Paul Sherrod Taylor, a 32-year-old man from Aurora, Illinois, was sentenced in May 2024 to three years in prison for attacking and threatening an Aurora police officer during a 2021 traffic stop. His two sisters, Jennifer and Sheba Taylor, were convicted by a jury for their roles in the same attack and received jail time and probation. What Happened at the Traffic Stop
On June 21, 2021, Aurora Police Officer J. Miranda pulled Paul Sherrod Taylor over for running a stop sign. His two sisters, riding as passengers, refused orders to stay in the car. Taylor then got out himself and refused to get back in. When Officer Miranda tried to handcuff him for obstruction, Taylor shoved the officer and ran.1Fox 32 Chicago. During the chase, Taylor turned, squared into a fighting stance, and yelled at the officer to “keep running, boy.” As Taylor faced off with Officer Miranda, Jennifer and Sheba Taylor attacked, punching him with closed fists and kicking his body and head. Sheba Taylor wrapped her forearm around the officer’s neck and squeezed his windpipe hard enough that he could not breathe. Charges and Convictions
On January 23, 2024, Kane County Judge Alice Tracy found Paul Sherrod Taylor guilty of aggravated battery to a police officer (a Class 2 felony), threatening a public official (Class 3 felony), aggravated assault of a police officer (Class 4 felony), and resisting a peace officer (a Class A misdemeanor).3Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. Four days earlier, on January 19, 2024, a jury convicted both sisters. Sheba Taylor, 29, was found guilty of two counts of aggravated battery to a police officer, aggravated battery on a public way causing bodily harm, and resisting a peace officer causing injury. Sentences
Judge Tracy sentenced Paul Sherrod Taylor on May 17, 2024, to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with three days of credit for time served in the Kane County jail. He was eligible for day-for-day sentencing, which under Illinois law can cut the actual time served roughly in half.
