Kevin Gates in Jail: 180-Day Battery and 30-Month Gun Case

Kevin Gates has done two significant stretches of jail time: a 180-day sentence in Polk County, Florida, for a 2015 battery conviction, followed immediately by a 30-month Illinois prison sentence for felony gun possession, of which he served nine months before being paroled in January 2018. Combined, the Baton Rouge rapper spent roughly a year and a half behind bars between late 2016 and early 2018.

Florida Battery Sentence: 180 Days

The first stretch came out of an incident at Rumors Niteclub in Lakeland, Florida, on August 30, 2015. A 19-year-old fan, Miranda Dixon, grabbed Gates’ shorts twice during his performance, and Gates kicked her back into the crowd. She reported bruising and a brief loss of consciousness in the police report.1Billboard. Kevin Gates Charged With Battery for Kicking Woman He was charged with misdemeanor battery.

The warrant went back to an October 29, 2013 stop in the 7200 block of South Stony Island Avenue in Chicago, where Gates was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm. The prior felony that made the possession illegal was a 2013 Illinois conviction for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Parole Restrictions After Release

Getting out did not mean going free to tour. Gates was initially restricted to Cook County, which knocked out scheduled show dates. Louisiana Prison Ban: No Jail Time

A 2019 episode inside a Louisiana prison is often lumped in with Gates’ jail history, but it did not add to his time served. That July, he visited inmates at the Elayn Hunt Correctional Center in St. Gabriel and posted Instagram photos flashing large amounts of cash. Cash over $300 counts as contraband under facility policy.11WBTV. Photo of Kevin Gates Flashing Cash in Louisiana Prison Spurs Investigation Investigators found staff had let him skip the body scanner and other screening, and that he had gotten in to see an inmate named Gates by falsely claiming they were related. Deputy Warden Perry Stagg was demoted and reassigned to Angola with a pay cut, Major Jason Linzy got a letter of counseling, and Gates was banned from all Louisiana Department of Corrections facilities. Investigators floated a criminal referral but noted that “without evidence of the contraband, prosecution would be unlikely.” No charges followed.12WAFB. Current Legal Matters

Gates’ latest legal trouble is civil, not criminal. His estranged wife, Dreka Gates, filed for divorce in July 2025 and is seeking $27,193 a month in child support and $46,274 a month in spousal support for their two children, Islah and Khaza. She alleges the children have spent 95 percent of their time with her since 2023 and that Gates stopped paying property taxes and private school tuition in 2021 while buying 18 luxury vehicles and a $4.7 million home in Calabasas, California.13Complex.
