathews and Dr. Kevin Perry concluded he could neither understand the proceedings against him nor assist in his defense. Dr. Mathews noted that a reduction in his medication had coincided with heightened paranoia and refusal to leave his cell.19KGET. The Grisly Crimes of the Man With a Thousand Faces In January 2021, Kings County Judge Randy Edwards ruled him incompetent to stand trial, suspended criminal proceedings, and ordered him transferred to a state hospital or the psychiatric inpatient program at Salinas Valley State Prison, authorizing involuntary antipsychotic medication.20KGET. Psychiatrists later found him restored to competency and proceedings resumed. Osuna then fired his attorneys, and in late 2022 Miles A. Harris was retained. As of May 2025, more than six years after Romero’s death, no trial date or preliminary hearing has been set. At a May 14, 2025 hearing in Kings County Superior Court before Judge Marianne C. Gilbert, prosecution and defense agreed to reconvene in mid-August 2025 for a status update. The death penalty remains on the table; prosecutors have not said whether they will pursue it. Harris withdrew a motion to strike the death penalty at the May hearing but indicated he could refile it. Judge Gilbert also ordered that defense counsel be given confidential, unmonitored visits with Osuna at Corcoran after Harris complained that visitation areas were equipped with cameras and microphones, and the defense is seeking gag orders over the unauthorized leak of photographs, videos, and prison files tied to the case.22KGET. 6 Years After Grisly Slaying, Osuna Case Continues to Drag On
The “Thousand Faces” Persona
Osuna’s appearance has changed steadily behind bars. He has covered his face in tattoos, including a pentagram on his forehead and a “Joker” smile, and now looks almost nothing like the man arrested in 2011. He has described himself as a satanist and spoken of collecting “trophies” from attacks on other inmates.12The Independent.
