Marc Ferraiolo Case: Charges, Planned Attack, and Bodycam Footage

The Marc Ferraiolo case involves a New Jersey man charged with two counts of attempted murder of a police officer after allegedly ramming his car into patrol vehicles and trying to run down officers in Evesham Township on April 30, 2023. His wife, Ruth Patton, was charged alongside him with terroristic threats and obstruction of justice. Police said the couple had planned earlier that evening to kill two officers in retaliation for months of enforcement actions at their home.¹

What Happened That Night

Around 1:00 a.m. on April 30, 2023, Evesham officers working an unrelated crash on Taunton Lake Road watched a white Hyundai Genesis go past at roughly 80 mph in a 45-mph zone. They tried to stop the car at Willowbend and Evans roads, but the driver ran a red light and kept going. Officers recognized the vehicle, called off the pursuit, and obtained an arrest warrant for Ferraiolo on an eluding charge.¹

About an hour later, officers went to the couple’s home on Marlborough Avenue to serve the warrant. When Ferraiolo and Patton pulled into the driveway, Patton got out and began shouting violent threats at officers. Ferraiolo refused to leave the car.²

When an officer tried to break the driver’s-side window, Ferraiolo threw the car into reverse and slammed into a patrol cruiser, then accelerated forward and hit it again. Two officers on foot dove out of the way. Police said he rammed a patrol vehicle carrying K-9 Tango four times “with maximum force.”¹ He then drove across neighboring lawns, struck a second responding cruiser, continued east on Marlborough Avenue, and hit a third police car and a parked civilian vehicle near Azalea Terrace before his own car was disabled.³

Several officers had non-life-threatening injuries treated at the scene. K-9 Tango was taken to a veterinarian. Ferraiolo was pulled from the wrecked car through a broken window after reportedly suffering a seizure and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.⁴

Charges Filed

Ferraiolo, then 23, faced 14 charges, including two counts of attempted murder of a police officer, two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, eluding, criminal mischief, and injuring a police canine.⁵

Patton, 42, was charged with terroristic threats and obstruction of justice for allegedly interfering with officers during her husband’s arrest and threatening to kill them.⁶ She was already facing separate terroristic threats and disorderly conduct charges from an April 24, 2023, incident in which she allegedly threatened to kill a neighbor, and she was on pretrial monitoring for that case when the April 30 arrest happened.⁵

Police Say the Attack Was Planned

Evesham Police Chief Walt Miller described the incident as premeditated, not spontaneous. He said Ferraiolo and Patton had “hatched their plan to kill two officers earlier in the evening,” aimed not at specific officers but at “whoever they were able to encounter that night.”¹ Court papers cited a statement from Patton that her husband told her he “wished to kill two police officers by using the vehicle to run them over.”⁴

Miller called the attack “related and retaliatory,” tied to the couple’s anger over ongoing enforcement at their home. He said officers had been called to the Marlborough Avenue address many times and had issued more than 50 summonses in the months leading up to the arrest, mostly for lighting and zoning violations.⁷ Miller also said the outcome could easily have been fatal: “If those officers did not get out of the way as they did, the intent of Mr. Ferraiolo would have been carried out.”³

Bodycam and Ring Footage

Evesham police released bodycam and Ring surveillance footage on May 5, 2023, the same day the couple appeared in court. The video shows officers approaching the Hyundai in the driveway and ordering Ferraiolo out. He can be heard saying he wants to “get his mom” and refusing to comply. The car then lurches backward and forward into a cruiser, officers scramble away, and a series of crashes unfolds on the street. Footage also shows an officer checking on K-9 Tango inside a damaged patrol vehicle.⁴

Prior History With Neighbors and Police

The incident followed months of friction in the Heritage Village neighborhood. Neighbors reported ongoing property damage, threats, and harassment, along with outdoor lighting that resident Kate Stiles described as leaving the property “lit up like daylight.”⁷ Another neighbor, George Dougherty, said he had been complaining to town officials for 18 months and had emailed Evesham Mayor Jaclyn Veasy the Wednesday before the incident warning that the situation “will not end well.”¹

Ferraiolo’s prior record included a simple assault charge from August 2017, a September 2022 report listing him as a missing and endangered person who intended to “commit suicide by cop,” resisting arrest and eluding charges from December 2022, and simple assault and harassment charges from March 2023. He was described in court as a high school dropout who had been unemployed due to mental illness and under psychiatric care for three years. Patton, a former registered nurse, was pregnant with her second child at the time of the arrest and described as having a high-risk pregnancy.⁵

Held Without Release Pending Trial

Both defendants appeared before Superior Court Judge Terrence Cook on May 5, 2023. The judge ordered both held in jail until their cases were resolved. Regarding Ferraiolo, Judge Cook ruled that release would pose “an extreme risk of danger,” saying he showed “no respect for the law or for life” and that the weight of the evidence was “strong.”⁵

Patton’s defense attorney, Ryan Newmyer, sought her release, arguing she needed better healthcare for her high-risk pregnancy than jail could provide. Judge Cook denied the request, citing that she had been on pretrial monitoring for the April 24 terroristic threats case when the April 30 incident occurred. Assistant Prosecutor Cori D. Green noted that in the earlier case Patton had allegedly threatened to kill a neighbor. Patton was held in the Atlantic County Jail.⁵
