Jonathan Broyhill Case: Embezzlement, Murder, Appeal, and FEC

The Jonathan Broyhill case is a 2013 North Carolina murder in which Broyhill, a longtime best friend and employee of Democratic political strategist Jamie Kirk Hahn, fatally stabbed her at her Raleigh home to keep her from exposing that he had embezzled roughly $58,000 from a congressional campaign account she oversaw. He was convicted of first-degree murder in March 2015 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.¹

Who Jonathan Broyhill Was

Broyhill grew up in Lenoir, North Carolina, and attended the same high school as Nation Hahn, Jamie’s husband. The two men became close friends, and Broyhill was the best man at the Hahns’ 2009 wedding.¹

In April 2010, Jamie Hahn hired him at Sky Blue Strategies, the political consulting firm she had founded. His job put him inside the money: he handled Federal Election Commission compliance, managed donations, and disbursed funds for the campaign of U.S. Representative Brad Miller. He was a signatory on the campaign’s bank account.

The Embezzlement That Set Everything in Motion

Between roughly June 2011 and March 2013, Broyhill stole from the Miller campaign account. FEC records show he wrote 39 checks to himself totaling more than $46,500 and made 86 additional unauthorized disbursements totaling about $11,000, for a total of roughly $58,000.² He masked the withdrawals in the bookkeeping software as legitimate creditor payments, contributions to other candidates, or contributor refunds.

The gap between the books and the bank grew enormous. By early 2013 the campaign’s quarterly report to the FEC claimed a cash balance of $62,914.52; the actual balance was negative $3,587.06.¹ To keep anyone from noticing, Broyhill intercepted FEC correspondence, including an October 2012 request for additional information.²

Fake Illnesses to Stall Jamie Hahn

As campaign staffers began asking Jamie Hahn about late refund checks, Broyhill invented health crises to avoid producing the books. In August 2012 he told the Hahns he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and needed gallbladder surgery. He told a stepmother he had rheumatoid arthritis and a stepsister that he had multiple sclerosis.³

On April 9, 2013, he escalated. He told the Hahns that doctors had found a spot on his pancreas during surgery and suspected pancreatic cancer. Six days later, the Hahns drove him to Duke Cancer Hospital for what they thought was an appointment. Broyhill walked around the building for two hours while they waited in the lobby, then came back and confirmed the diagnosis. Investigators later found searches on his iPad for pancreatic cancer information and oncologists.⁴ None of the illnesses were real.

He also used Nation Hahn’s credit card number, stored in the Notes app on his iPhone, to book travel that included a one-way flight to Las Vegas scheduled for April 23, 2013.

The Attack on April 22, 2013

By mid-April the story was collapsing. On April 14, the FEC website showed that the campaign’s 2012 year-end report had never been filed. A campaign check bounced. Jamie Hahn told Broyhill she wanted the accounts and online banking access.⁵

That same day, Broyhill bought an eight-inch Oneida chef’s knife from a Harris Teeter. Eight days later, on April 22, he arrived at the Hahns’ North Raleigh home with the knife in his backpack, saying he was there to go over the campaign finances. Less than two hours before the attack, he canceled the Las Vegas flight.⁴

After Nation Hahn went upstairs, he heard Jamie screaming, “He’s trying to kill me.” He ran down and found Broyhill standing over her with the knife. Jamie had been stabbed 24 times in the back, chest, abdomen, and face.⁶ Nation fought Broyhill, taking serious wounds to his hands, arms, and fingers, and got Jamie out of the house. She died two days later, on April 24, 2013.

Broyhill had wounds of his own, including cuts to his wrists and a stab wound to his stomach. Investigators could not determine whether they were self-inflicted before or after the attack.⁷

The Trial and Conviction

Broyhill was tried in Wake County Superior Court in early 2015 before Judge Paul C. Ridgeway on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.

Lead prosecutor Doug Faucette argued the killing was premeditated: Broyhill bought the knife in advance, kept it hidden, canceled his escape flight only after committing to the meeting, and had motive in the embezzlement Jamie Hahn was about to uncover. Nation Hahn testified about the attack. Detective Zeke Morse walked jurors through physical and digital evidence, including the knife packaging in Broyhill’s backpack and browser searches for cruises that did not require a passport.⁴ Campaign treasurer John Wallace testified about the financial discrepancies. A recorded April 26, 2013 custodial interview was played for the jury, in which Broyhill admitted to embezzling more than $46,500, lying about every one of his claimed medical conditions, and stabbing Jamie Hahn.¹

The defense did not contest that Broyhill stabbed Hahn. It argued the killing was not premeditated, saying his mental state had been “unraveling,” that he went to the house intending to kill himself, and that “something snapped.”⁸ Broyhill’s therapist, nurse psychotherapist Susan Simon, testified about his feelings of worthlessness and depression. His stepmother, Daryl Broyhill, said he appeared to be “in his own world” when she visited him in jail.⁹ Judge Ridgeway excluded testimony from psychiatrist Dr. Badri Hamra as undisclosed expert opinion.

On March 18, 2015, the jury deliberated for less than 90 minutes and convicted Broyhill on all counts.¹⁰ Judge Ridgeway sentenced him to life without parole for the murder, plus consecutive terms of 157 to 201 months for attempted first-degree murder and 73 to 100 months for the assault.¹

The 2017 Appeal

Broyhill appealed on three grounds: the exclusion of Dr. Hamra’s psychiatric testimony, restrictions on his lawyers’ questioning during jury selection, and the trial court’s refusal to admit two earlier custodial interviews alongside the one played for the jury. On July 18, 2017, the North Carolina Court of Appeals rejected all three arguments and upheld the conviction. The court found Dr. Hamra’s testimony was properly excluded as undisclosed expert opinion, that the trial judge acted within his discretion in limiting jury selection questions aimed at extracting advance commitments from jurors, and that Broyhill had not shown his earlier statements were necessary to give context to the admitted one.¹

The FEC Case

The Federal Election Commission investigated the campaign finance violations separately in MUR 6738. On May 19, 2015, the FEC found reason to believe Broyhill had knowingly and willfully violated federal law prohibiting personal use of campaign funds. Broyhill was never criminally charged for the embezzlement itself; evidence of the theft was used at his murder trial to establish motive.²

What Happened After

Nation Hahn survived after surgery and physical therapy for the wounds to his arms and hands.¹¹ In April 2017 he was the keynote speaker at a crime victims’ rights event in Raleigh.¹²

Jamie Hahn’s family and community founded the Jamie Kirk Hahn Foundation to fund emerging leaders and Triangle-area nonprofits working on food insecurity, poverty, and mentorship. It later became a donor-advised fund at the North Carolina Community Foundation and concluded its grantmaking in 2024.¹³
