Owners of Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids have several pending class action lawsuits over the battery fire defect, but as of mid-2026 no Jeep 4xe battery class action lawsuit has produced a settlement, and no permanent recall repair exists. Cases are moving through federal courts in Utah, New York, Michigan, and Delaware, and a separate class action has been authorized in Quebec. Stellantis has meanwhile discontinued the entire 4xe lineup in North America starting with the 2026 model year.
What the Lawsuits Are About
The 4xe vehicles use 17 kWh lithium-ion battery packs with 96 cells supplied by Samsung SDI. A joint investigation traced the fires to damaged separators inside the cells, which can cause an internal short circuit and thermal runaway.1Insurance Business Magazine. Stellantis has documented 19 battery fires and one injury, and estimates about five percent of the recalled vehicles carry the underlying cell defect.3CBS News. Chrysler Stellantis Recall 320,000 Jeep Wrangler Grand Cherokee Battery Fire The problem has grown across three recalls. The first, in November 2023, covered roughly 32,000 Wrangler 4xes.4Easy Lemon. Jeep Fire Recall Lemon Law Rights A second, in October 2024, expanded the scope to 154,032 vehicles and added the Grand Cherokee 4xe, with a software update to the battery pack control module as the proposed fix.5NHTSA. There is still no permanent fix. Interim letters mailed to owners starting around December 2, 2025 tell them to park outside and away from structures, stop charging the battery, and wait for a second notification.6NHTSA. Some dealers began running diagnostics late in 2025 that could flag compromised batteries for replacement, but owner reports described an uneven rollout, with some dealerships scheduling appointments and others telling customers the procedure was suspended.7JL Wrangler Forums. A separate recall (25V-766) covers roughly 113,000 of the same 4xe models for sand contamination left in the engine during casting, and carries a “do not drive” advisory. That is a different defect but often affects the same vehicles.8WTOL. Toledo Jeep 4xe Engine Sand Recall
The Pending U.S. Class Actions
The lawsuits split into two groups: cases about the battery fire defect and an older case about the vehicles’ electric-driving mode.
Fire-Defect Cases
The most recent fire case is Humphreys v. FCA US LLC (Case No. 2:26-cv-00053), filed January 21, 2026 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah. It covers 2020–2025 Wrangler 4xe and 2022–2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe models and alleges FCA knew about the fire risk as early as March 2021 but concealed it and made misleading statements about safety. The complaint asserts violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, breach of express and implied warranties, unjust enrichment, and violations of the Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act. An earlier fire case is already deeper into litigation. Lieff Cabraser represents 4xe owners in the Eastern District of Michigan (Case No. 2:24-cv-10546). A first amended complaint filed August 23, 2024 defined the class as owners and lessees of 2021–2023 Wrangler 4xes and alleged fraudulent concealment along with warranty and consumer-protection claims across ten states.10Lieff Cabraser. The Humphreys complaint also frames Stellantis’s product decision in litigation terms, alleging the company was “unable or unwilling to remedy the fire risk defect” and killed the product line rather than engineer a permanent fix.11Detroit Free Press. None of the U.S. cases have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation proceeding.
The Electric-Mode Case
A separate lawsuit predates the fire recalls. Crowell et al. v. FCA US LLC (Case No. 23-cv-00013) in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware alleges a design defect involving the vehicles’ “Fuel and Oil Refresh Mode” (FORM). Plaintiffs claim FORM engages far more often and for longer than necessary, especially in cold weather, locking owners out of electric-only driving for months at a time. They seek a permanent fix and reimbursement for consumers who paid a premium for hybrid capability they could not use. The Quebec Class Action
In Canada, Lex Group Inc. filed a class action in the Superior Court of Quebec on behalf of Quebec owners and lessees of 2021–2025 Wrangler and 2022–2025 Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids. The case, Azoulay et al. v. FCA Canada Inc. et al. (Case No. 500-06-001342-241), was authorized by the court through judgments dated September 5 and November 17, 2025. Authorization is a procedural step allowing the case to move forward; it does not decide liability, and FCA Canada and FCA US deny all claims. Settlement Status

If You Own a 4xe
You are likely already within a putative class if your vehicle is a 2020–2025 Wrangler 4xe or a 2022–2026 Grand Cherokee 4xe, since the pending U.S. fire-defect complaints cover those model years. You do not need to sign up to be part of a proposed class action in the United States; if a class is certified and a settlement is later approved, you would receive notice and an opportunity to file a claim or opt out at that stage. Class actions are not the only route. State lemon laws and the federal Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act may provide individual relief when a vehicle cannot be repaired after multiple attempts. Possible remedies include a full buyback (purchase price minus a mileage offset), a replacement vehicle, or a cash settlement that lets you keep the car, plus reimbursement for out-of-pocket costs like rental cars, towing, and registration.
