Keith Ervin: Censure, Assault Charge, and 2026 Election

Keith Ervin is a member of the Washington County, Tennessee school board who was unanimously censured by his colleagues, charged with misdemeanor assault, and hit with a county commission no-confidence vote after telling a teenage student board member “God, you’re hot, you know that?” during a public meeting on April 2, 2026. He has refused to resign. His first court appearance is set for August 2026, the same month voters decide whether to return him to the board.

What Happened at the April 2 Meeting

During a regularly scheduled Washington County Board of Education meeting, Ervin turned to a female high school student sitting beside him and said, “God, you’re hot, you know that? Where do you go to school at?”1WSMV. School Board Member Censured Over Comment Toward Student in Tennessee She answered that she attended David Crockett High School. The exchange was captured on the meeting livestream. Once the footage circulated, Ervin said the clip lacked context and that calling the student “hot” meant she was “on a roll” because of her engagement during the meeting. “It was nothing to do with her appearance,” he said. “I’m not always good with words.”1WSMV. The Censure

At an emergency meeting on April 8, 2026, the Washington County Board of Education voted unanimously to censure Ervin, with Ervin himself abstaining.4NBC News. Board Chair Annette Buchanan rejected Ervin’s explanation. “Mr. Ervin knows his own intentions, but the rest of us have to judge his words and his actions. What we saw was shocking. He objectified and diminished a young woman publicly. No explanation can justify that.”6WSMV. Tennessee School Board Member Says Comment to Student During Board Meeting

On April 27, 2026, the Washington County Commission went further and voted no confidence in Ervin by voice vote, with only one dissent. County Attorney Allyson Wilkinson called the vote nonbinding but said it fully communicated “a loss of confidence in leadership.”7Johnson City Press. The Assault Charge

A grand jury indicted Ervin on May 11, 2026, and a formal charge of misdemeanor assault, specifically “assault — physical contact,” was filed on May 18, 2026, with a listed violation date of April 2, 2026.8USA Today. As of late May 2026, court records did not list an attorney for Ervin, and he declined to comment on the charge. His first court appearance is scheduled for August 2026.3NBC News. The Student’s Response

The student at the center of the case, Hannah Campbell, addressed the board on May 7, 2026, in a four-minute speech. She called the board members “cowards” for not removing Ervin and said their inaction had hurt her as much as his behavior.9NBC News. She singled out the chair’s handling of the meeting, saying it was “disgusting” to watch her “be so quick to bang her gavel to control the public yet not use it once in order to control her own peer.” Campbell said Ervin had never behaved that way toward any male student member. “I do not forgive you, and I do not accept your fake apologies used to protect yourselves,” she told the board, closing by sarcastically thanking them for “teaching me that no one will stand up for me besides myself.”10WVLT. Why He’s Still on the Board

Under Tennessee law, elected school board members cannot be fired by their colleagues or by the county commission. The board has said repeatedly that censure is its only disciplinary tool and that removal requires either a criminal conviction or a formal ouster proceeding.5WCYB. Tennessee’s Ouster Act permits removal of county officials through a civil proceeding on grounds that include knowing or willful misconduct in office, or committing an act under a penal statute involving moral turpitude. A proceeding can be initiated by the attorney general, the district attorney general, or a petition of ten citizens who post security for costs. Courts treat ouster as a “drastic statute” to be used only in “plain cases that can be certainly proved.”11County Technical Assistance Service (University of Tennessee). The August 2026 Election

Ervin’s seat was already on the 2026 ballot, and the election has become the most likely route to removing him. In the May 5, 2026, Republican primary for the first district school board seat, three candidates ran for three GOP nominations, so all three advanced. The vote totals were lopsided: Ervin placed last with 999 votes, behind Vince Walters at 1,542 and Annette Buchanan at 1,480.12WVLT. The August 6, 2026, general election has five candidates competing for three seats: Republicans Ervin, Buchanan, and Walters; Democrat Mary Grace Wooten; and certified write-in candidate Jimmy Johnson, a former teacher running on a platform of “no scandals” and mandatory sexual harassment training for the board. Johnson initially wrote in his own name during the primary as a protest before launching a formal campaign.13WCYB. A Prior Censure in 2009

The 2026 incident is not Ervin’s first censure. In October 2009, Ervin walked into a classroom at David Crockett High School unannounced. During a discussion in which a student mentioned earning eight dollars an hour, Ervin performed what records described as a “lewd, juvenile gesture of a sexual nature” in front of the class and two teachers.14WCYB. Available records do not indicate that the restriction was ever formally lifted.
