After the plaintiff relocated to California in February 2023, the complaint says, Elias gave her $10,000 in cash on arrival, then monthly payments of $2,000 to $3,000, along with luxury gifts from Gucci, Dior, and Bulgari. That summer, the complaint alleges, Elias told the plaintiff he was marrying his ex-girlfriend Maggy for “ministry purposes only” while continuing the sexual relationship with her. Elias’s Defamation Suit Against Online Critics

The complaint alleges Newton and Verdeana carried out a “malicious online crusade” against him, accusing him on social media of having “sacrificed his own brother for money and fame,” “killed people,” and operating an “occultic network.” Elias argues the accusations exploit cultural fears around witchcraft and have damaged his ministry. Newton responded with an anti-SLAPP motion under California Code of Civil Procedure Section 425.16, which allows quick dismissal of suits that target constitutionally protected speech.
