Joseph Lawson: Crystal Rogers Case, Verdict, and Appeal

Joseph Lawson is a Kentucky man convicted in July 2025 of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence for his role in the 2015 disappearance and presumed murder of Crystal Rogers, a Bardstown mother of five. A Warren County jury returned the verdict on July 8, 2025, and Judge Charles Simms III formally sentenced Lawson on September 17, 2025, to 25 years in prison. He is incarcerated at the Little Sandy Correctional Complex in Elliott County, Kentucky, and is appealing his conviction to the Kentucky Supreme Court.¹²

How Lawson Was Tied to the Crystal Rogers Case

Crystal Rogers, 35, was last seen on July 3, 2015, at the farm owned by the family of her boyfriend, Brooks Houck. Her maroon Chevrolet Impala was later found abandoned on the Bluegrass Parkway with a flat tire, keys still in the ignition, and her purse, cellphone, and Kentucky ID inside. Cell records showed her phone was turned off at 9:27 p.m. on July 3 and never turned back on. Her body has never been found, and she was declared legally presumed dead in October 2015.³⁴

Joseph Lawson had no known direct personal ties to either Rogers or Brooks Houck. The connection ran through his father, Steven Lawson, who had worked for Houck.⁵ The case sat without charges for years. The FBI took over in August 2020, and in August 2021 federal agents excavated a driveway in a neighborhood where court records suggest Steven and Joseph Lawson had picked up Rogers’ car the night she vanished.⁴

A Nelson County grand jury indicted Joseph Lawson on June 21, 2023, for complicity in tampering with physical evidence, and again on July 24, 2023, for conspiracy to commit murder. He was arraigned on September 7, 2023, and pleaded not guilty. Brooks Houck was arrested weeks later on a $10 million bond, and Steven Lawson was arrested in December 2023.⁶⁴ The indictment alleged the crimes took place in Nelson County on July 3 and July 4, 2015, and said Lawson “agreed to aid one or more persons in the planning or commission of the crime” when he or a co-conspirator “intentionally caused the death of another.” It did not name Crystal Rogers.⁷

Lawson’s bond was initially set at $500,000 cash and was reduced in February 2024 to $250,000, with the court classifying him as a “moderate flight risk.” A judge noted that Lawson is a paraplegic who uses a wheelchair following a 2021 motorcycle accident, and imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew and no-contact conditions.⁶

What Prosecutors Said Lawson Did

Prosecutors built the case with no body, no identified crime scene, and no murder weapon. Their theory rested on cell phone data, witness testimony, and circumstantial evidence describing a coordinated effort to kill Rogers and stage her disappearance as if she had left town voluntarily. They said Houck’s motive was to avoid child-support and custody disputes over the young son he shared with Rogers.⁸

According to the prosecution, Houck, Joseph Lawson, and Steven Lawson were in communication late on July 3 through the early hours of July 4, 2015. Joseph Lawson drove Rogers’ car from the Houck farm to the Bluegrass Parkway to abandon it, and Steven Lawson picked him up afterward and called Houck to confirm “the job of moving the car was done.”⁹¹⁰

Steven Lawson, tried separately in May 2025, took the stand in his own defense. He admitted that Joseph had arrived at a farm on Thompson Ridge with Rogers’ car the night of the disappearance, said he told his son to leave the property with the vehicle, and testified that he only became involved after Joseph called him when the car broke down near mile marker 14 on the Bluegrass Parkway. Steven Lawson also described a conversation in which Houck said he wanted Rogers “gone.” Lawson recalled asking, “Gone, gone?” and understanding that Houck “wanted her deceased.”¹¹ He acknowledged lying in earlier grand jury testimony because he “couldn’t man up” and was trying to protect his son.¹² A jury convicted him on May 30, 2025, of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence and recommended a 17-year sentence.

Two witnesses at the joint trial spoke directly to Joseph Lawson’s alleged role. Charlie Girdley testified that Steven Lawson had told him Houck wanted to “get rid of his old lady,” and that Joseph Lawson had discussed burying Rogers’ car with a skid-steer so it would never be found. Heather Snellen, a former girlfriend of Steven Lawson, testified that in 2017 she overheard Steve and Joseph Lawson in a basement discussing plans to move a body on the Houck farm.¹³ Digital forensic experts presented call detail records and Google location data tracking the defendants’ movements the night Rogers disappeared.

The Defense Case

Defense attorney Bobby Boyd called the prosecution’s case against Joseph Lawson “a witch hunt,” telling the jury that Lawson was an afterthought in the investigation and noting that his name “didn’t even come up until the third day of trial.”¹⁴ Co-counsel Kevin Coleman said the strategy was to “fade into the background,” arguing Houck was the real target and that Joseph was dragged in solely because of his father’s connection to Houck. Coleman pointed to a brief phone call Steven Lawson made to Houck just after midnight on July 4, saying investigators “ran with it and eventually Joey got brought into the mix.”¹⁵

The defense stressed the absence of physical evidence tying Lawson to the crime: no DNA, no fingerprints on Rogers’ vehicle, and phone records that had been purged by the time he became a suspect in 2020. Cell tower data, they argued, placed him on Boston Road, which runs parallel to the Bluegrass Parkway, rather than on the Parkway itself.¹⁴ The defense also attacked the credibility of Girdley and Snellen, arguing they had been “bullied, coerced and threatened” by Kentucky State Police, and noting that Snellen had been threatened with felony charges and a child protective services investigation.¹³

Verdict and Sentence

The joint trial of Joseph Lawson and Brooks Houck was held at the Warren County Justice Center in Bowling Green after being moved from Nelson County over media attention. It lasted nine days. The jury deliberated roughly four hours before convicting both defendants on all charges on July 8, 2025. Houck was found guilty of murder and tampering with physical evidence; Lawson was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and tampering with physical evidence.¹⁶

On September 17, 2025, Judge Charles Simms III sentenced Lawson to 20 years for conspiracy to commit murder and 5 years for tampering with physical evidence, to run consecutively, for a total of 25 years. Houck received life plus five years. Both men must serve 85 percent of their sentences before becoming eligible for parole.¹⁷ At the hearing, Sherry Ballard, Crystal’s mother, addressed Lawson directly: “Joey, what you did for a little money says a lot about the person that you are. I believe in karma, and it looks like karma has already taken care of you.”¹⁸ Lawson himself called the trial “fundamentally unfair.” On October 1, 2025, he was transferred from the Nelson County Jail to the Little Sandy Correctional Complex to begin serving his sentence.²

The Appeal

Lawson filed a notice of appeal in September 2025, and his attorneys submitted an 88-page appellate brief to the Kentucky Supreme Court on April 15, 2026. The trial court had already denied a request for a new trial.¹⁹

The brief argues the trial judge committed reversible error by denying Lawson’s motion to be tried separately from Houck, contending that Houck’s high-profile involvement “dragged” Lawson’s name through the mud and that evidence admissible against Houck would not have been admissible in a standalone trial. Because Houck did not testify, Lawson was unable to cross-examine him about recorded statements to investigators.²⁰

The appeal also alleges juror misconduct, claiming four jurors should have been struck for cause because of their exposure to media coverage. One juror allegedly lied about discussing the case with her husband, who had also been a potential juror. On evidence, the brief characterizes Steve Lawson’s testimony as “ever-shifting” narratives sometimes “hand-fed to him by detectives” and driven by “empty promises of illusory immunity,” and it alleges Steve Lawson “threw Joey under the bus” to save himself.²⁰ Defense attorneys also argue the prosecution failed to establish an agreement or plan to commit the crime and that the judge should have granted a directed verdict of acquittal.¹⁴

Prosecutors have until June 15, 2026, to file their response. Steven Lawson filed his own appeal on April 9, 2026, and Brooks Houck has filed a motion challenging his conviction.²¹

Background and Criminal History

Joseph Lawson was born in 1991 and grew up in Nelson County. He worked in self-employed construction, had obtained a GED, and had at least two children. He had been largely transient for much of his adult life, spending stretches homeless or sleeping in vehicles and other people’s homes.⁷

His criminal record dates back to 2009 and includes 18 charges across multiple Kentucky counties, ranging from traffic violations to felonies. He had two prior felony convictions: first-degree criminal mischief and methamphetamine possession.²² Between 2009 and 2020, five women accused him of assault or threats. In 2020, following accusations of choking and hitting a woman in Marion County, he was convicted of misdemeanor assault, facilitation to strangulation, and facilitation to unlawful imprisonment, receiving a suspended 90-day jail sentence and two years of probation.⁷
