Kanye West Battery Lawsuit: Chateau Marmont Punch, Podcast Claims

The Kanye West Chateau Marmont lawsuit is a civil case filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on April 13, 2026, by a man suing anonymously as “John Doe,” who alleges the rapper punched him unconscious in the hotel’s garden in April 2024 and then defamed him publicly afterward. The 22-page complaint brings claims of battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress and seeks compensatory and punitive damages before a jury.¹²

What the Lawsuit Says Happened

According to the complaint, the plaintiff was seated at a table with his brother in the private outdoor garden of the Chateau Marmont on the Sunset Strip at around 11 p.m. on April 16, 2024. Ye is alleged to have walked up and punched him in the face without provocation. The blow knocked him to the ground, where he struck his head on the concrete and lost consciousness. The complaint says Ye then “repeatedly punched” him while he lay unconscious before retreating to his security detail and leaving.²

The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed officers responded to the 8200 block of Sunset Boulevard at roughly 12:30 a.m. on April 17, 2024, for a “battery investigation.” No criminal charges have been reported.²

Ye’s Version of Events

Ye’s representatives have offered a different account. They say the plaintiff sexually assaulted Ye’s wife, Bianca Censori, by placing his hands under her dress and grabbing her waist as she walked through the restaurant. A representative told reporters in April 2024 that Censori “was battered and sexually assaulted” and that the hotel’s own incident report, based on surveillance footage and staff statements, backed that account. The same representative denied Ye was a suspect and claimed “police aren’t even investigating.”³²

The complaint rejects that version. It says neither the plaintiff nor his brother “engaged in any offensive or inappropriate conduct toward any woman in defendant’s party” at any point, and that video from the scene confirms it. The filing also states that “this is not a case of mistaken identity in which defendant attacked the wrong brother,” addressing earlier reporting by TMZ that had raised that possibility.⁴

The Podcast Statements Behind the Emotional Distress Claim

The second half of the lawsuit centers on what Ye said publicly after the incident. On an April 2024 episode of The Download with Justin LaBoy, Ye recounted the confrontation, said his wife told him the man had “just grabbed” her, and joked with a laugh that the man “had to go to bed early. Tucked this n—- in.”⁴⁵

The complaint calls those statements false and says Ye “repeated and embellished” the sexual assault accusation to a large audience. The plaintiff says the remarks were “republished and circulated widely across social media” and exposed him to “public scorn, suspicion, and ridicule.” The complaint describes the conduct as “extreme and outrageous conduct beyond all bounds of decency tolerated in a civilized society,” language that tracks the legal standard for intentional infliction of emotional distress.⁶

Why the Plaintiff Is Anonymous

The plaintiff filed as “John Doe,” citing “credible security concerns” and the risk of “further reputational harm.” The complaint describes him as someone whose business depends on his “personal reputation, professional relationships, and public perceptions.” He has said he is willing to be identified if the court issues a protective order.²

He is represented by Robert Shapiro, the Los Angeles defense attorney known for his role on O.J. Simpson’s trial team. “The complaint speaks for itself and the reason we filed it under John Doe is that we wanted to give anonymity to the parties and see if the matter could be resolved confidentially in mediation,” Shapiro said in a statement.⁷

What the Lawsuit Seeks and Where It Stands

The complaint asks for a jury trial and an unspecified amount in damages across three categories: compensatory damages for medical expenses and lost earnings, non-economic damages for emotional distress and reputational harm, and punitive damages. It describes the plaintiff’s injuries as “serious” and his emotional suffering as “severe,” including “anxiety, humiliation, loss of standing in his community and harm to his professional relationships.”⁶¹

As of April 2026, the case is at the initial complaint stage. A representative for Ye did not respond to a request for comment when the lawsuit was filed, and available reporting does not indicate any settlement, dismissal, or later procedural movement.²

Prior Physical Altercation Claims Against Ye

The Chateau Marmont suit is not the first time Ye has been accused of striking or physically confronting someone in public. In 2008, he was arrested at Los Angeles International Airport after breaking the flash on a photographer’s camera.⁸⁹¹⁰ In January 2023, photographer Nichol Lechmanik sued in Ventura County Superior Court, alleging Ye grabbed her phone and threw it into traffic outside a sports academy in Newbury Park, California.

The Chateau Marmont complaint sits alongside a much wider docket. As of early 2025, Ye faced more than two dozen active lawsuits and had told courts he was experiencing “extreme hardship and difficulty retaining litigation counsel” because of negative media coverage.¹¹
