Kassandra Cantrell Murder Case: Motive, Evidence, and Sentence

The Kassanndra Cantrell murder case ended with her ex-boyfriend, Colin Patrick Dudley, pleading guilty to first-degree murder in November 2022 and receiving 26 years and eight months in Washington state prison. Cantrell, a 33-year-old from Parkland, Washington, was roughly 10 weeks pregnant when Dudley killed her on August 25, 2020, at his Tacoma home. Detectives built the case almost entirely from digital evidence: surveillance video, cellphone forensics, subpoenaed store receipts, and location data pulled from the event data recorder in Dudley’s own truck.¹

What Happened on August 25, 2020

A neighbor’s security camera recorded Cantrell’s white Mazda leaving her mother’s home in Parkland at about 8:25 a.m. She was driving to meet Dudley at his Tacoma home, according to deleted text messages investigators later recovered from his phone.¹ Her cellphone pinged for the last time about four hours later near Point Defiance Park.²

Cantrell had planned to attend her first ultrasound appointment the next day with her best friend, Alexandra McNary.³ When she failed to show and her mother, Marie Smith, could not reach her, the family reported her missing. On August 28, police found her Mazda unlocked and abandoned near Interstate 705 in Tacoma, close to the light rail system.⁴

The Pregnancy Motive

Cantrell had identified Dudley as the father of her unborn child to both her obstetrician and her friends. Friends said she was thrilled about the pregnancy but nervous to tell Dudley, who had made clear he did not want children and whom they described as having an anger problem.⁵ When she told him, she reported to McNary that he was “calm” and said they would talk.³

Charging documents cited Dudley allegedly saying years earlier that if a girlfriend became pregnant and refused an abortion, he would “sue to get full custody, just to spite the mother for having the child.”² Dudley was living with a long-term girlfriend, Rebecca Fischer, who confirmed to police that he “does not want to be a dad.”⁴ He had concealed his contact with Cantrell by saving her in his phone under the name “Velma,” and later told investigators he had not spoken to her in years, though phone records showed the two had communicated as recently as February 2020.⁶

How Digital Evidence Identified Dudley

Detective Franz Helmcke of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department led the investigation. After Cantrell’s car was found near the Tacoma Dome, Helmcke reviewed surveillance footage from the light rail system and the Tacoma Dome Station parking garage. It showed a heavyset man in a black fedora walking away from Cantrell’s Mazda, entering the garage, and driving off in a truck. The garage cameras captured the truck’s license plate, which was registered to Colin Dudley. Helmcke had already interviewed him and recognized his build and gait. The figure became known during the investigation as the “Hat Man,” a nickname Dudley himself was known to use.¹

Several other lines of evidence closed the case:

An emergency trace on Cantrell’s phone led investigators to Owen Beach at Point Defiance Park, where the Pierce County Metro Dive Team recovered the device from Puget Sound. Detective Ryan Salmon used phone company records and recovered deleted text messages to confirm Cantrell had planned to meet Dudley at his home that morning.¹
Subpoenaed Costco receipts showed Dudley bought a box of 50-gallon heavy-duty trash bags at 7:00 a.m. on August 25, before Cantrell arrived.¹
Investigators pulled location data from the event data recorder in Dudley’s Chevy Colorado. It showed the truck had traveled to a wooded ravine early on August 26, and the data pointed police to the site where Cantrell’s remains were later found.¹
A September 1 search warrant at Dudley’s home turned up blood evidence in the basement, where cadaver dogs alerted, along with a black fedora matching the surveillance footage. Video also showed Dudley had dismantled his own home security cameras on the day Cantrell disappeared.⁵

Discovery of Cantrell’s Remains

On September 22, 2020, guided by the truck’s GPS data, detectives located Cantrell’s remains in a heavily wooded ravine along Chambers Creek Road in University Place, roughly 10 miles from Dudley’s home. Her body had been wrapped in garbage bags and disposed of over a steep hillside.⁷ Helmcke confirmed her identity by recognizing a tattoo her mother had described: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing.”³ The medical examiner found major skull fractures consistent with blunt force trauma along with stab wounds.² Dudley was arrested the same day.

Charge, Plea, and Sentence

Dudley, then 37, was charged with one count of first-degree murder on September 25, 2020, in Pierce County Superior Court. Prosecutors added a special enhancement because of Cantrell’s pregnancy.⁸ Before Judge James Orlando, Dudley pleaded not guilty, and bail was set at $2 million. Deputy prosecutor Lisa Wagner told the court that Dudley “didn’t have other known criminal history.”⁵

On November 14, 2022, Dudley changed his plea to guilty and waived his right to a trial. He was sentenced to 26 years and eight months (320 months). With good behavior, he could be eligible for release as early as 2044.⁴ As of January 2024, he was serving his sentence at Stafford Creek Corrections Center.⁹ No separate charges were filed for the death of the unborn child.

The Family’s Push to Change Washington Law

Marie Smith, Cantrell’s mother, had helped investigators by providing phone records that linked Dudley to her daughter. After sentencing, she said she could find no comfort in the concept of “justice” and that true justice “would be trading his life for hers.”¹⁰

The plea agreement, which avoided trial, distressed the family and the volunteers who had searched for Cantrell. They advocated for a Washington law that would impose an automatic life sentence when someone is convicted of knowingly killing a pregnant woman.⁴ Carlie Whipple, one of the search volunteers who attended Dudley’s court appearances, called publicly for additional charges tied to the unborn child, saying, “How should that baby not count? That’s a life.”¹⁰
