Karen Read’s legal fight did not end with her June 2025 acquittal. Where the Criminal Case Stands
Read was acquitted on June 18, 2025, of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and leaving the scene of a collision resulting in death. Her second trial ran 31 days and included 49 witnesses. The jury convicted her on one count, operating under the influence, and Judge Beverly Cannone sentenced her to one year of probation. A parallel federal investigation into the handling of O’Keefe’s death closed without charges. On March 4, 2025, special prosecutor Hank Brennan told the court the U.S. Attorney’s Office had confirmed “there is no longer any federal investigation into the investigation of John O’Keefe’s death or any related matters. Read’s November 2025 Federal Civil Rights Suit
In November 2025, Read filed suit in Bristol County Superior Court against eight defendants: Brian and Nicole Albert, Jennifer and Matthew McCabe, Brian Higgins, former Massachusetts State Police Trooper Michael Proctor, and state police investigators Yuri Bukhenik and Brian Tully. The complaint alleges malicious prosecution, conspiracy to deprive Read of her Fourth Amendment rights, and civil rights violations. The defendants removed the case to federal court in Boston, arguing that Read’s Fourth Amendment claims raised substantial federal issues.5WCVB. The June 2026 Suit Against State Police and Canton
On June 4, 2026, Read filed a second lawsuit in Bristol County Superior Court, this one against the Massachusetts State Police and the Town of Canton as institutions. The complaint alleges the departments maintained an “embedded culture of bigotry, misogyny, systemic failures, and institutional rot” and failed to train, supervise, and discipline officers who were unfit to investigate crimes.6Fox 17. The suit builds on the conduct of Proctor and former Canton Police Sergeant Sean Goode, arguing their years of bigoted text communications demonstrate both personal unfitness and institutional failure. It alleges Read was “singled out and vilified as an outsider” while officers prioritized “protecting the blue line and their families.” The complaint also faults police for failing to search the Albert home for blood, fingerprints, or DNA evidence until a week after O’Keefe’s death.7ABC News. Read is seeking monetary damages to be determined at trial, attorney’s fees, and a ruling against both departments. Massachusetts State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble condemned the officers’ messages as “entirely inconsistent with any basic standard of decency” and said such conduct “is not tolerated within our ranks.” Canton officials rejected “broad stroke characterizations” of their department, said the town had launched an internal investigation into Goode in October 2025, and pointed to ongoing work implementing findings from an independent audit of the department.9NBC News. The Wrongful Death Suit Against Read
Read is also a defendant. In August 2024, Paul O’Keefe, John’s brother, along with O’Keefe’s parents and niece, sued Read and two Canton bars, C.F. McCarthy’s and the Waterfall Bar & Grille, in Plymouth Superior Court. The complaint alleges the bars served Read while she was visibly intoxicated, claiming McCarthy’s served her seven drinks in 90 minutes, and that Read then drove drunk and killed O’Keefe. As of late 2025, Judge Daniel O’Shea called the case “long and complex,” predicted a trial date more likely in 2027 than 2026, and encouraged the parties to explore settlement. Read’s legal team has signaled plans to fold her own civil claims against investigators and witnesses into this proceeding.11Boston.com. What Happened to the Officers Named in the Suits
Two investigators central to Read’s civil claims have lost their jobs and their police credentials since the criminal case ended.
Michael Proctor, the lead state police investigator, was relieved of duty after the July 2024 mistrial, suspended without pay, and formally fired in March 2025. He initially appealed his termination but withdrew the appeal in October 2025 after additional messages containing racial slurs surfaced.12CBS News Boston. Canton Police Sergeant Sean Goode was placed on administrative leave in October 2025 after his text exchanges with Proctor came to light. He refused to sit for an internal affairs interview, which triggered termination proceedings, then resigned on May 29, 2026, before a hearing could take place.7ABC News. Their departures do not resolve Read’s civil claims against them or against the departments that employed them. Those claims are proceeding.
