Jeanine Cammarata Case: Murder, Husband’s Trial, and Plea Deal

The Jeanine Cammarata murder case ended with her estranged husband, Michael Cammarata, and his girlfriend, Ayisha Egea, convicted for beating the 37-year-old Staten Island teacher to death on March 30, 2019, burning her body, and hiding the remains in a storage unit on Staten Island. Michael was convicted of second-degree murder in October 2021 and sentenced to 23 years to life. Egea pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and received nine years.

Who Jeanine Cammarata Was

Jeanine Cammarata taught first grade at P.S. 29 in Castleton Corners and had previously taught at P.S. 18 in West Brighton. She also worked part time at a Dollar Tree.¹ She was the mother of three: an older son from her first marriage, and two younger children, ages three and seven, with Michael Cammarata.²

The marriage was violent. After the separation, Michael stalked her, following her by car with his headlights off and sending messages a source described as “very sexual, very aggressive.” Jeanine obtained an order of protection but later dropped it; her landlord told reporters Michael had not initially complied and police had to intervene. Sources close to Jeanine said she had told people she feared her husband might “someday kill her.”³

Divorce Papers and the Killing

Jeanine had consulted a divorce lawyer more than a year before her death. On March 28, 2019, she formally served Michael with divorce papers while he was picking up one of the children from school.⁴ There was no formal custody order in place. After she left the family home, she had allowed the children to stay with Michael because she lacked stable housing, but when he was evicted and moved them to a Queens apartment with Egea, she lost meaningful access and filed for custody and support. A court appearance was set for Monday, April 1.⁵

On the evening of Saturday, March 30, two days after being served, Jeanine drove from Staten Island to Queens to see her children. She arrived at the apartment complex shortly before 10:00 p.m.⁶ According to Egea’s own statement to police, an argument turned physical. Michael struck Jeanine, knocked her unconscious, dragged her into the apartment, and punched her again when she came to. The medical examiner determined the cause of death to be blunt force injuries to the head and asphyxiation.⁷

Prosecutors would later argue the motive was financial. Michael and Egea wanted to stop the divorce to protect his salary, pension, and benefits, and to keep him from losing the children.⁴

How the Body Was Found

The body stayed in the apartment overnight. Building surveillance captured Michael struggling to move a shopping cart holding a large black plastic bag, with Egea holding the door open. The next morning, the pair were recorded moving the bag, now inside a blue plastic bin, toward the parking lot.⁷

Prosecutors said the pair drove the body to South Jersey, where Michael burned the remains. He then took the bin to Extra Space Storage on Arden Avenue near Arthur Kill Road in Arden Heights and placed it in a rented unit.⁸ Air fresheners were placed around the bin to mask the odor.⁹ Storage-facility footage showed Michael dragging the bag into the unit while Egea, her children, and Jeanine’s own children were with him.⁷

Jeanine’s boyfriend, Aaron Suchecki, was the last person to see her alive before she left for Queens. He reported her missing when she didn’t return. She also missed both of her jobs and the April 1 custody hearing. In the days after her death, texts sent from her phone tried to stall the search. Suchecki got one saying “Don’t contact me.”⁷ Her close friend Jessica Pobega received a message reading, “I have t.e kids … I apologize. I have to do this for the children.” Pobega didn’t believe it was Jeanine writing.¹

Michael admitted to police during questioning that he had hit Jeanine and was initially charged with misdemeanor assault.⁸ On Thursday, April 4, 2019, a Crime Stoppers tip led detectives to the Arden Heights storage unit. Inside, they found charred human remains in a black bag within the blue plastic bin. Dental records identified the remains as Jeanine’s.¹ Her vehicle was recovered separately in Chester, Pennsylvania.⁶

The Charges

On April 26, 2019, Richmond County District Attorney Michael E. McMahon announced a 15-count indictment against both Michael Cammarata and Ayisha Egea. The joint counts included second-degree murder, first-degree manslaughter, concealment of a human corpse, two counts of tampering with physical evidence, and five counts of endangering the welfare of a child. Michael alone faced additional counts of criminal possession of stolen property, for taking Jeanine’s debit card and driver’s license, and stalking in the first, third, and fourth degrees.¹⁰

Michael Cammarata’s Trial and Sentence

Michael Cammarata’s trial opened on September 28, 2021, before Justice Mario F. Mattei in Richmond County Supreme Court. Assistant District Attorneys Adam Silberlight and Timothy Richard prosecuted the case.⁶ Defense attorney Mario F. Gallucci conceded Michael’s role in the cover-up, calling it “disgusting” and “despicable,” but argued that Egea alone committed the killing. The evidence included the apartment and storage-unit surveillance footage, the medical examiner’s findings, phone records, and toll records.⁴

The jury returned its verdict on October 18, 2021, finding Michael guilty on all counts, including second-degree murder, concealment of a human corpse, tampering with physical evidence, and endangering the welfare of a child.⁹ In November 2021, Justice Mattei sentenced him to 23 years to life for the murder, with consecutive terms of 16 months to four years each for evidence tampering and concealing a human corpse. At sentencing, Michael said, “I’m sorry for everything.”¹¹ He remains incarcerated.¹²

Ayisha Egea’s Plea and Release

After Michael’s conviction, Egea accepted a plea offer in December 2021, pleading guilty to first-degree manslaughter. She was sentenced to nine years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision. Her attorneys argued she did not participate in the actual killing and had acted under Michael’s control.¹²

In 2022, Egea sought a reduced sentence under New York’s Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, claiming she had been abused by Michael. Justice Mattei denied the request, finding no evidence that domestic abuse was a factor in her involvement in the murder.¹³

As of May 2026, Egea was scheduled for release to post-release supervision in June 2026. The New York Department of Corrections and Community Supervision calculates release dates based on the type of sentence, time served in local jail before sentencing, completion of rehabilitative programs, and disciplinary record. The news drew public anger. Jessica Pobega said: “It is a slap in the face to those who loved Jeanine… The New York state justice system is a joke. We say it all the time; Jeanine deserved better.”¹²

The Children

Michael and Egea had been living in Queens with five children: Jeanine and Michael’s two, and Egea’s three.² During the investigation, the Administration for Children’s Services placed Jeanine’s two younger children with a family; they were later reported to be staying with Michael Cammarata’s sister.⁷ Her older son from her first marriage was living with his father.
