The Kellie Pickler lawsuit that has drawn attention since 2024 is a Tennessee probate fight between the country singer and her late husband’s parents over his estate. Songwriter Kyle Jacobs died by suicide in February 2023 without a will, and his parents, Reed and Sharon Jacobs, were appointed co-administrators after Pickler declined the role.1AOL. Why Kellie Pickler Court Battle Since then, the two sides have fought over who owns which items in the Nashville home, whether the in-laws took property without permission, and who should control the estate itself. As of mid-2026, none of the core ownership questions have been decided.
How the Dispute Started
Jacobs died on February 17, 2023, at age 49, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.2Billboard. Pickler later sued Reed and Sharon Jacobs, alleging they entered her home after her husband’s death and removed personal property without her permission. She asked the court to order them to produce an itemized list of what they took.3AOL. What Property Is Being Fought Over
In April 2024, the Jacobs family issued a subpoena demanding a wide range of items they say belong to their son’s estate. The list included:
- An extensive gun collection, a gun safe, and a Samurai sword
- A Steinway Grand Model M piano, a 1957 J45 Gibson guitar, a McPherson KOA guitar, and a viola
- A Rolex watch, a Garmin watch, cufflinks, and rings
- A work laptop, an iPhone, and hard drives
- Baseball card albums, school awards, and family photo books5Country Thang Daily. Kellie Pickler Just Won a Legal Fight Against Her In-Laws Over Her Late Husbands Property
Pickler has said she either does not possess certain items on the list or disputes that they belong to the estate rather than to her personally.6Taste of Country. The Prenup and Why Ownership Is Contested
Pickler and Jacobs signed a prenuptial agreement before their January 1, 2011 marriage. The Jacobs family has pointed to that agreement to argue specific disputed items should be treated as Kyle’s “separate property,” and they built their subpoena around a “List of Assets” document based on its terms.3AOL. Kellie Pickler Scores Legal Victory Pickler has challenged that reading. The agreement itself has not been made public.
Under Tennessee law, a surviving spouse married for nine years or more may claim an elective share of up to 40 percent of the net estate, but a valid prenuptial agreement can waive or limit those inheritance rights.6Taste of Country. What the Courts Have Done So Far
The fight escalated in March 2025, when the Jacobs family filed a motion asking the court to hold Pickler in contempt for allegedly failing to comply with their subpoena.9Taste of Country. Kellie Pickler Legal Court Battle Late Husband Parents Reasons
Two months later, in May 2025, Pickler filed an amended petition asking the court to remove Reed and Sharon Jacobs as co-administrators, declare her the sole heir and beneficiary, and order a full accounting of how the parents had managed the estate. The parents responded with a brief calling her conduct “shockingly callous and lacking in empathy” and accusing her of turning a routine probate matter into a “highly personal crucible.”8Yahoo News. They also alleged that over the preceding year Pickler agreed to hand over items but repeatedly stalled, at one point saying she “could not find” property she had previously acknowledged possessing, and that she eventually barred Sharon Jacobs from the property.10Newsbreak. On November 25, 2025, a Tennessee judge ruled in Pickler’s favor on the subpoena issue, declaring it “void and unenforceable” because the Jacobs family had never filed a formal complaint or petition against her. The judge described the subpoena as “unusual on its face,” noting it demanded the physical delivery of large, heavy personal property rather than documents.11Yahoo Entertainment. Where Things Stand
The November 2025 ruling quashed the subpoena but did not decide who owns any of the disputed property. The Jacobs family retains the option to re-file through proper procedures or to pursue a separate action for the monetary value of the items they claim belong to the estate.1AOL. Pickler’s petition to remove Reed and Sharon Jacobs as co-administrators and to be named sole heir has not yet been ruled on, and the parents have formally opposed both requests.6Taste of Country. A Separate, Unrelated Lawsuit
One other case sometimes gets confused with the estate fight and is worth separating out. In February 2025, Nigel Edge, a man formerly known as Sean DeBevoise, filed a lawsuit alleging Pickler had tried to kill him by handing him a poisoned glass of Jim Beam whiskey at the 2012 CMT Music Awards. He filed it without an attorney, and a federal court dismissed the case in October 2025 for failing to state a valid legal claim, with the judge calling the allegations “non-sensical and delusional.”12TMZ.
