Jennifer Odom Murder Case: Suspect, Charges, and Trial Status

The Jennifer Odom murder case, unsolved for three decades after the 12-year-old was abducted from her school bus stop in rural Pasco County, Florida, on February 19, 1993, was charged in July 2023 against Jeffrey Norman Crum, a convicted sex offender already serving two life sentences for a nearly identical 1992 attack. Crum faces first-degree murder, kidnapping, and sexual battery charges, prosecutors are seeking the death penalty, and his trial is scheduled to begin on August 17, 2026.¹

What Happened to Jennifer Odom

Jennifer got off her school bus around 3:00 p.m. on February 19, 1993, waved to friends, and started the roughly 200-yard walk to her home. Children still on the bus reported seeing a faded blue, full-size, older-model pickup truck slowly following her.² She never made it home.

Six days later, on February 25, 1993, a couple found her body in an abandoned orange grove in southeast Hernando County. Authorities said there was evidence she had been “brutally attacked.”³ Her clothing, including a red sweater and a “Hooters” jacket, has never been recovered.²

How the Case Was Solved After 30 Years

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office worked the case for three decades, with Sheriff Al Nienhuis later saying that “dozens and dozens, maybe even hundreds of items were tested and retested” as DNA technology improved.⁴ The Florida Sheriffs Association’s Cold Case Advisory Commission, chaired by Citrus County Sheriff Mike Prendergast, later provided personnel and specialty resources to help revisit the evidence.⁵

The break came through familial DNA. In February 2015, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement compared an unknown DNA profile from a 1992 attempted-murder case against profiles from local unsolved crimes. That comparison identified Jeffrey Crum’s son as a close familial match to the unknown profile, pointing investigators to the father.⁶ DNA later collected from Crum’s sexual battery case gave investigators the evidence they needed to pursue charges in Jennifer’s killing, according to Sheriff Nienhuis.⁷

Who Jeffrey Crum Is

Jeffrey Norman Crum was born August 18, 1961. According to Sheriff Nienhuis, his prior arrests include armed robbery in 1981, sexual assault and kidnapping in 1985, carrying a concealed weapon in 1987 and 1988, multiple domestic battery charges in 1998, a probation violation in 2001, and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in 2005.⁶

The two life sentences Crum is already serving come from the 1992 attack on Carolyn Murray, a 17-year-old girl in Pasco County. Murray was intercepted after getting off a school bus, led behind a vacant house, and struck in the head with a blunt object. The blow crushed part of her skull and left her with permanent brain damage, partial paralysis, and an inability to speak in full sentences.⁸ Crum was arrested for that crime in 2015 and later convicted of sexual battery and attempted murder.³

Investigators saw the Murray and Odom attacks as strikingly similar. Both involved young girls abducted near school bus stops in the middle of the day in rural areas. Both victims were sexually assaulted. Both suffered severe blunt-force trauma to the right side of the skull. The attacks occurred about 13 months apart.⁴

Court documents describe incriminating statements Crum allegedly made about the Odom case. He is said to have told his son, Jeffrey Crum Jr., “I ‘did’ Jennifer Odom,” and to have added, “Remember that little black girl when you were a kid, I did that.” Separately, Crum allegedly told a woman he had previously kidnapped and raped that he had taken Jennifer and held her at his home for one to two days, and that on the second day something angered him and he struck her in the head and killed her.⁹

The Charges and Death Penalty

On July 24, 2023, a Florida grand jury in the Fifth Judicial Circuit indicted Crum on one count of first-degree murder, one count of kidnapping, and one count of sexual battery. He was ordered held without bond in the Hernando County Jail. He was 61 at the time of his arrest and was already serving his two life sentences from the Murray case.¹

Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney William “Bill” Gladson announced that prosecutors are seeking the death penalty. “I have confidence that we have the right person, and that we have the right aggravators in this particular case to treat it as a death penalty case,” Gladson said at a July 27, 2023, news conference.³ Gladson did not specify which statutory aggravating factors are being alleged.

Investigators believe Crum may have additional undiscovered victims. Sheriff Nienhuis asked anyone with information about other potential crimes to contact Detective George Loydgren at the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.⁵

Where the Case Stands Now

The case is proceeding in Hernando County Circuit Court before Judge Daniel B. Merritt. At a June 8, 2026 hearing, the defense presented 14 pretrial motions. Judge Merritt denied 11 of them, including a motion to preclude the death penalty and a motion to allow the defense to present evidence about the impact of a potential sentence on Crum’s family.¹⁰

The most consequential ruling concerned whether jurors will hear about the Carolyn Murray attack. Prosecutors argued under Florida’s “Williams Rule” (Florida Statute 90.404(2)(a)) that the similarities between the two attacks were sufficient to prove motive, intent, and identity. They pointed to the victims’ demographics, both abductions occurring near bus stops in the middle of the day in rural areas, the sexual battery and blunt-force trauma to the right side of the skull in both cases, and the fact that in both cases the victims’ personal belongings were found at significant distances from their bodies. Judge Merritt agreed, ruling that “clear and convincing evidence” had been established and that the circumstances of the two attacks did not need to be “identical” to be linked.¹⁰

Trial is scheduled for August 17, 2026. An additional pretrial hearing is set for July 15, 2026, and Judge Merritt has left August 3, 2026 open for a further hearing if necessary.¹⁰
