The Black Chevrolet Impala
Kentucky State Police out of Post 4 in Elizabethtown have led the investigation from the start and collected hundreds of pieces of evidence from the scene.1WLKY. Netherland Murders in Nelson County, Kentucky2WAVE 3 News. Decade After Gruesome Bardstown Deaths, Family Gives New Details in Netherland Case About a week after the murders, KSP released the single most specific piece of information made public in the case: investigators were looking for a 2006-to-2013 model black Chevrolet Impala.
The car had been captured on surveillance video at a gas station about half a mile from the Netherland home, traveling northbound on U.S. 150 from Botland into Bardstown on the night of the killings. KSP asked anyone who owned, had access to, or knew someone driving a matching Impala that night to call 270-766-5078.3WAVE 3 News. KSP: Black Chevy Impala Was Suspect Vehicle in Nelson Co. What the Family Says the Footage Shows
Most of what the public knows beyond the car description has come from Stacey Hibbard, Kathy’s sister. She has described in detail what she says KSP’s surveillance footage from a liquor store across the street from the Netherland home captured.
According to Hibbard, the video shows a black Chevy Impala driving past the house, looping around Botland within a minute or two, and pulling in behind the property. A “dark figure” then walks across the porch to the front door, where “someone appears to let that person in.” The vehicle leaves less than 15 minutes later. KSP has never released that footage publicly.2WAVE 3 News. Decade After Gruesome Bardstown Deaths, Family Gives New Details in Netherland Case
The suggestion that Kathy or Samantha may have let the person in is consistent with investigators’ earlier description of the killings as targeted. Hibbard has also said she believes Kathy was shot first in the living room and that Samantha, who she thinks was the “main target,” was attacked moments after coming out of her room, pointing to the specific and brutal nature of Samantha’s injuries compared with the single gunshot that killed her mother.2WAVE 3 News. Hibbard has described the case as a mystery even to those who knew the victims best. She told CBS News, “It really is a who-dunnit. They just both seem to live lives that didn’t put them in contact with people who would wish them harm,” comparing their household to something out of “Leave it to Beaver.”5CBS News. Is the Case Connected to Bardstown’s Other Unsolved Crimes?
Bardstown has drawn national attention for several other unsolved violent cases: the 2013 ambush killing of Officer Jason Ellis, the 2015 disappearance of Crystal Rogers, and the 2016 shooting death of her father, Tommy Ballard. In January 2023, special prosecutor Shane Young was appointed to investigate the Ellis, Rogers, and Ballard cases, and three men have since been charged in connection with Rogers’ disappearance.11WDRB.
