Jekai Reid-John: Murder Charge, Trial, and Acquittal

Jekai Reid-John is a Norristown, Pennsylvania man who was charged with first-degree murder in the October 2021 shooting of New Jersey pharmaceutical executive Sree Aravapalli and acquitted of murder and nearly all related charges by a Middlesex County, New Jersey jury on September 26, 2025.¹ The jury deadlocked on a single conspiracy-to-commit-robbery count, which was still unresolved as of late 2025.²

What He Was Accused Of

Prosecutors alleged that Reid-John, then 27, and a second man watched Sree Aravapalli, the 54-year-old CEO of East Windsor-based Aurex Laboratories, win roughly $10,000 at Parx Casino in Bensalem, Pennsylvania on the night of October 25, 2021, and followed him home to Plainsboro, New Jersey.³ One of them broke in through a back sliding door. Plainsboro police were called at 3:38 a.m. and found Aravapalli shot in his home office. He was pronounced dead at a hospital at 5:24 a.m. His wife and daughter had been asleep elsewhere in the house.⁴

Reid-John was charged with first-degree murder, armed robbery, burglary, multiple weapons offenses, and witness tampering.¹

The Evidence Against Him

The state’s case was circumstantial. Investigators identified Reid-John through a debit card receipt bearing his name used at the casino, surveillance footage showing a suspect with hand tattoos in a light brown hooded sweatshirt and a blue surgical mask, and EZ Pass records showing a white BMW exiting the Pennsylvania Turnpike behind Aravapalli’s car at 3:20 a.m.⁴

Police traced the BMW to Reid-John’s Norristown address and took him into custody the next day. A search of his vehicle and home recovered clothing matching what the casino suspect was wearing, a temporary registration tag in a trash bag, and a loaded 9 mm handgun. Reid-John told detectives he had gone to the casino to buy food and asked for a lawyer when questioned about the rest of the night.⁴

Why the Jury Acquitted

The three-week trial was held in Middlesex County Superior Court before Judge Thomas Buck. On September 26, 2025, the jury returned not-guilty verdicts on murder, armed robbery, burglary, the weapons counts, and witness tampering.²

One evidentiary gap stood out. The handgun seized from Reid-John’s home was a 9 mm, but the shell casings recovered at the scene were .380 caliber. The murder weapon was never recovered or linked to Reid-John. Defense attorney Durann Neil Jr. said after the verdict that “the jury carefully considered the evidence and reached the only verdict consistent with the facts and the law.”⁵

The Unresolved Conspiracy Count

The jury could not reach a unanimous verdict on one charge: conspiracy to commit robbery. The parties were scheduled to return before Judge Buck on October 10, 2025 to address it, and a spokesperson for the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office said the state was “still determining how they would like to proceed.”¹ No further public disposition of that count has been reported.

The Co-Defendant

A second suspect, Devon Melchor, 26, of Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, was arrested days after the killing by U.S. Marshals in Florida as he allegedly tried to board an international flight.⁶ NBC New York’s reporting described Reid-John as the alleged “trigger man” and Melchor as his accomplice.³ Melchor pleaded guilty to armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery. His sentencing before Judge Buck was scheduled for November 13, 2025.²

Prior Record

Court records show Reid-John pleaded guilty to a drug-dealing offense in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania in 2016 and was sentenced to a minimum of two to four years in state prison with eight years of probation.⁷
