Jamie Spears is the father of pop star Britney Spears and served as the conservator of her person and estate from February 2008 until his suspension in September 2021. For nearly 13 years, the Jamie Spears conservatorship gave him sweeping legal authority over his daughter’s finances, career, medical care, and daily life. A Los Angeles judge suspended him in 2021 after Britney publicly described the arrangement as abusive, terminated the conservatorship entirely that November, and the remaining legal dispute between father and daughter ended with a confidential settlement in April 2024.
How the Conservatorship Began
In January 2008, Britney Spears was placed on two involuntary psychiatric holds under California’s 5150 law during a public personal crisis. On February 1, 2008, a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge granted Jamie Spears an emergency temporary conservatorship over her person and estate, filed under case number BP 108870. Attorney Andrew Wallet was appointed co-conservator of the estate.1Billboard. Britney Spears Conservatorship Timeline

What Powers He Held and What He Was Paid
As conservator of both the person and the estate, Jamie Spears controlled Britney’s finances, managed her business dealings, directed her career, and oversaw decisions about her personal care, medical treatment, and daily life. Court filings from her legal team described the control as “microscopic,” alleging he approved or denied expenditures as minor as vacations and set her allowance.3NBC News. Britney’s 2021 Court Testimony
On June 23, 2021, Britney Spears addressed Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny directly, speaking publicly about her conservatorship for the first time. She called the arrangement “abusive” and made a series of specific allegations.
She told the court she had been forced to keep an intrauterine device to prevent pregnancy, saying “this so-called team won’t let me go to the doctor to take it out because they don’t want me to have children.” She said that after she tried to cancel a Las Vegas residency, she was put on lithium against her wishes, a medication that she said made her feel “drunk” and unable to think clearly. She said she had no control over her money, car, phone, or passport.7Variety. Britney Spears Full Statement Conservatorship
She directly implicated her father, telling the court he “loved the control to hurt his own daughter 100,000%” and had approved decisions including placing her in a $60,000-per-month rehabilitation program. “I shouldn’t be in a conservatorship if I can work and provide money and work for myself,” she said, adding that everyone involved “should be in jail.”7Variety. Surveillance Allegations
In September 2021, new allegations emerged that Jamie Spears had authorized covert surveillance of his daughter. The claims, featured in the documentary Controlling Britney Spears, centered on Black Box Security, a firm Jamie had hired.
Alex Vlasov, a former Black Box employee, alleged that for roughly nine years conservators bugged Britney’s phone and home. He told The New York Times that more than 180 hours of audio were secretly recorded from her bedroom at her Thousand Oaks home, including conversations with her children. According to Vlasov, an employee duct-taped a recording device behind furniture and attached a separate battery pack to keep it running.8Newsweek. Former FBI special agent Sherine Ebadi, hired by Britney’s legal team, interviewed Vlasov and reviewed audio, emails, and text messages he provided. In a court declaration, Ebadi called Vlasov “highly credible” and concluded that Jamie Spears “engaged in and directed others to engage in unconscionable violations” of Britney’s privacy and civil liberties. Ebadi noted that California requires the consent of all parties for recording private conversations and said the conduct could implicate federal or state criminal law.9Nine.com.au. Jamie Spears denied the allegations. In a June 2022 sworn declaration, he stated: “I never conducted or authorised any surveillance of Britney’s bedroom at any time, including during the conservatorship.” Through his attorneys, he maintained that his actions were “well within the parameters of the authority conferred upon him by the court” and were performed with the knowledge and consent of Britney and her court-appointed attorney.9Nine.com.au. Suspension and Termination
After Britney’s June 2021 statement, Judge Brenda Penny granted her permission to hire her own attorney for the first time, and she retained Mathew Rosengart of Greenberg Traurig. On August 12, 2021, Jamie Spears agreed to step down as conservator of the estate, though disputes over the process continued.2Biography. Britney Spears Conservatorship Timeline Explained

The Post-Conservatorship Dispute and 2024 Settlement
In January 2022, Britney’s legal team filed court documents accusing Jamie Spears of paying himself over $6 million during the conservatorship, surveilling his daughter, and committing financial misconduct. The filings alleged, among other things, that Jamie had purchased a Louisiana lot from his daughter’s estate for about $59,000 and later sold it along with two other parcels for $275,000.5NBC News. Jamie Spears denied all allegations of wrongdoing. His attorney, Alex Weingarten, said the court had approved every step of the conservatorship and that Jamie “loves his daughter very much and worked tirelessly to protect her.” Weingarten also said Jamie “would have liked to have had a trial so that the truth came out.”12ABC7 New York. Laws Passed in Response
The public scrutiny of the Spears case prompted legislative action. On September 30, 2021, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 1194, which reformed state conservatorship laws. The law grants conservatees the right to select their own counsel and requires attorneys to act as “zealous advocates” for their clients’ expressed wishes rather than substituting their own judgment. It also allows any interested person with personal knowledge to petition a court to investigate alleged abuse by a conservator and sets civil penalties of up to $10,000 per act of abuse by professional fiduciaries.16Bloomberg Tax. At the federal level, Representatives Charlie Crist and Nancy Mace introduced the Freedom and Right to Emancipate from Exploitation Act in July 2021. Where Things Stand Now
Jamie Spears has had serious health problems since leaving the conservatorship. In November 2018, he was hospitalized for 28 days after his colon spontaneously ruptured, requiring emergency surgery. In the summer of 2023, he was hospitalized for several weeks with a severe bacterial infection in his leg, which led to the amputation of the leg in late 2023. The amputation followed a knee replacement from the mid-2000s and five unsuccessful follow-up surgeries to address complications.19People. Britney Spears Dad Had Leg Amputated20Page Six.
