Kenneth Burno and the Hit List Murder of John Davis

Kenneth Burno is a Philadelphia man convicted of first-degree murder in 2004 for the December 2001 execution-style killing of John Davis, a warehouse supervisor shot in a Montgomery County, Pennsylvania parking lot. Prosecutors proved the killing was part of a broader conspiracy in which Burno forced his girlfriend, Vernell Jones, to help him target men he suspected of sleeping with her. He is serving life in prison without the possibility of parole and has lost every appeal he has filed.1Justia. Commonwealth v. Burno

The Murder of John Davis

John I. Davis Jr. was a 36-year-old night supervisor at a David’s Bridal warehouse in Whitemarsh Township. He worked several jobs and had no known enemies.2Times Herald. Mystery Surrounds Whitemarsh Murder

On the evening of December 17, 2001, Davis drove to the warehouse parking lot after receiving urgent calls from Vernell Jones, a former coworker. He had told a colleague he worried the meeting might be a setup.3Times Herald. Woman Arrested for Murdering Her Ex-Boyfriend According to prosecutors, Burno hid in the back of Davis’s Nissan van. Once Jones lured Davis inside, Burno emerged and shot him in the back of the head.4The Morning Call. Davis was found the next morning in the driver’s seat of his van, engine still running, foot on the brake, with $700 in cash in his pockets. Robbery was ruled out. An autopsy confirmed three gunshot wounds from the same weapon.3Times Herald. The Hit List

Davis was not the only intended victim. In the summer of 2001, Burno accused Jones of sleeping with other men and made her write down five names. He gave her an ultimatum: kill all five, or the relationship was over.6The Morning Call. The first target was Ronald Humphrey, a Philadelphia firefighter who had been briefly involved with Jones. In October 2001, Jones lured Humphrey to a secluded area of Fairmount Park and shot him in the arm. He survived. Jones later described herself as a “poor shot,” and Burno, who had driven her to the scene and waited nearby, was unable to finish the attack.8The Reporter. Black Widow Testifies at Trial5Oxygen. Acting Whitemarsh Township Police Chief Jesse Stemple told reporters he believed the pair would have kept going: “I think they would have attempted to kill these people until one or the other was caught.”7The Intelligencer. Philly Man Held in Alleged Murder Plot

Who Kenneth Burno Was

Before the crimes, Burno had been a member of a Philadelphia boy band called Unique Attraction. According to reporting on the case, the group he left eventually evolved into Boyz II Men. Burno walked away when an ex-girlfriend became pregnant, ending his music career before it took off.9Yahoo News. Black Widow Hit List5Oxygen. Why Did Vernell Jones and Kenneth Burno Kill John Davis

When he met Jones, an aspiring singer, he began managing her career and trying to make her a star. Their roughly five-year relationship was deeply abusive. Jones told investigators Burno dictated who she spoke to, where she went, and how she spent her money. He punched her, pulled her hair, slammed her head into vehicles, and took nearly all of her paychecks.10Our Midland. Arrest, Trial, and Life Sentence

Jones was arrested on December 23, 2001, and held without bail.3Times Herald. Woman Arrested for Murdering Her Ex-Boyfriend She eventually pleaded guilty to aggravated assault for the Humphrey shooting and, in December 2002, to third-degree murder and conspiracy for Davis’s death, agreeing to testify against Burno in exchange for avoiding a first-degree murder charge.11The Reporter. Man Found Guilty in Black Widow Killing Prosecutors nicknamed her the “Black Widow.”

Burno was arrested on December 17, 2002, exactly one year after the killing, at his Philadelphia home. He was charged with first-degree murder and related offenses and held without bail. Then-District Attorney Bruce Castor called him “a controlling, very, very violent and, based on these facts I would suggest, a very evil man.”12The Reporter. Murder Suspect Arrested

The case went to trial in Montgomery County before Judge Thomas M. Del Ricci, with chief of trials Kevin R. Steele prosecuting. Jones was the central witness. She described the controlling relationship, the creation of the list, and the killing itself. Steele told jurors the conspiracy was “all about Kenny” and pointed to tattoos on Jones’s body marking her as Burno’s property to show his control and motive.11The Reporter. Defense attorney Tariq El-Shabazz argued Jones acted alone, calling her “cunning and conniving” and claiming she had invented her account to retaliate after Burno sent her a breakup letter from prison. El-Shabazz conceded Burno was no “saint” but said the prosecution had not proven he was involved in the shooting itself.11The Reporter. Man Found Guilty in Black Widow Killing

On April 26, 2004, the jury convicted Burno of first-degree murder, criminal conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, and unsworn falsification to authorities. He was acquitted of a misdemeanor possession of an instrument of crime charge.6The Morning Call. Where Burno’s Case Stands Now

Burno has spent more than two decades trying to overturn his conviction, and every court has turned him down. His direct appeal was denied by the Pennsylvania Superior Court in 2005, with the state Supreme Court declining further review that same year. His first petition under Pennsylvania’s Post Conviction Relief Act was denied after a hearing, affirmed by the Superior Court in 2011, and left undisturbed by the state Supreme Court in 2012.1Justia. Commonwealth v. Burno

In federal court, U.S. District Judge Stewart Dalzell denied Burno’s habeas corpus petition on August 8, 2013, and refused to issue a certificate of appealability, finding no reasonable jurist could debate the outcome.13GovInfo. Burno v. Wetzel A second PCRA petition filed in March 2022 was dismissed as untimely, and the Superior Court affirmed in 2023. A third petition, raising arguments about minority representation in jury selection drawn from a 2003 report, was dismissed as untimely in May 2024. On April 8, 2025, the Pennsylvania Superior Court affirmed that dismissal, finding Burno failed to satisfy any exception to the PCRA’s one-year deadline and that the 2003 report was a public record he could have found earlier with reasonable diligence.1Justia. Commonwealth v. Burno

As of that ruling, Kenneth Burno remains incarcerated, serving his life sentence without the possibility of parole.
