The lawsuit against Parker’s Kitchen over Mallory Beach’s death ended in July 2023 with an $18.5 million settlement funded almost entirely by the convenience store chain’s insurers. A second, separate lawsuit brought by the Beach family against Parker’s founder Greg Parker, alleging he orchestrated a harassment campaign to pressure them into dropping the first case, remains active as of mid-2026.
The Alcohol Sale That Started the Case
On the afternoon of February 23, 2019, 19-year-old Paul Murdaugh walked into a Parker’s Kitchen on Okatie Highway in Ridgeland, South Carolina, and bought alcohol using his older brother Buster Murdaugh’s driver’s license and his mother Maggie Murdaugh’s credit card. The clerk, Tajeeha Cohen, scanned the barcode on the ID and got a valid read.1WPDE. Hours later, Paul Murdaugh drove his father Alex Murdaugh’s boat into a bridge piling in Beaufort County while intoxicated. The Beach family, represented by attorney Mark Tinsley, sued Parker’s Corporation, founder Greg Parker, Alex Murdaugh, and other defendants. The theory was negligence: Parker’s had sold alcohol to a minor and failed to train its employees to verify identity beyond a barcode scan.2ABC News 4. Its attorneys called the transaction a “legal and valid sale” and noted that the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigated and declined to cite either Cohen or the company, because Paul had used a legitimate state-issued ID that happened to belong to his brother.4WJCL. Why Parker’s Faced Full Exposure at Trial
South Carolina’s joint and several liability doctrine shaped the entire case. If a jury found Parker’s even partially at fault, the company could be forced to pay the full damages award, including amounts attributable to Alex Murdaugh and his family. Parker’s defense attorney PK Shere called the rule “unfair,” saying it would leave the store paying damages meant to punish the Murdaughs.5CBS News. That exposure grew worse because Parker’s could not get itself untangled from the Murdaughs at trial. The company filed multiple motions to sever its case and move the trial out of Hampton County. Judge Daniel Hall denied them, and in December 2022 the South Carolina Court of Appeals also rejected Parker’s bid for a separate trial.1WPDE. How the Wrongful Death Case Was Resolved
In July 2023, before trial, Parker’s and the plaintiffs reached what the parties called a “global resolution” of all claims arising from the boat crash. The total was $18.5 million: $18 million from Parker’s insurance carriers and $500,000 from a boat insurance policy held by Alex Murdaugh.7ABC News 4. The money was divided among the Beach family and the four surviving passengers:
- Beach family: $15 million
- Morgan Doughty: $1.1 million
- Connor Cook: $1 million
- Anthony Cook: $1 million
- Miley Altman: $400,000
Shere said Parker’s settled to avoid the risk of an outsized verdict driven by the Murdaugh association and joint and several liability. The defense also expressed frustration that settlement terms became public, citing confidentiality provisions in the mediation agreement.2ABC News 4. The Second Lawsuit: Conspiracy and Harassment Claims
The settlement closed the wrongful death case but not the fight between the Beach family and Greg Parker. In December 2021, the Beaches filed a separate suit in Hampton County Court of Common Pleas, Renee S. Beach, et al. v. Gregory M. Parker, et al., alleging Parker and his associates ran a campaign to intimidate them into dropping the original case.
The complaint named Parker, Parker’s Corporation, in-house counsel Blake Greco, personal attorney Jason D’Cruz of BakerHostetler, journalist Vicky Ward, and others.9Greenville Online. Ward denied ever meeting Parker or his attorneys. She later signed an affidavit saying she had received the mediation video and photos not from Parker’s team but from Gregg Roman, an executive producer on the documentary, and that she did not know the materials were confidential.12The State. Greco and D’Cruz remain defendants. The Beaches allege both received the confidential mediation video from Parker’s outside counsel and then helped distribute the material and coordinate the online harassment campaign. Both attorneys argue their conduct is protected by attorney immunity because it fell within the scope of their representation. Where the Conspiracy Case Stands in 2026
In April 2025, Circuit Judge R. Keith Kelly denied Parker’s motions to dismiss the case, disqualify plaintiff attorney Mark Tinsley, and stay discovery. He ordered non-privileged materials produced within 30 days and set trial for the week of May 4, 2026, in Hampton County.13Greenville Online. That trial did not go forward. On June 5, 2026, Parker’s filed a nearly 40-page motion for summary judgment arguing the Beaches had not produced enough evidence to support the conspiracy or emotional distress claims. Parker’s also asked to move the case from Hampton County to Spartanburg County, again citing concerns that media coverage would prevent a fair jury.14WTOC. Depositions have complicated the plaintiffs’ case. Renee Beach and family friend Savannah Tuten acknowledged they lacked firsthand knowledge connecting Parker to the release of confidential materials. Reporter Liz Farrell’s deposition disclosed that Tinsley had shared a private YouTube link to a draft mediation video with her in 2020 and that Farrell helped recruit participants for focus groups observed from Tinsley’s office.11WSAV. The case has also swept in journalists who covered the Murdaugh saga. Podcaster Mandy Matney missed a March 27, 2026 deposition, citing safety concerns about the location after years of online threats. Judge Kelly ruled she had “disobeyed both a valid subpoena and this court’s order” and set a contempt hearing for May 15, 2026.15FITSNews.
