Karen Snider Case: 1966 Stabbing, DNA Match, and 2024 Arrest

The 1966 Karen Snider murder was solved in April 2024 when Cook County prosecutors charged seventy-nine-year-old James Barbier, a former family friend and coworker of Karen’s husband, with first-degree murder after DNA testing on preserved crime-scene evidence linked him to the stabbing of the eighteen-year-old mother in her Calumet City, Illinois, home.¹

What Happened on November 12, 1966

Karen Snider was eighteen years old and the mother of a two-month-old daughter. On the night of November 12, 1966, her husband Paul was working an afternoon shift at a local railroad. When Karen stopped answering his phone calls, he left work early and drove home to the 400 block of Wilson Avenue in Calumet City. He found her dead inside the house. Their infant daughter, Paula, was in a bassinet in another room, unharmed.²

An autopsy documented roughly 125 stab wounds across Karen’s chest, head, neck, shoulders, arms, and legs. She had multiple fractured ribs and bruises on her hands and face.³ Someone had tried to wipe up blood in the kitchen and bathroom before leaving.⁴

Why the Case Went Cold

Detectives in 1966 zeroed in quickly on James Barbier, a family friend who worked at the same railroad as Paul Snider. Barbier’s wife told police that her husband came home that night appearing nervous, with blood and cuts on his body and clothes, and that he immediately put his clothing in the washing machine.⁵ Detectives also noticed cuts on Barbier’s hands when he served as a pallbearer at Karen’s funeral.¹

Barbier was arrested in 1966 but never charged. Investigators could not recover clear fingerprints from the scene, and the evidence they had was not enough to prosecute.⁶ Paul Snider spent the rest of his life pushing for the case to be solved. He died in 1989 without seeing an arrest.¹

The Phone Call That Reopened Everything

In December 2022, a twenty-nine-year-old named Kevin Seeley called the Calumet City Police Department. Seeley had grown up hearing his grandmother, Dee, tell stories about Karen Snider’s murder. He recalled hearing the account roughly five times over the years. His grandmother never named a suspect, but his curiosity eventually drove him to pick up the phone.²

That call was enough. Detective Kevin Rapacz led a reopened investigation, and over the next sixteen months detectives re-interviewed witnesses and re-examined physical evidence. The 1966 investigators had documented the case thoroughly and preserved key items, including clothing from the scene and a blood-stained bedsheet.¹

How DNA Closed the Case

The preserved clothing and bedsheet went to the Illinois State Police Forensic Science lab in Chicago for DNA testing. In March 2023, detectives located Barbier in Creve Coeur, Missouri, outside St. Louis, and executed a search warrant to collect a DNA sample from him.⁴

Prosecutors later said DNA found on Karen’s dress and on Barbier’s pants from 1966 “strongly suggested a match to both Barbier and Snider.”⁴ An arrest warrant was issued on April 26, 2024. Barbier was taken into custody without incident at his Missouri home on April 29, brought back to Illinois, and charged with first-degree murder in Cook County Circuit Court.⁵

Charged, Then Released Pending Trial

Barbier made his first court appearance on May 2, 2024, in Markham, Illinois. Despite the first-degree murder charge, prosecutors did not seek pretrial detention. Under the Illinois Pretrial Fairness Act, which requires courts to weigh a defendant’s age and medical condition, prosecutors concluded that Barbier, seventy-nine, with diabetes and a 2023 stroke in his history, could not be treated as “a real and present threat.”⁴

A judge released him under maximum pretrial conditions. Barbier surrendered his passport and firearms, was restricted to travel between Missouri and his Illinois court appearances, and had to report to authorities twice a month.⁵ A status hearing was set for May 21, 2024.¹ The Snider family said they were disappointed that Barbier would remain at home while awaiting trial.⁶

Paula Larson, the infant found unharmed in the bassinet the night her mother was killed, said that when she heard about the arrest, she spoke to her late parents: “Mom and Dad, we got him.” She said her father “98% felt this was the killer” and “fought from the day he found her to the day he died trying to bring this to justice.”⁷
