Jaylin Brazier is a Detroit-area man convicted in May 2024 of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of his 17-year-old cousin by marriage, Zion Foster, who vanished from Eastpointe, Michigan, in January 2022. Her body was never recovered, making the prosecution one of Michigan’s rare no-body homicide convictions. On June 3, 2024, Wayne County Judge Donald Knapp sentenced Brazier to 43 to 100 years in prison, well above the state’s recommended guidelines.
What Happened to Zion Foster
Zion Rachelle Foster finished a shift at the Detroit Wing Company in Eastpointe on the evening of January 4, 2022. Around 10:45 p.m., she left home and got into a white sedan driven by Brazier. At 12:59 a.m. on January 5, she texted her mother, Ciera Milton, the word “omw” — on my way. She was never heard from again.1NBC News. Her family reported her missing on January 10. She had run away before but always kept in contact, so her silence alarmed relatives.2ClickOnDetroit. Investigators traced Foster’s cellphone location to Brazier’s Detroit home, and on January 19, 2022, Detroit Police Chief James White publicly named him a person of interest. Once in custody, Brazier changed his story. He admitted picking Foster up that night, said the two had smoked marijuana at his Detroit home, and claimed she stopped breathing. He said he panicked and placed her body in a dumpster in Highland Park rather than calling for help.4ClickOnDetroit. The Lying Charges and Early Release
Brazier was arraigned on January 24, 2022, in 38th District Court on two felony counts of lying to a peace officer during a criminal investigation. Bond was set at $250,000. On March 30, 2022, Judge Edward Servitto sentenced him to 23 months to four years in prison, rejecting a defense request for probation. Servitto told Brazier the sentence “hardly reflects the injury that you’ve accomplished” and that his lies had forced Foster’s family through “unnecessary trauma, despair, heartache for no reason.” Brazier was released in January 2023 after serving less than ten months, having completed a special alternative incarceration program — a boot camp — approved by the sentencing judge. The Landfill Search That Found Nothing
After Brazier described dumping the body, investigators tracked the specific dumpster and trash truck to the Pine Tree Acres Landfill in Lenox Township. On May 31, 2022, the Detroit Police Department launched “Operation Justice for Zion,” a multi-agency effort involving the FBI.6Bridge Detroit. For about six months, crews sifted more than 7,500 tons of trash at depths reaching 50 feet, in hazmat suits and respirators. Total costs approached $1 million. The Murder Charges and Trial
After an 18-month investigation, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office charged Brazier with second-degree murder and tampering with evidence on June 13, 2023.8Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office. The case was entirely circumstantial.
The Prosecution’s Case
Elsey called 32 witnesses. His theory: Brazier had been grooming Foster for a sexual relationship and killed her when she resisted. “Inside that house that night there was some sort of sexual encounter that was resisted. The state introduced more than 4,000 text messages between the two, many sexually explicit, along with links to “cousin porn” found on Brazier’s phone.10Charley Project. Digital forensics were central. Brazier’s search history included queries about trash truck compactors, how police track phones and missing persons, whether police can seize a phone without a warrant, and whether someone can be charged with murder if a body is never found.12FOX 2 Detroit. Brazier’s ex-girlfriend, Katrina Smith, testified that when he picked her up from work at 2:37 a.m. on January 5, 2022, she saw a large, deep, bloody scratch on his collarbone. He blamed the family cat, but Smith said the injury didn’t look like a cat scratch.13FOX 2 Detroit. Forensic pathologist Dr. Leigh Hlavaty testified that Foster’s asthma typically produces visible signs of a breathing struggle, contradicting Brazier’s account that she simply stopped breathing. Hlavaty said nothing in Foster’s medical history supported the kind of sudden death Brazier described.12FOX 2 Detroit. The Defense
Defense attorney Brian Brown called no witnesses, and Brazier did not testify. Brown argued the state could not prove what happened inside the house and characterized Brazier’s actions as driven by “fear and panic” rather than guilt. He suggested Foster may have died from a seizure, citing her history, and floated the possibility that the marijuana was laced.14Detroit News. Brown also attacked the investigation, pointing to what he called an improperly executed search warrant, the failure to collect the marijuana, the absence of DNA testing or luminol analysis, and errors in documenting Brazier’s statements. In closing, he described the state’s case as built on “theories, hypotheses, innuendos, assumptions, gut feelings and hair on the back of your neck.”14Detroit News. The Verdict

Sentencing: 43 to 100 Years
On June 3, 2024, Judge Knapp imposed 38 to 90 years for second-degree murder and a consecutive 5 to 10 years for tampering with evidence, a total of 43 to 100 years. Brazier received credit for 365 days already served.15WXYZ Detroit. Jaylin Brazier to Be Sentenced Monday in Murder of Zion Foster
The sentence departed sharply upward from guidelines of roughly 18 to 31 years. Knapp cited Brazier’s refusal to accept responsibility and the nature of his relationship with the victim, saying Brazier “viewed her as a potential source of pleasure,” “took advantage of her young age and naivete,” treated her as a “liability,” and disposed of her “in a heartless manner.” Knapp added that Brazier’s cooperation with police only came after his lies stopped working.16C&G Newspapers. Speaking before sentence was imposed, Brazier acknowledged being “reckless” and “inconsiderate” but did not admit to murder. “I don’t feel like what defines a person is the mistakes we’ve made in our past because we all make them,” he said. “Some bigger than others, but it’s really the lessons we take into our future. Ciera Milton told the court: “He stole from me and he stole from my babies. And he stole from the world what would have been and what should have been a great human being. Where Brazier Is Now
Brazier is serving his sentence in the Michigan Department of Corrections. With a minimum term of 43 years, he will not be eligible for parole consideration until well into the 2060s.
