Kaine Horman is Kyron’s biological father. Kyron’s biological mother is Desiree Young. Kiara is Kyron’s younger half-sister through their father.
Why Custody Became Contested
Investigators focused on Terri Horman early, citing what they described as inconsistencies in her account. A separate allegation reshaped the custody picture. In late June 2010, Kaine Horman filed an affidavit stating that investigators had given him “probable cause to believe” Terri had attempted to hire someone to murder him.4CBS News. The Restraining Order and Divorce
On June 28, 2010, Kaine Horman filed for divorce and obtained a restraining order against Terri. He moved out of the family home the same period and took Kiara, then eighteen months old, with him. The divorce dragged for more than three years alongside the criminal investigation. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Henry Kantor finalized it on December 31, 2013, but held Kiara’s custody open for later proceedings. Under the decree, Terri was ordered to pay $224 per month in child support, Kaine kept the family’s Portland home, Terri received 73.3 percent of Kaine’s Intel 401(k) retirement plan, and Terri was required to maintain a $100,000 life insurance policy naming Kiara as the beneficiary.10OregonLive. The 2014 Custody Settlement
On June 3, 2014, Kaine Horman was formally awarded sole custody of Kiara through a settlement agreement. Kiara was five. The plan built contact back in stages. It was to begin with letters and cards, progress to videoconferencing, and only then move to in-person visits, capped at one or two hours and no more than twice per month. A professional supervisor had to be present at any face-to-face meeting to enforce “rules, boundaries and safeguards.” Before visits could begin at all, Kiara had to be enrolled in counseling with a developmental specialist, and Terri had to complete a parental training course.11OregonLive. The settlement carried forward the restraining order’s physical restrictions. Terri is barred from coming within 150 feet of Kaine, Kiara, the family home, Kaine’s Intel office, his gym, and Skyline Elementary School. She cannot enter or remove Kiara from school or daycare. Life After the Settlement
After losing custody and finalizing the divorce, Terri relocated to California. She has since remarried and goes by Terri Vazquez.13ABC News 4. Kiara has continued to live with Kaine in Portland. The file does not detail her schooling, her current age beyond what her 2008 birth implies, or whether the reintegration plan produced regular contact with her mother.
The Case Kiara’s Family Still Waits On
Kyron’s disappearance is still an open investigation. Multnomah County District Attorney Nathan Vasquez said in 2026, “A lack of news on the case does not mean a lack of progress.
