Jenean Chapman: Murder, Austin Arrest, and 72-Year Sentence

Jenean Chapman, a 46-year-old marketing executive and former personal assistant to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, was murdered by her husband James Michael Patrick in their downtown Dallas apartment in September 2023. A Dallas County jury convicted Patrick of murder and sentenced him to 72 years in prison in January 2025.¹

How Chapman Was Found

On September 25, 2023, Dallas police went to The National, an apartment building in the 1400 block of Elm Street, for a welfare check. Chapman’s employer had asked officers to look in on her after she failed to show up for work, and neighbors had reported an odor coming from the unit.²³

Officers found Chapman on her bed with severe injuries to her neck, face, and body. A nightstand and lamp had been knocked over, and blood was spread throughout the apartment.⁴ Her family later said her body was “unrecognizable.”¹

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a homicide the next day. Autopsy findings included hemorrhaging to the muscles of the neck and eyes, blunt force head trauma, lacerations inside the mouth, and blood around the brain.⁵

A Short, Violent Marriage

Chapman and Patrick had known each other roughly six years and had an on-and-off relationship before marrying in July 2023. She was killed about two months into the marriage. Her sisters described the relationship as toxic and rocky, marked by domestic abuse, and the couple had separated before the killing.²¹

According to the arrest affidavit, Chapman took time off work on September 20 for “domestic issues.” A sister told investigators Chapman had confided that Patrick had recently choked her unconscious during a fight. Building surveillance showed Patrick loading furniture on September 20, and he was last seen at the apartment on September 22. Chapman’s sister said September 20 or 21 was the last time any family member heard from her.⁵

Patrick’s Arrest in Austin

On the same day Chapman’s body was found, Patrick was arrested in Austin by University of Texas Police. He had checked himself into Dell Seton Medical Center for treatment of an adverse reaction to an unknown substance. A doctor there noticed a bloody, black fingernail; asked what happened, Patrick said he “got in a fight with my wife.”⁴ He was charged with murder, transferred to Dallas County, and held on a $1 million bond.⁵

The Trial and 72-Year Sentence

Patrick’s murder trial opened in Dallas County during the week of January 13, 2025. Prosecutors put on the physical evidence from the apartment, the medical examiner’s findings, and Patrick’s own hospital admission about fighting with his wife, resting on January 17. The defense rested on January 22.¹

His lawyers asked jurors to find the killing was an act of “sudden passion,” a finding that under Texas law would have reduced the sentencing range to two to 20 years. Jurors deliberated for several days and rejected it. On January 24, 2025, they convicted Patrick of murder and sentenced him to 72 years in prison. According to reporting on the sentencing, he showed no emotion as the sentence was read.¹⁶

At the sentencing phase, Chapman’s sister Charene Chapman told Patrick, “May you endure a life of perpetual fear and decay, confined to an existence devoid of solace or redemption. I want you to suffer. Every day for the rest of your life.” Her sister Crystal Marshall used the case to urge the public to act on warning signs: “To people out there, if they see any sign or indication that a loved one is being impacted by a toxic or abusive relationship, do not take the signs lightly.”¹

Who Jenean Chapman Was

Born on July 18, 1977, Chapman was a Syracuse University graduate. Her first job out of college was as personal assistant to Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, from 2001 to 2005; she compiled briefings, managed travel logistics, and organized publicity tours and book signings.⁷

She later worked at Def Jam Recordings, where she was associated with the Simmons family, and lived in New York and San Francisco before moving to Dallas about five months before her death.⁸⁹ In Dallas she was senior vice president at the digital marketing agency Critical Mass and was preparing to launch her own business. Her sister Nichole Marshall called her “a force to be reckoned with” and “an amazing person.”²

Sarah Ferguson’s Tribute

On September 30, 2023, Ferguson posted a tribute on Instagram. “I am shocked and saddened to learn that Jenean Chapman, who worked with me as my personal assistant many years ago, has been murdered in Dallas aged just 46,” she wrote, calling Chapman “loyal, hardworking, beautiful and fun” and saying she had heard from her just a couple of months earlier and that Chapman “seemed so happy.” Ferguson said she had donated to the family’s GoFundMe and pledged further support.¹⁰

Chapman’s funeral was held on October 6, 2023, at Donohue Cecere Funeral Home in Westbury, New York, and she was interred at Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury.¹¹
