Logan Rogers Case: Capital Murder Charge, Bond, and Trial Date

Logan Rogers, a 28-year-old Florence, Alabama man, is charged with capital murder in the May 2025 killing of 38-year-old Autumn Strickland. Prosecutors in the Logan Rogers case allege he struck Strickland twice with her own car, drove her body to his property, and tried to burn her remains in a barrel. He has pleaded not guilty, is being held without bond in the Lauderdale County Jail, and the state is seeking the death penalty.¹

What Prosecutors Say Happened

According to District Attorney Chris Connolly, surveillance video showed Rogers and Strickland meeting by chance on a sidewalk outside the Stricklin Hotel in downtown Florence in the early morning hours of May 17, 2025, where Rogers asked her for a ride. Investigators have said there is no evidence the two knew each other before that night.²

Authorities allege Rogers took Strickland’s 2012 Kia Soul and intentionally struck her with it as she ran down North Wood Avenue around 2:08 a.m., then circled back and hit her a second time. A criminal complaint cited video evidence supporting the allegation that the act was intentional.³ After abandoning the car near Helton, Rogers is alleged to have returned roughly 30 minutes later in a pickup truck, loaded Strickland’s body, and driven it to his property on the 2200 block of North Wood Avenue, where prosecutors say he placed her remains in a barrel and tried to burn them.⁴

Asked about motive, Connolly said “there’s pure evil” and called the killing an intentional murder and robbery, referring to the alleged theft of Strickland’s vehicle.⁵

Arrest and the Discovery That Escalated the Case

Florence police arrested Rogers on May 20, 2025, on North Wood Avenue after tips from the community. He was initially charged with attempted murder. While executing a search warrant at the property where he was taken into custody, officers found human remains inside a burned barrel, and the charge was upgraded to murder. The remains were sent to a forensics lab for identification.⁴⁶

Why the Charge Became Capital Murder

In July 2025, a Lauderdale County grand jury upgraded the charge from murder to capital murder. Under Alabama law, a murder becomes a capital offense when it occurs in connection with certain other crimes, including robbery. The capital charge here rests on the allegation that Rogers killed Strickland in the course of stealing her vehicle.⁷ Connolly confirmed after the indictment that the state would seek the death penalty, citing the “seriousness and brutality” of the crime.⁸

Bond Denied Under Aniah’s Law

Rogers was denied bond under Alabama’s Aniah’s Law, which allows courts to refuse pretrial release in certain violent felony cases. Lauderdale County District Judge Will Motlow cited “the brutal nature of the alleged offense and the defendant’s history of domestic violence,” finding that no conditions could adequately ensure public safety.⁹

At the time of Strickland’s killing, Rogers was already awaiting trial on charges out of Marion County for making a terrorist threat and domestic violence involving his parents. His mother had obtained a protection-from-abuse order against him, describing violent behavior and threats toward her and Rogers’ father.⁹

Plea, Trial Date, and Current Status

Rogers was arraigned on August 5, 2025, before Judge Will Powell and pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors asked the court to order the collection of hair, saliva, and blood samples from him for forensic analysis. Because he faces the death penalty, Rogers has been appointed a second defense attorney, in keeping with Alabama’s requirement that capital defendants be represented by at least two qualified lawyers.¹⁰¹¹

The trial date has moved. At the August 2025 arraignment, Judge Powell indicated a realistic date would be sometime in 2027. By April 2026, attorneys on both sides set a target trial date of December 2026, with one report giving December 14, 2026, and the judge noting the trial is expected to run longer than a typical case.¹²¹³ A separate report from the same court date indicated Powell was planning for a summer 2027 trial, suggesting the December 2026 date is a target that could shift.⁸ Rogers remains in the Lauderdale County Jail without bond.

What a Capital Conviction Would Mean

A capital murder conviction in Alabama carries only two possible sentences: death or life in prison without the possibility of parole. After a guilty verdict, a separate penalty phase follows, in which the jury weighs aggravating and mitigating factors. A judge may impose a death sentence if at least 10 of 12 jurors recommend it; unanimity is not required.¹⁴

Who Autumn Strickland Was

Autumn Paige Strickland, 38, was a Florence resident originally from Florida who had been working as a self-employed house flipper and landlord. She had previously worked for Channel 12 News in West Palm Beach before moving to Alabama roughly two years earlier to work on rental properties with her mother, Lisa Franks Mack.² She was the mother of a daughter, Aspen, and had previously lost a son, Lane, to cancer. A Celebration of Life was held on June 28, 2025, at Somerville Baptist Church in Somerville, Alabama.¹⁵

Friend Lindsay Maldonado described Strickland as kind-hearted and full of life. “I’m just devastated,” Maldonado told a local news outlet. “It sounds like a Dateline or Crime Junkie episode, but it’s my friend.”²
