Max Hartley: Four Seasons Attack, Charges, and Case Status

Max Hartley is a 19-year-old from Avon, Ohio, who was arrested in March 2023 and charged with multiple felonies after allegedly attacking Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen and a woman who tried to help him outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. As of April 2025, Hartley had pleaded not guilty and no resolution to the case had been publicly reported.¹

The Attack Outside the Four Seasons

On the night of March 13, 2023, Allen, then 59, was smoking a cigarette near the valet area of the Four Seasons on North Fort Lauderdale Beach Boulevard. According to the Fort Lauderdale Police Department arrest report, Hartley had been hiding behind a pole watching Allen before charging at him at full speed and knocking him to the ground, causing Allen’s head to strike the pavement.²³ One account in the police report described Hartley as having “drop kicked” Allen and kicked him in the ribs, and said Allen screamed when Hartley began pulling at his right arm.

An unidentified woman who saw the attack ran over to help. Hartley allegedly turned on her, knocked her down, and struck her. When she tried to flee into the hotel lobby, he grabbed her by the hair and dragged her back onto the sidewalk.⁴

Property Damage and Arrest

After the assault, Hartley fled and went on a destructive spree in the surrounding area. He was observed damaging vehicles in a parking garage near the Conrad hotel and throwing chairs at the windows of a nearby restaurant, the Wine Garden on Breakers Avenue. The police report documented $5,500 in damage to three cars and $2,600 in damage to storm-proof windows and chairs at the restaurant.²

Officers apprehended Hartley a short distance from the hotel. They noted he appeared “very highly intoxicated” and was unresponsive to their commands, and that he had unrelated injuries to his head and chest at the time of his arrest. Multiple 911 callers described him as extremely intoxicated throughout the evening’s events.²⁴

The Charges Against Hartley

Hartley was initially booked on a charge of abuse of an elderly or disabled adult, rooted in Allen’s status as an amputee; Allen lost his left arm in a 1984 traffic accident.³ Prosecutors then filed a broader set of counts:

Aggravated battery, a felony, related to the assault on Allen.
Misdemeanor battery, a separate battery count.
Four counts of felony criminal mischief, stemming from the damage to vehicles and property.
Abuse of an elderly or disabled adult, based on Allen’s disability.⁵⁶

The case was handled through the Broward County court system in Florida.⁷

Who Max Hartley Is

Hartley is from Avon, Ohio, a suburb west of Cleveland, and was 19 when the attack occurred. He was in South Florida on spring break at the time. His attorney, Sam Halpern, said Hartley had “never been in trouble with the law before.” Reports described him as an all-around high school athlete who had played football, rugby, and recreational league basketball.⁴

No motive was ever publicly identified. Halpern did not comment on what provoked the attacks or whether Allen’s celebrity played any role, and the police report and 911 callers consistently pointed to extreme intoxication as a factor in Hartley’s behavior that night.⁴

Where the Case Stands

Hartley was released on bond shortly after his arrest, and as of a May 2023 report he had pleaded not guilty to the charges.⁶¹⁸
