Joel Bremer: Federal Conviction and Ronna Bremer’s Disappearance

Joel Bremer is a Missouri man serving an 18-year federal prison sentence for possessing child pornography, and the husband of Ronna Bremer, a 22-year-old pregnant mother who vanished from their Ozark, Missouri home in December 1988 in a case that remains unsolved.¹²

The Federal Child Pornography Sentence

Joel R. Bremer, then 51 and living in Unionville, Missouri, pleaded guilty on June 10, 2016 to possessing child pornography in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri. U.S. District Judge Roseann Ketchmark sentenced him on April 11, 2017 to 18 years in federal prison without parole, followed by lifetime supervised release.¹

He appealed, arguing his attorney had misled him into the plea and that the sentence was unreasonable. The Eighth Circuit rejected those arguments in December 2017, finding the appeal waiver in his plea agreement valid and enforceable, and affirmed the judgment.³

Earlier Sex Offense Charges Involving a Child

Before the federal case, Bremer was charged in February 2013 in Putnam County with four counts of first-degree statutory rape, one count of second-degree statutory rape, two counts of first-degree statutory sodomy, and two counts of felony child molestation. The alleged incidents occurred between 1999 and 2007. He was held on a $100,000 cash-only bond.⁴

Missouri’s sex offender registry lists Joel Lake Bremer as a Tier 3 offender, the state’s most serious classification, with a confinement release date of October 5, 2004, and a status of “compliant.”⁵ People who knew the family later told investigators that Bremer had been convicted of molesting the couple’s daughter, Samantha.²

Ronna Bremer’s 1988 Disappearance

On the night of December 20, 1988, Ronna Bremer vanished from the couple’s home in Ozark, Missouri. She was 22, the mother of two young children, and pregnant with her third.²

Joel told investigators that he and Ronna had been fighting that evening, that he left the home on foot, and that he later fell asleep in the living room with their two children. He said he did not realize she was missing until the following morning. Two years later, Ronna’s skull was found in a crevice in the woods near property belonging to David Gray, her brother-in-law. No other remains have ever been recovered.²

Conflicting Family Accounts

Ronna’s sister-in-law, Barbara Gray, said Ronna called her around 10:30 p.m. that night asking whether Joel was at her house, and that she sent her husband, David Gray, and another brother-in-law, John Simpson, to look for him. Simpson later told investigators he recalled going to Ronna and Joel’s duplex to search, but said David Gray dropped him off at home before they ever located Joel. David Gray insisted he never went to the duplex and never searched for Joel that night at all.²

Samantha Freye, the couple’s daughter, was three at the time. She later told investigators she remembered a vehicle pulling up to the house and hearing her mother say, “There he is,” in reference to her father, before Ronna went outside.²

The 2001 Tip Naming David Gray

In 2001, an unidentified witness told detectives that David Gray had allegedly confessed to killing a woman by choking her to death in his car, quoting Gray as laughing and saying he “had to choke the b—h twice.” The same witness said his girlfriend had found the skull and mailed it anonymously to detectives in a neighboring county because she was afraid to come forward. When confronted, David Gray denied killing Ronna, denied ever confessing, denied knowing her skull had been found near his property, and dismissed the allegations as “a lot of hearsay.”²

The Cold Justice Reinvestigation

The true-crime series Cold Justice revisited the case in a Season 8 episode. Prosecutor Kelly Siegler and homicide detective Terri Hook worked with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office, focusing on Joel Bremer and David Gray as the two primary suspects. The team re-interviewed the 2001 witness, who reaffirmed the account of Gray’s alleged confession, and spoke with Samantha Freye off-camera, who repeated her childhood memory of the vehicle and her mother going outside.²

The team concluded it likely took two people to dispose of Ronna’s body on the hillside, and said by the end of the investigation that they had a “strong case” against both Joel Bremer and David Gray. Detectives met with a local prosecutor, who indicated she planned to look into filing charges against both men.²

Where Things Stand

As of May 2026, Ronna Bremer’s death remains unresolved. No murder charges have been filed against Joel Bremer or David Gray.⁶ Joel Bremer remains in federal prison serving the 18-year sentence, with lifetime supervised release to follow.¹
