Justin Sun vs. World Liberty Financial: Fraud and Defamation Cases

The lawsuit between Justin Sun and World Liberty Financial is actually two lawsuits filed on opposite coasts. In April 2026, the crypto billionaire sued the Trump family’s cryptocurrency venture in federal court in California, alleging it fraudulently froze up to $1 billion worth of his digital tokens. Weeks later, World Liberty Financial countersued in Florida state court for defamation, accusing Sun of a public smear campaign after the company blocked his assets for alleged contract violations.1CBS News. How the Dispute Started

Sun, the founder of the Tron blockchain, was World Liberty Financial’s largest early backer. In November 2024, shortly after President Trump won a second term, Sun’s company Blue Anthem Limited paid $30 million for two billion WLFI governance tokens. He added another billion tokens for $15 million in January 2025 and received a further billion tokens as compensation for serving as an advisor, bringing his total to four billion tokens.3Dynamis LLP. The relationship broke down in the second half of 2025. According to Sun’s complaint, World Liberty Financial pushed through an undisclosed smart-contract upgrade on August 24, 2025, that gave the company unilateral power to “blacklist” user holdings. When Sun allegedly refused a demand for $200 million in additional capital, WLF used that new authority to freeze his tokens on September 1, 2025, the same day WLFI began trading on public exchanges.3Dynamis LLP. Trump Justin Sun World Liberty Financial Sun confirmed the freeze publicly on September 4, posting on X that he could neither sell nor move his tokens.

The complaint alleges that WLF co-founder Chase Herro pressured Sun in late September to let his $776 million position be burned and threatened to refer him to U.S. criminal authorities. A second undisclosed smart-contract upgrade in November 2025 gave the company power to destroy tokens outright. The two sides entered a temporary standstill in December 2025, with WLF agreeing not to burn Sun’s holdings. That truce collapsed on April 12, 2026, when WLF publicly ended negotiations and proposed either burning 100 million of Sun’s tokens or locking his advisor tokens indefinitely.3Dynamis LLP. Within hours, Sun took the fight public. He posted to his 3.9 million X followers accusing World Liberty Financial of embedding a “backdoor blacklisting function” and calling the platform a “trap door marketed as an open door.” Over the next three days he published additional posts, including one titled “This Is World Tyranny, Not World Liberty Financial,” describing the company’s governance as a “scam” and a “dictatorship.” The posts appeared in English and Mandarin Chinese and gathered roughly four million views.5New York Post. Why the Trump Family Is in the Middle of This

World Liberty Financial launched in 2024 as a decentralized finance venture. Its co-founders include Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, Barron Trump, Zach Witkoff (son of Steve Witkoff, President Trump’s Special Envoy to the Middle East), Alex Witkoff, Chase Herro, and Zachary Folkman.11DL News. WLFI tokens do not work like traditional company shares. Token holders are not entitled to dividends and do not have formal ownership of the company. The tokens provide only a limited voice in governance, and investors have criticized the project for a centralized governance structure in which the company retains unilateral power to freeze, restrict, or confiscate holdings.13Al Jazeera. Sun brings his own legal history to the dispute. In March 2023, the SEC charged him and three of his companies with unregistered token offerings, orchestrating over 600,000 wash trades, and paying celebrities to promote tokens without disclosing their compensation.14U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Where the Cases Stand Now

As of mid-2026, Sun’s frozen tokens are valued at approximately $240 million, and no settlement talks have been reported.2Fortune. Trump World Liberty Financial Countersuit Justin Sun Defamation Both suits are in their early stages. The first major test is the August 20, 2026, hearing in San Francisco on WLF’s motions to compel arbitration and to dismiss the California case. If arbitration is compelled, the fraud claims move out of federal court entirely; if the case survives, discovery would open up the smart-contract upgrades, the alleged $200 million capital demand, and the terms Sun signed. The Florida defamation case, filed weeks after the California suit, is on its own separate track.
