Katie McLean Case: Killing, Trial, and Sentencing

The Katie McLean case ended in May 2025 with her husband, former Boston-area urologist Dr. Ingolf Tuerk, sentenced to 12 to 16 years in state prison for voluntary manslaughter. A Norfolk Superior Court jury acquitted him of first-degree murder but convicted him of the lesser charge after hearing that he strangled the 45-year-old mother of three inside their Dover, Massachusetts, home on May 14, 2020, then dumped her body in a nearby pond weighed down with rocks.¹

Who Katie McLean Was

Kathleen “Katie” McLean was born on August 15, 1974, and grew up in Belmont, Massachusetts. She studied occupational therapy at Mount Ida College, taught at Plymouth Nursery School as “Miss Kate,” and later worked as a Reiki master running a business called Birch Tree Energy and Healing.² She had three children from her previous marriage to Steven Rocca: Sophia, Mary Grace, and Sam.³ Her sister, Beth Melanson, later described her as “vibrant and full of life,” with a world that “centered around her three babies.”⁴

McLean met Tuerk through an online dating app and married him in a Las Vegas drive-through chapel in December 2019. She, her children, and Tuerk’s two children from a previous marriage moved into his home on Valley Road in Dover.⁵

Abuse Reports Before the Killing

The marriage deteriorated within weeks. According to police reports later detailed in coverage of the case, McLean reported that in December 2019 Tuerk grabbed her, smashed her head into a headboard, and placed his hands over her throat, nose, and mouth. In January 2020, she reported he picked her up and dropped her on her back, and later that month cut a lock of her hair with scissors, causing a cut on her hand. She also said he tracked her location through an app, demanded to see her phone, monitored her weight, installed surveillance cameras, and restricted her access to vehicles.⁵

After Tuerk pushed her to the floor in front of his son on Super Bowl Sunday in February 2020, McLean went to the Dover Police Station and obtained an abuse-prevention order from a Dedham District Court judge. Police removed Tuerk from the home when he refused to leave, and he was later arrested for violating the order after using the home’s smart thermostat to turn down the heat remotely. Criminal assault charges followed.⁵

During the early months of the pandemic, the couple tried to reconcile. On May 4, 2020, McLean asked a judge to lift the abuse-prevention order, and the judge did. The criminal charges remained pending, and Tuerk’s bail conditions still barred him from the Valley Road home.⁵

The Night of May 14, 2020

On the evening of May 14, 2020, Tuerk was at the Dover home with McLean and her three children in violation of his bail conditions.⁵ An argument broke out. In statements he later gave police and at trial, Tuerk said McLean struck him in the head with a glass. He told investigators he “reacted to that aggressive situation and choked Katie,” that she “was fighting at first and he continued to choke her,” and that she “passed out and he realized he went too far.”⁶

Tuerk did not call 911. He placed McLean’s body in the passenger seat of her car, drove to a small pond near the house, and dumped her in the water, weighing her down with rocks placed inside her yoga pants.¹ He returned home, then sent text messages to a neighbor and several friends calling McLean a “vindictive devil” who “played us all.”⁷ He drove to a Residence Inn in Dedham and attempted suicide.⁶

The Investigation and Confession

Massachusetts State Police began investigating McLean’s disappearance on May 15, 2020. The next day, officers found Tuerk unresponsive at the hotel with cuts on his forehead and wrist. At the hospital, Sgt. Jeffrey Kotkowski pressed him on where McLean was. Tuerk confessed and directed officers to the pond, where Lt. John Fanning found her body floating face down. The medical examiner, Dr. Michelle Matthews, ruled the cause of death as strangulation. A retired forensic pathologist called at trial, Dr. Elizabeth Laposota, described the fatal injuries as a single, forceful, one-handed application of pressure to the neck.⁷

The Trial and Verdict

Tuerk was held in custody from his arrest until his trial began nearly five years later. The trial opened on March 27, 2025, in Norfolk Superior Court before Judge Mark A. Hallal.⁸ Assistant Norfolk District Attorney Lisa Beatty prosecuted; defense attorney Kevin Reddington represented Tuerk.⁹

Beatty argued that Tuerk killed McLean intentionally, driven by fear of losing his money and his home in a divorce. She emphasized that he never called 911, never tried to resuscitate his wife, and disposed of her body “like a piece of trash.”¹⁰

Reddington conceded from the start that Tuerk killed McLean but argued there was no premeditation and no intent to kill. He invoked self-defense, telling jurors, “He defended himself. There’s an intent for self-preservation.”¹¹ The defense portrayed McLean as motivated by money, and introduced flirtatious and sexually explicit text messages between McLean and a neighbor, Curt Pfannenstiehl, who admitted under cross-examination to a flirtatious relationship with her.⁷

Tuerk took the stand on April 8, 2025. He testified that on the night of May 14 he told McLean about a text from a female acquaintance. According to his account, McLean became “extremely angry,” found the texts on his phone, and threw a glass at his head. “I snapped, I kind of blacked out,” Tuerk said. “I grabbed her. On the neck.”⁴

After roughly six hours of deliberation on April 10, 2025, the jury acquitted Tuerk of first-degree murder and convicted him of the lesser-included charge of voluntary manslaughter.⁷

The Sentence

Tuerk was sentenced on May 16, 2025, five years to the day after McLean’s death, in Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham. Judge Hallal sentenced him to 12 to 16 years at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center, with credit for more than 1,000 days already served in pretrial custody.¹²

Before the sentence was imposed, McLean’s children and sister spoke. Mary Grace Rocca, then 21, told the court about waking the night her mother was killed: “Five years ago I woke up in the middle of the night, looked down the stairs and saw Harry Tuerk. I instantly knew something bad had happened.”⁹ Sophia said, “A part of me was forever lost when the monster stole my mother in the dark.” Sam Rocca, who was 13 when his mother was killed, told the court: “It’s hard to have a childhood when you can’t sleep, you’re crying all the time and just everything feels like a lot and you have no mom to tell you, ‘don’t worry, it’ll be OK.'”⁴

Tuerk read an apology letter aloud. “I’m sorry, Katie,” he said. “I think about you every day. I wish I could make it all un-happen.” Judge Hallal called the conduct “truly disturbing” and said, “I can’t imagine a human being’s last moments on earth while being strangled by her husband.” He added that although Tuerk was not separately charged with improper disposal of human remains, McLean’s body had been “truly discarded like a bag of trash.”¹² As of the sentencing date, no appeal had been publicly reported.
