Mazda class action lawsuits have produced three approved settlements covering infotainment glitches, defective Denso fuel pumps, and excessive oil consumption from failing valve stem seals, together reaching roughly 2.3 million vehicles. Cash reimbursement deadlines for all three have passed, but warranty extensions and free repairs remain available to eligible owners. Newer litigation over CX-90 brakes and steering, SKYACTIV engine coolant leaks, and missing features on the 2025 Mazda3 is still working through the courts.
Mazda Connect Infotainment Settlement
The largest consumer-facing Mazda case by vehicle count involved the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Owners reported screens that froze, rebooted in loops, dropped Bluetooth and GPS, and threw audio, video, and rear-view camera errors. The lawsuit, Duffy et al. v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc., alleged the problems affected about 1.7 million vehicles built between 2014 and 2023, and that Mazda had documented the issues in technical service bulletins going back to 2013 without issuing a recall.1Leagle. The court granted final approval on February 26, 2026, and payments to class members with approved claims began on April 29, 2026.3Mazda Infotainment Settlement. Frequently Asked Questions

What’s Still Available
The claim deadline for out-of-pocket reimbursement was August 1, 2025, and has passed. Current owners and lessees, however, still get a 24-month warranty extension with no mileage cap covering software updates and, if a dealer recommends it, repair or replacement of the Connectivity Master Unit. For vehicles whose original warranty had already expired, the extension began February 17, 2025.4Mazda Infotainment Settlement. Settlement Notice – Duffy et al. v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc.
Owners of 2014–2018 Mazda3 hatchbacks and 2016–2021 CX-3 vehicles were excluded from rear-view camera reimbursement because those vehicles were already covered by a separate July 2023 NHTSA recall.5ClassAction.org. Mazda Connect Infotainment Settlement Offers Reimbursements, Warranty Extensions
Denso Fuel Pump Settlement
The largest Mazda settlement by dollar value resolved claims over defective low-pressure fuel pumps made by Denso. The lawsuit, Vance et al. v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc. et al., alleged that a porous impeller inside the pumps could deform and cause engines to run rough, stall, shut down, or fail to start. Denso recalled the pumps in 2020, and Mazda followed with its own recall in November 2021, but plaintiffs argued Mazda’s recall left out models with the same defective parts.6ClassAction.org. Final approval came on March 4, 2025. The total value was estimated at over $172 million, covering nearly 631,000 Mazda vehicles from model years 2017 through 2020.7Mazda Fuel Pumps Settlement. Mazda Fuel Pumps Class Action Settlement
What’s Still Available
The reimbursement claim deadline was June 2, 2025, and has passed. Warranty benefits still apply automatically, without a claim form:
- More than 510,000 “Additional Vehicles” never included in the original recall get 15 years of prospective fuel pump coverage from the date of first use.
- About 120,000 “Recalled Vehicles” that already received replacement pumps get an extended warranty of 15 years or 150,000 miles on the new parts.
The program also covers free towing and loaner vehicles during covered repairs.7Mazda Fuel Pumps Settlement. Mazda Fuel Pumps Class Action Settlement
Valve Stem Seal Settlement
A third resolved case, Guthrie et al. v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc., targeted defective exhaust-side valve stem seals in 2.5-liter turbocharged engines. The seals allegedly caused excessive oil consumption, forcing owners to top off or change oil far more often than the standard 7,500-mile interval.8Mazda Valve Stem Seal Settlement. Frequently Asked Questions
Affected models are the 2021–2022 Mazda3, 2021–2022 CX-30, 2021 Mazda6, 2021 CX-5, and 2021 CX-9. Final approval came October 8, 2024.9CarComplaints.com. Mazda Valve Stem Seal Settlement
What’s Still Available
The reimbursement claim deadline was October 8, 2025, and has passed. Two forms of relief remain in place for eligible owners:
- Free replacement of the defective seals with a redesigned version for vehicles that qualify through an oil consumption test, a history of low-oil warnings, or stored diagnostic trouble codes.
- Extended powertrain warranty coverage. The original 60-month/60,000-mile warranty was extended to 84 months/84,000 miles, and for vehicles at or near that threshold as of October 8, 2024, to 96 months or 96,000 miles.
CX-90 Brake and Steering Lawsuit
The newest Mazda class action targets the 2024–2026 CX-90. Plaintiff James R. Burnell filed Burnell v. Mazda Motor Corporation on March 17, 2026, in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. The complaint alleges two defects: brakes that wear prematurely, squeal loudly, and judder, and a lane-keep assist system that steers forcefully against driver input rather than gently guiding the vehicle.10TopClassActions. Mazda Class Action Claims CX-90 SUVs Contain Brake, Lane Keep Defects
According to the complaint, Burnell took his 2024 CX-90 to authorized dealers repeatedly. They called the problems “normal,” performed repairs that didn’t resolve the issues, and eventually told him the brakes were “unfixable.” The suit alleges Mazda knew about both defects through pre-release testing, consumer complaints, and a January 2023 service bulletin addressing brake noise, judder, and dragging.11ClassAction.org. Burnell v. Mazda Motor Corporation – Complaint
An earlier CX-90 brake case brought by Daniel Green of New York in May 2025 settled in March 2026 on an individual basis only. Green’s personal claims were dismissed with prejudice; the broader class claims were dismissed without prejudice, meaning other CX-90 owners got no relief from that case and can still pursue their own claims.12CarComplaints.com. As of mid-2026, the Burnell case was still at the complaint stage. No response from Mazda or ruling had been recorded.13ClassAction.org. Class Action Suit Claims Mazda CX-90 Vehicles Contain Patently Dangerous Brake, Steering Defects
Other Active Lawsuits
Two other Mazda class actions were still pending in mid-2026.
Jarvis et al. v. Mazda Motor of America, Inc., filed in April 2024, alleges a defect in the SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine that causes structural weakness in the cylinder head near the exhaust manifold, producing coolant leaks that can lead to overheating, stalling, or engine failure. Affected models are the 2019–2020 CX-5, 2016–2020 CX-9, and 2018–2020 Mazda6.14ClassAction.org. Mazda Coolant Leak Lawsuit Says Defect Can Cause Engine Overheating, Failure
Johanson v. Mazda Motor of America Inc., filed in September 2025 in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, alleges that 2025 Mazda3 models were marketed with eight speakers and HD radio but delivered with six speakers and standard radio. The complaint quotes a March 2025 email from a Mazda district sales manager calling the discrepancy a “typo” on the window sticker. Claims include fraud, breach of warranty, and violations of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act and the Illinois Consumer Fraud Act.15TopClassActions. Class Action Lawsuit Claims Mazda3 Models Have Missing Features
An older case, Miyares et al. v. Mazda Motor Corporation, filed in 2019 over overheating forward-sensing cameras that caused Smart City Brake Support and Smart Brake Support systems in 2018–2020 Mazdas to activate without a real collision risk, has no recorded final outcome in the available reporting.16ClassAction.org. What to Do If You Own an Affected Mazda
If your vehicle falls within one of the three settled classes, contact an authorized Mazda dealer to confirm your VIN is enrolled in the applicable warranty extension or repair program. Cash reimbursement windows have closed, but the free repairs and extended coverage do not require a claim form and apply automatically to eligible vehicles. If you own a CX-90, a SKYACTIV-G 2.5T engine, or a 2025 Mazda3 with fewer speakers than advertised, keep your repair records and window sticker; those cases are still open and future class members will need documentation of what they were promised and what went wrong.
