Kat West Case: Trial Theories, Verdict, and Appeals

The Kat West case ended with her husband, Jeff West, convicted of reckless manslaughter in November 2020 and sentenced to 16 years in prison for causing the January 13, 2018 death of the 42-year-old Alabama mother and online adult model, whose body was found outside their Calera home in a scene prosecutors called staged and the defense called a drunken fall.¹

How Kat West Was Found

Just before dawn on January 13, 2018, a 19-year-old neighbor driving to work spotted Kat West lying partially in the road across from her home on Greenwood Circle. She was face-down, wearing only a pink sports bra, with her legs in a neighbor’s grass. A cell phone lay nearby with a bottle of Lucid Absinthe set on top of it. A large pool of blood was visible a few feet away.¹

Calera Police Sergeant Mike Mehlhoff, the lead investigator, arrived shortly before 6 a.m. He described the placement of the phone and the bottle as appearing “staged.” Investigators also noted two separate blood pools, one on the pavement and one in the grass, which suggested the body had been moved after the fatal injury.²

The night before, security video captured Jeff and Kat West buying alcohol at a liquor store, where a clerk said they were “smiling and laughing” on what looked like a date night.³ After they returned home, Jeff posted a photo of a bottle of Lucid Absinthe on Instagram.⁴

Why Police Zeroed In on Jeff West

Because of Kat’s online following, detectives first examined whether a stalker from her subscription-based adult website could be responsible. They spent roughly three weeks reviewing thousands of subscriber names and turned up no viable suspects. Calera Police Chief Sean Lemley later said Jeff West had been the primary suspect from the beginning.³

Jeff West, a campus police officer at Birmingham-Southern College and an Army veteran, told investigators he had fallen asleep around 10:30 p.m. and did not wake until roughly 5:15 a.m., when his dogs began barking at police lights outside. In a 90-minute recorded interview, he insisted, “I would not hurt my wife.”⁵

Two data trails cut against that account. Records from the home’s ADT alarm system showed the front door opening at 10:53 p.m. on January 12 and again at 1:51 a.m. on January 13, then remaining open until after 5 a.m. Jeff West’s own phone Health App logged 18 steps between 11:03 and 11:10 p.m., contradicting the claim that he had been asleep since 10:30.¹ Evidence technicians photographing Jeff West the following day noted a scratch on his arm.⁶

On February 23, 2018, roughly six weeks after his wife’s death, Jeff West was charged with murder. The warrant alleged he “caused the death of Kathleen Dawn West, with a weapon/bottle of Lucid Absinthe.”⁷ Bail was set at $500,000, and he remained in the Shelby County Jail through trial.⁴

Who Kat West Was

Kat West married Jeff West in 2004, and the couple had a daughter, born in 2005, who went by both Logan and Lola.¹ Under the name “Kitty Kat West,” she ran a subscription-only adult website and maintained OnlyFans, Twitter, and Instagram accounts where she posted provocative photos, drawing roughly 50,000 followers. Jeff West helped photograph her for her subscribers.²

Her online life shaped public reaction to the case. Reporter Carol Robinson said Kat was seen as “a sympathetic victim to many” and “an unsympathetic victim to many” depending on views of her lifestyle. Her mother, Nancy Martin, said Kat was judged for “doing these things that small towns don’t understand.”

Two Theories at Trial

The four-day trial began in November 2020 in Shelby County before Judge William Bostick III. Assistant District Attorneys Daniel McBrayer and Ben Fuller led the prosecution with District Attorney Jill Lee; John Robbins represented Jeff West.¹

Prosecution: A Staged Scene

Prosecutors argued the marriage was “on the rocks” over Kat’s drinking and social media presence. ADA McBrayer told jurors an argument led Jeff West to throw Kat’s phone out the front door; when she went to retrieve it, he struck her in the head with the absinthe bottle. They said he then placed the bottle atop the cracked phone and moved her body into the street to mimic a car strike.⁸

A crime analyst testified that Jeff West’s left thumb and left ring finger prints appeared on the absinthe bottle in an inverted position, indicating it had been gripped by the neck rather than the base. Two swabs from the bottom of the bottle tested positive for Kat West’s blood, and an examiner noted dried blood and a small chip on the base.⁹

Dr. Stephen Boudreau, a pathologist with the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, testified that Kat West died from blunt force trauma to the left side of the head. He described a two-inch-long skull laceration caused by an object with an edge, requiring “a considerable amount of force.” Given her small stature of about five feet two, he testified the injury was “not likely” caused by a fall and said the absinthe bottle was “consistent with the injuries,” though he could not definitively confirm it was the weapon.¹⁰ Texts from Kat’s phone showed recent marital tension, including one that read, “You’re throwing away 14 years of marriage.”⁹

Defense: A Drunken Fall

Robbins argued Kat West’s death was an accident. Her blood alcohol content at the time of death was .23, nearly three times Alabama’s legal driving limit, and analysis of her eye fluid showed her BAC had been .284 earlier in the evening.¹⁰

The defense pressed on forensic gaps. No blood, DNA, hair, or brain tissue was recovered from the absinthe bottle.¹ No glass fragments were found in Kat West’s head wound.¹⁰ An alternate light source check of every drain and sink in the home revealed no blood, and there were no signs of a struggle inside.⁹ Robbins argued it would have been “physically impossible” for Jeff West to move the body without getting blood on his own clothing.¹¹

The defense also introduced affectionate texts between the couple. Jeff West took the stand in his own defense.¹²

Verdict and Sentence

On November 20, 2020, the jury rejected murder and convicted Jeff West of the lesser included offense of reckless manslaughter.¹³ The verdict meant jurors held him responsible for the death without finding it was intentional.

On February 8, 2021, Judge Bostick sentenced him to 16 years in prison, with credit for roughly three years already served in the Shelby County Jail. Prosecutors had asked for the 20-year statutory maximum.¹ The judge said he did not believe Jeff West “woke up and decided to kill his wife” but agreed with the jury that the death “could have been avoided.”¹¹

The hearing was unusual for who spoke on the defendant’s behalf. Kat West’s own mother, Nancy Martin, asked for leniency and said she believed Jeff was innocent; the judge said he gave her testimony less weight, adding, “In my opinion, she’s ignored the evidence in this case.”¹ The couple’s daughter Logan, then 15, called her father her “shield against the world” and asked the court, “Please give me my father back as soon as possible.”¹⁴

Appeals and Where the Case Stands

Jeff West appealed. The Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals rejected his challenge in the fall of 2021, and the Alabama Supreme Court denied his subsequent appeal on January 7, 2022. After initial processing at Kilby Correctional Facility, prison records as of early 2022 showed him serving his sentence in a community-based program.¹⁵

Custody of the Wests’ daughter was granted to Kat’s parents, who share caregiving responsibilities with Jeff West’s parents.¹ Kat West’s father, John Martin, has continued to defend his son-in-law publicly, saying, “I know he didn’t do it.”⁴ The case was featured in a CBS 48 Hours episode titled “The Mysterious Death of Kat West.”¹⁶ With his appeals exhausted, Jeff West continues to serve his 16-year sentence.
