Jonathan Majors was convicted in December 2023 of misdemeanor reckless assault and harassment of his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari, sentenced in April 2024 to no jail time but a 52-week domestic violence intervention program, and fired by Marvel Studios within hours of the verdict. The trial, verdict, and fallout for Jonathan Majors also included a settled civil lawsuit, additional abuse allegations from other women, a leaked audio recording, and an ongoing effort to return to acting through independent projects.
What the Jury Decided
On December 18, 2023, a Manhattan jury returned a split verdict after roughly three days of deliberations. Majors was found guilty of reckless assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, both misdemeanors. He was acquitted of two other charges, including intentional assault and aggravated harassment.1CBS News. Jonathan Majors Domestic Violence Trial Verdict2Time. Jonathan Majors Trial Takeaways
The trial, held in Manhattan Criminal Court before Judge Michael Gaffey, turned on Jabbari’s testimony, her medical records, surveillance footage, and audio recordings. Majors did not testify. His attorney, Priya Chaudhry, argued that Jabbari was the aggressor and had fabricated the abuse allegations after learning Majors was involved with another woman.3The Cut. The March 2023 Incident
The conviction stemmed from an altercation on March 25, 2023, inside a chauffeured SUV traveling from Brooklyn to Majors’ Chelsea apartment. Prosecutors alleged Jabbari saw a text on Majors’ phone reading “Wish I was kissing you right now” and tried to grab the device. In the struggle that followed, prosecutors said Majors pulled her finger, twisted her arm behind her back, and struck her in the face.3The Cut. Majors himself called 911 from his apartment, telling the operator he had come home to find Jabbari unconscious on his closet floor after what he described as an apparent overdose. Asked what had happened, he replied, “I don’t know.”4NBC News. The Marvel Firing and Other Career Losses
Within hours of the guilty verdict on December 18, 2023, Marvel Studios and Disney severed ties with Majors. Rather than recast Kang, Marvel shelved the character and rebranded the film as Avengers: Doomsday, casting Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom. The pivot was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Majors told TMZ he was “heartbroken” but acknowledged, “Doctor Doom is wicked, though,” and noted what he called a double standard compared with Downey’s own past legal issues.13Variety. Majors’ Denials and the Leaked Audio
Majors has continued to deny hitting Jabbari. On January 8, 2024, he sat with ABC News anchor Linsey Davis on Good Morning America and stated, “I have never struck a woman, ever,” calling the relationship “toxic, dangerous and unhealthy” but insisting, “I was reckless with her heart, not with her body.” He said he planned to appeal, though no formal appeal has been publicly confirmed.21Good Morning America. In March 2025, Rolling Stone published a 28-second audio recording from September 2022, made while the couple was living in London during filming of the second season of Loki. In it, Majors says, “I’m ashamed I’ve ever — I’ve never [been] aggressive with a woman before. I’ve never aggressed a woman — I aggressed you.” When Jabbari says, “You strangled me and pushed me against the car,” Majors replies, “Yes, all those things are under ‘aggressed,’ yeah.”22Rolling Stone. Other Allegations
In February 2024, The New York Times reported that two women who had dated Majors during his time at the Yale School of Drama accused him of abuse. Emma Duncan, described as his ex-fiancée, alleged he choked her, threw her across a room, and in a July 2016 incident threw her into a mailbox.24Rolling Stone. The Civil Suit
Separate from the criminal case, Jabbari filed a federal civil lawsuit against Majors in March 2024 in the Southern District of New York, alleging battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, malicious prosecution, and defamation. The malicious prosecution claim arose from a criminal complaint Majors had filed against Jabbari, which the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office declined to prosecute, citing a “lack of prosecutorial merit.”28Courthouse News Service.
