Matt Lauer has never been sued by any of his accusers, and no criminal charges have ever been filed against him. The legal fallout from the Matt Lauer sexual misconduct allegations played out entirely outside a courtroom: NBC fired him in November 2017 after an internal complaint, his primary accuser Brooke Nevils received a seven-figure payment tied to a nondisclosure agreement, and his wife Annette Roque secured a divorce settlement worth up to $20 million. A defamation suit he hinted at against journalist Ronan Farrow never materialized.
Why No Criminal Charges Were Filed

Hofstra University law professor Julian Ku explained that U.S. prosecutors generally cannot charge American citizens for acts committed abroad, and the narrow exceptions, such as sex tourism laws involving minors, do not apply here. Russian authorities were never contacted at the time, so any investigation would have started from zero and required cooperation from the Russian government. Allegations from other women, including a former employee who told the New York Times that Lauer sexually assaulted her in his office in 2001, would face separate statute-of-limitations and evidentiary questions. None of those women has filed a civil suit either.
The Nevils NDA and Settlement
The closest thing to a civil resolution is the private agreement between Nevils and NBC. Nevils, a former NBC News producer, was the colleague whose November 27, 2017 complaint led to Lauer’s firing two days later.3NBC News. According to Ronan Farrow’s book Catch and Kill, the agreement required Nevils, her lawyer, and others close to her to “sign away their right to ever speak about the network,” and specifically barred her from disparaging NBC News Chairman Andy Lack, NBC News President Noah Oppenheim, or any other NBC employee.5Vice. The settlement was between Nevils and NBC. Lauer himself was not a party to it, and no separate civil claim against him has been reported. Farrow alleged that NBC had reached NDAs with at least seven women alleging harassment or discrimination, with “multiple” involving Lauer accusers, in the six to seven years before Sochi.6ABC News. Under public pressure in October 2019, NBCUniversal said any former employee who believed a confidentiality clause prevented them from discussing sexual harassment could contact the company for release from that obligation.8NBC News. The Firing and NBC’s Internal Review
The employment action was where the accountability actually landed. Attorney Ari Wilkenfeld brought Nevils’s complaint to NBC’s human resources and legal teams on November 27, 2017, describing conduct that began during the Sochi Olympics and continued back in the workplace. NBC terminated Lauer’s contract on November 29. In May 2018, NBCUniversal released the results of an internal review led by General Counsel Kim Harris with input from Davis Polk and Proskauer Rose. Investigators interviewed 68 current and former staff.9NBC News. The Defamation Suit That Never Came
When Farrow’s Catch and Kill made Nevils’s rape allegation public in October 2019, Lauer’s response was aggressive but stayed out of court. Through his attorney Libby Locke of Clare Locke LLP, he called the allegation “categorically false” and described the Sochi encounter as an “extramarital, but consensual, sexual encounter.” He acknowledged a sexual relationship with Nevils and insisted every act was mutual.12Variety. In May 2020, Lauer published a Mediaite op-ed accusing Farrow of acting as an “activist” and failing to contact key witnesses, and named four people he said would contradict Farrow’s account.14Mediaite. Lauer never filed or publicly threatened a defamation lawsuit against Farrow or his publisher.16Yahoo Entertainment. The Divorce Settlement
The one court proceeding that produced a concrete financial judgment was Lauer’s divorce. His wife, Annette Roque, had filed for divorce in 2006 and then withdrawn the petition; the couple separated after his firing. In August 2018, Lauer agreed to pay Roque up to $20 million as part of the settlement. A postnuptial agreement signed after the 2006 filing helped move the process along.18Page Six. A Suffolk County Supreme Court judge signed the divorce decree on September 5, 2019.19Entertainment Tonight.
