Mary J. Blige Divorce Settlement: Prenup, $30K Support, Infidelity

Mary J. Blige’s divorce settlement with her ex-husband and former manager Martin “Kendu” Isaacs was reached in March 2018 and signed by a Los Angeles judge on June 20, 2018, ending a bitter case in which a court had ordered her to pay $30,000 a month in temporary spousal support and had set aside the couple’s prenuptial agreement on the question of support.¹ The final terms were kept confidential, but Blige has since described the alimony as heavy enough to force her back on tour to pay it.

Why She Filed

Blige filed for divorce on July 28, 2016, citing irreconcilable differences after roughly 12 years of marriage.² Isaacs had served as her manager throughout the marriage, tangling their personal and professional finances. Blige was the primary earner; court documents indicated she brought in about $300,000 per month at the height of the marriage.³ From the outset she asked the court to block Isaacs from receiving spousal support.

The Prenup Fight

The couple had signed a prenuptial agreement two days before their December 2003 wedding. Blige argued it waived Isaacs’s right to spousal support and protected property she had acquired before the marriage.⁴ Isaacs called the agreement “immensely invalid, unenforceable and unconscionable,” claiming he had signed under duress because of the timing and did not fully understand what he was giving up.⁵

In July 2017, a judge sidelined the prenup on the spousal support question and ordered temporary support while the case continued.⁴ Whether the agreement shaped the confidential final settlement is not publicly known.

The $30,000 Spousal Support Order

Isaacs asked for $129,319 a month, saying he needed it to maintain the standard of living he had during the marriage. His itemized request included $60,000 in back rent, roughly $5,000 for his aging parents, and about $5,000 for his children from a prior relationship, along with thousands more in food and household costs.⁶ He also said he had become “unemployable” and that the stress of the divorce had required hospitalization.⁷

On June 8, 2017, the court ordered Blige to pay $30,000 per month, less than a quarter of what Isaacs sought. The judge found Isaacs was entitled to maintain the marital standard of living but called his requested amount “unreasonable.”⁸ The order applied retroactively to September 2016, and Blige was required to cover Isaacs’s attorney fees, bringing her additional obligation to $235,000.⁹ The judge noted that both spouses had lived “above their means” and owed millions in back taxes.⁶

Infidelity and Property Allegations

In 2017 filings, Blige alleged Isaacs had spent more than $420,000 of her money on “travel charges” tied to a woman with whom he was having an affair.⁷ Reports identified the woman as Starshell, a singer-songwriter who had been signed to Blige’s Matriarch Entertainment label.¹⁰ Both Isaacs’s attorney and Starshell denied the claims. “This is absolutely not true,” Starshell said.¹¹

Blige also alleged Isaacs refused to return her Grammy and other awards, along with two Mercedes-Benz vehicles.¹² She said she was the sole breadwinner and that the couple had piled up about $10 million in debt, including millions owed to the IRS and unrecouped label advances.⁴ Whether the awards or cars were ultimately returned is not part of any public record.

The Confidential Settlement

Rather than go to trial, Blige and Isaacs settled in early March 2018, just before a scheduled hearing. The case was pulled from the Los Angeles Superior Court calendar on March 5, 2018, and a judge signed the final decree on June 20, 2018.¹⁴

The specific settlement terms, including any permanent alimony figure and how property was divided, were never disclosed. The $30,000-per-month figure most often cited in coverage was the court-ordered temporary support; the final confidential agreement may have set different terms. The couple had no children together, so custody was not an issue.¹

What It Cost Her

Blige’s finances were already strained when she filed. Court records during the case showed she owed a total of $6.5 million in back taxes spanning 2008 to 2016, and an additional IRS lien of roughly $1.2 million was filed in 2019 for tax years 2016 and 2017.¹³¹⁴ According to one report, the temporary support payments ran for about two years before the settlement was finalized.¹⁵

Blige has spoken plainly about the aftermath. “I had nothing when I left out of that marriage and I had to work. I had to do everything to make that money to pay out the alimony,” she said in 2021.¹⁵ She told Angie Martinez the payments forced her back on tour, saying, “I didn’t have no more money to give because he had spent it all.” Her 2022 song “Rent Money,” featuring Dave East, was written about the alimony situation.¹⁶

She also took losses on real estate, selling her Saddle River, New Jersey, mansion in February 2022 for $5.5 million after buying it in 2008 for $12.3 million.³¹⁷
