Marcia Norman Case: Handyman, Evidence, and Charges

The Marcia Norman murder case ended with the April 2025 arrest of Jeffrey Kian Zizz, the 47-year-old handyman who had worked on the 82-year-old Tenino, Washington woman’s property for roughly two years. Norman was last heard from on the evening of April 1, 2025. Eight days later, detectives excavated her body from beneath a newly built shed at an Olympia property where Zizz had been hired to work. She had been bound, beaten, and killed with a pneumatic nail gun, then partially encased in concrete. The Thurston County coroner called it the worst case of his career.¹

The Disappearance

Norman spoke to a friend on April 1 to confirm a nail appointment the next morning. She was last heard from around 6:30 p.m. that evening.² When she did not show for the appointment, the friend’s husband went to her home, got no answer, and contacted her family.³

Family arrived on April 4. Her purse, keys, wallet with cash, and credit cards were all inside. Dishes sat half-done. Nothing looked like a planned departure.² The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office opened a suspicious disappearance investigation.

The Handyman

Zizz had worked for Norman for one to two years and kept equipment in a detached shop on her property.⁴ He became a person of interest immediately.

His criminal record was already serious. In October 2021 he pleaded guilty to molesting three children under 15. Court records from August 2022 showed convictions for two counts of second-degree child molestation and one count of communication with a minor for immoral purposes. He was sentenced to nearly nine years but served 11 months on credit for time served, with six years of community custody to follow.² When Norman disappeared, there was an active warrant for his arrest for violating those release terms.¹

How the Case Broke

Zizz was cooperative at first. He told detectives he had dinner with Norman on April 1, went home around 8:30 or 9:00 p.m., went to bed, and stayed there until morning.⁵

Olympia’s Flock Safety license plate readers told a different story. Zizz’s truck was captured at the intersection of Lilly Road and Martin Way East at 3:02 a.m. and again at 7:03 a.m. on April 2. The early-morning shot showed a large round object in the bed. The later shot showed a large garbage can with a black liner.⁵

Confronted, Zizz revised his account. He now said he had gone back to Norman’s home around midnight to collect tools, then again later to retrieve a trailer, sleeping only briefly in between.⁶ On April 5 he failed a polygraph at the sheriff’s office. Soon after, he fled Washington in a roommate’s truck.⁷

He was arrested on April 7 in Missoula, Montana, after his truck struck an elk. He was initially held on the outstanding molestation-related warrant.⁷

Back in Washington, GPS data from equipment Zizz had rented led detectives to an Olympia property where he had been hired to build a shed. He had told the clients he needed an excavator to demolish an old shed and clear debris before building a new one in the same spot. Construction started April 2, the day after Norman was last seen.⁶ On April 8, cadaver dogs alerted on the bed and tailgate of Zizz’s truck and around the new shed.⁴ A warrant issued April 9 let them move the shed and dig. Norman’s remains were about 18 inches down, partially encased in concrete.¹ The Thurston County Coroner’s Office confirmed her identity on April 10.⁸ Investigators extradited Zizz from Montana on April 13.⁹

Evidence of a Plan

During an April 5 search of Zizz’s home, detectives seized a five-page typed letter. Sheriff Derek Sanders said it “meticulously planned out a burglary and sexual assault of a woman who is referred to as his customer.” The sheriff noted significant similarities between the letter and evidence in the Norman case, though officials said there was no evidence of sexual assault in this specific killing.¹⁴

Probable cause documents added another detail. Norman had previously told family that she woke one night to find Zizz standing at the foot of her bed. Questioned about it, Zizz admitted entering her room while she slept, saying he wanted to “rub her shoulder” and “speak with her.” He told detectives, “I did have thoughts about (Norman) romantically.”⁶ Norman reportedly told him afterward to keep things strictly professional.¹⁰

How She Died

Thurston County Coroner Gary Warnock determined the cause of death was combined blunt force and penetrating sharp force injuries to the head, with additional blunt force injuries to the torso and extremities.⁷ The penetrating injuries came from a pneumatic nail gun. Warnock found no specific pattern for the object that caused the blunt trauma.

Norman had been bound at the wrists and ankles with long black Velcro straps. Warnock said the injuries were inflicted while she was alive, and that death was not instantaneous but occurred over hours. Prosecutors called the injuries consistent with torture.⁴ Warnock told reporters it was the worst case he had seen in his career.¹

Charges and Court Status

Zizz was booked April 20, 2025, on first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping while armed with a deadly weapon, and unlawful disposal of human remains. He was separately booked on the outstanding second-degree child molestation matter and held without bail on both.¹¹

At an April 21 hearing before Thurston County Superior Court Judge Mary Sue Wilson, Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Rosemary Fitzgerald described Norman as “an 82-year-old woman, a member of this community, who, the defendant, over a two-year period befriended and knew lived alone.” Wilson called the allegations “a prepared plan and the execution” and found Zizz posed a “substantial likelihood of danger to the community.” She ordered him held without bail, barred contact with Norman’s family, and prohibited him from leaving the state or possessing firearms.⁵ His public defender was identified as Eli Duncan.

On April 23, prosecutors filed upgraded charges: two counts of first-degree murder, including premeditated murder, while armed with a deadly weapon, plus first-degree kidnapping and unlawful disposal of remains.⁴ At his May 6, 2025 arraignment, Zizz appeared by Zoom and pleaded not guilty to all charges.¹² Trial was scheduled for June 30, 2025.

Under Washington law, a conviction for a class A felony while armed with a deadly weapon other than a firearm carries a mandatory two-year sentencing enhancement that runs consecutively to the base sentence and cannot be reduced.¹³
