Joe Shymanski Murder Case: Trial, Sentence, and Snyder Question

The Joe Shymanski murder case ended in April 2025 with the conviction of Brandon Ross Holbrook, the boyfriend of Shymanski’s ex-wife, for first-degree premeditated murder. Holbrook drove roughly 200 miles from Pennsylvania to Shymanski’s Huntingtown, Maryland, home on September 3, 2023, shot him in the driveway, and took the body back to Pennsylvania, where he dismembered and burned the remains. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole. Publicly, one question has outlasted the verdict: whether he acted alone.

What Happened on September 3, 2023

Prosecutors said Holbrook, then 49 and living in Reedsville, Pennsylvania, shot Shymanski in his driveway, loaded the body into his truck, and drove it home. At his Reedsville property, he used a power saw to dismember the remains, burned the body parts in a metal barrel, and scattered them in a nearby clearing. He then cleaned the truck with bleach and spread chicken organs and fluid across the bed to mask any human blood.¹

Shymanski’s ex-wife, Heather Snyder, reported him missing the next evening, September 4, at 7:47 p.m., saying she had arrived at his home for a scheduled custody exchange and found the house empty.²

How Investigators Identified Holbrook

Calvert County investigators moved on Holbrook quickly. Camera footage captured his truck and license plate near Shymanski’s residence around the time of the disappearance.³ On September 5, police searched his Pennsylvania property and recovered firearms, plastic tarps, rubber gloves, cleaning fluid, and an open package of power saw blades. A red substance in the truck turned out to be animal blood, consistent with the chicken material he had used to cover his tracks.

Holbrook was arrested on September 6. The following day, authorities located charred human remains in a field near his property, and dental records identified them as Shymanski’s.⁴ Surveillance video also showed Holbrook buying cleaning supplies the morning after Shymanski disappeared and later dumping items later identified as human remains near a store parking lot.³

State’s Attorney Robert Harvey later noted that prosecutors built their case without eyewitnesses, a recovered murder weapon, or a confession.¹

Who Brandon Holbrook Was

Holbrook had never met Shymanski. He met Snyder online after she moved back to Pennsylvania in 2021, and the two were together for roughly two years. He built a rapport with Shymanski’s children, who reportedly called him “Uncle Brandon.”⁵

His prior record was in sexual offenses, not violence. According to Sgt. John Chester of the Mifflin County Police Department, Holbrook had pleaded guilty to at least five counts of indecent exposure over the years,² including a 2014 incident at a Walmart and a later offense at a library in Lancaster County while he was on probation.⁶ Earlier sentences had been probation and counseling.

Shymanski’s own marriage to Snyder had ended bitterly. She left the marital home with their two children in July 2021 and moved back to Pennsylvania; a judgment of absolute divorce was entered on October 13, 2022, with joint legal custody but primary physical custody to Shymanski during the school year.⁷ By the summer of 2023, Shymanski had purchased a million-dollar life insurance policy naming the two children as beneficiaries.³

The Trial and Sentence

A Calvert County grand jury indicted Holbrook on November 20, 2023, on five charges: common law murder, first-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.⁸ Trial began March 31, 2025, in the Circuit Court for Calvert County, with Benjamin Lerner and Christopher Monte trying the case for the State and Brendan Callahan and Thomas Mooney representing Holbrook.¹

The State’s case rested on surveillance video, blood spatter at Shymanski’s home, and the remains identified through dental records. The defense conceded Holbrook may have been involved in disposing of the body but argued no forensic evidence placed him at the house during the shooting, and that investigators had not adequately scrutinized Heather Snyder.³

On April 8, 2025, after roughly 80 minutes of deliberation, the jury found Holbrook guilty of first-degree premeditated murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony violent crime, and altering physical evidence. It returned no verdict on the assault charges.⁸

On July 18, 2025, Judge Mark S. Chandlee sentenced Holbrook to life in prison without the possibility of parole on the murder count, plus 20 years for the firearm charge and three years for evidence destruction, all running concurrently.⁸ It was the maximum sentence allowed under Maryland law.¹ Holbrook is appealing the conviction.

The Unanswered Question About Heather Snyder

Heather Snyder has never been charged with a crime or identified by authorities as a suspect in connection with the murder.³ Prosecutors introduced surveillance footage and photos placing her at a store in Newport, Pennsylvania, roughly three hours from the crime scene, around the time of the killing.²

Other trial evidence complicated that picture. In a January 2023 text exchange, Snyder complained to Holbrook about Shymanski, and Holbrook wrote back, “I have other solutions in mind, but probably not the best way to go.” Snyder did not directly respond to the remark and later texted, “I’m looking for a therapist.”² In another message, she wrote, “I keep thinking karma is going to catch up with him. But I’m tired of being patient.” Snyder said she had ended the relationship with Holbrook about a month before the murder over his indecent exposure history, but six days before the killing Holbrook texted, “I like the smell of your hair on my pillow,” and Snyder replied, “Wish I was in your bed.”

The defense named Snyder more than 400 times at trial. Callahan argued investigators had not searched her home or property and had not investigated a gun she said Holbrook had given her until weeks before trial. No ammunition was ever recovered to link that weapon to the crime.³ Callahan pointed to motive: with Shymanski dead, Snyder stood to gain custody of the two children and, because they were minors, effective control over the million-dollar life insurance payout. Snyder had initially petitioned to be appointed guardian of the insurance proceeds but withdrew the petition, and the court named a third-party guardian.⁵

Called to the witness stand on the fifth day of trial, Snyder invoked her Fifth Amendment privilege and declined to answer questions.² In a May 2025 CBS 48 Hours interview, she denied any involvement, denied telling Holbrook she wanted Shymanski dead, called the “other solutions” text a joke, and said, “I think obviously psychologically he snapped over something.”³ Asked by 48 Hours whether there is a current investigation into Snyder, Pennsylvania Detective Jessica Aurand said, “I can’t answer that question,” and, when pressed on whether she knew the answer, said, “Yes. But I’m not allowed to say.” Prosecutor Robert Harvey declined to speculate about future investigative steps, noting that because Holbrook’s conviction is under appeal, the case remains legally open.

Members of Shymanski’s family, including his niece Janine, have publicly said they believe Snyder helped plan the murder. “She just needed it done and she found her person that would do that for her,” Janine Shymanski told 48 Hours.³ The family also says it has been estranged from Shymanski’s two children since his death.⁹

Who Joe Shymanski Was

Shymanski was born November 11, 1971, in Detroit and grew up in Livonia, Michigan, earning a degree in history and psychology and a teaching certification from the University of Michigan.¹⁰ He taught social studies in Detroit, Korea, Honduras, Washington, D.C., and Virginia before opening a Capitol Hill photography studio in 2000. His work appeared in Harper’s, Hamptons Magazine, and The Washington Post, and his subjects ranged from the 14th Dalai Lama to President George W. Bush. At Eastern Market on Capitol Hill, he became known for his fine art prints and LEGO Star Wars pieces, running his booth with friend and business partner Alton McDougle.¹¹

After his death, his family created the Joe Shymanski Memorial Scholarship Fund, awarded annually in May through the American Experience Foundation to a D.C. public school student studying photography and media arts.¹² The family also maintains an advocacy website, justiceforjoeshymanski.com, focused on the motive behind the killing and asking anyone with information to come forward.
