Megan Holt’s Plea Deal in the Tay-K Trial: Terms, Testimony, and Parole

Megan Holt’s plea deal in the Tay-K case let her avoid a mandatory life sentence: she pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and accepted 20 years in a Texas prison in exchange for testifying truthfully against her co-defendants, including rapper Taymor “Tay-K” McIntyre.¹²

Who Megan Holt Is and What She Did

Holt was one of seven people involved in the July 26, 2016 home invasion at Zachary Beloate’s house in Mansfield, Texas. The target was drugs and money the group believed Beloate had. Holt helped organize the robbery: she messaged McIntyre asking for “straps” for a “lick,” slang for guns for a robbery. McIntyre then recruited three men — Latharian Merritt, Sean Robinson, and Jalen Bell — to carry out the break-in.³

The plan called for the women to enter first and unlock the doors for the armed men. Inside, Merritt shot 21-year-old Ethan Walker in the stomach as Walker stood with his hands raised. Robinson shot Beloate in the shoulder. Walker died at the hospital. No drugs or money were found in the house.⁴² Afterward, Holt lied to Mansfield police, presenting herself as one of the robbery victims.³

The Terms of the Plea Deal

Holt was originally charged with capital murder, which under Texas law carries an automatic sentence of life without parole. Prosecutors offered her and another female accomplice, Ariana Bharrat, a chance to plead down in return for cooperation. Both women pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery and agreed to testify truthfully against the remaining defendants. Holt received 20 years. Bharrat received 25.²

What Holt Testified to at Trial

Holt took the stand at McIntyre’s Tarrant County capital murder trial in July 2019. She walked jurors through the text messages in which she asked McIntyre for guns and described how he brought in Merritt, Robinson, and Bell. She said McIntyre used emojis to signal that Merritt “liked to shoot,” and that during a planning meeting Merritt described himself as “trigger happy.”³

Not everything she said hurt McIntyre. Holt testified that he did not carry a gun during the planning stage and was visibly anxious. “He was kind of scared,” she told the jury. “He wanted to make sure that his friends had his back if something was to go wrong because he was walking in there unarmed.”³

How Prosecutors and the Defense Used Her

Prosecutors used Holt’s account to show that McIntyre actively organized the robbery and knowingly recruited someone violent, arguing he should have foreseen that the crime could end in a killing. Defense attorney Jeff Kearney went at her credibility on cross-examination, telling jurors she was saying what prosecutors wanted to hear to escape a life sentence. Kearney also seized on her statements that McIntyre was unarmed and frightened, using them to argue his client never meant for anyone to die.⁵

The jury acquitted McIntyre of capital murder but convicted him of the lesser charge of murder, along with aggravated robbery counts, and sentenced him to 55 years.⁶

When Holt Becomes Eligible for Parole

Aggravated robbery is one of the Texas offenses formerly labeled “3g,” which carry stricter parole rules. A person convicted of aggravated robbery must serve at least half of the sentence before becoming eligible for parole, and is not eligible for mandatory supervision, the automatic early-release mechanism that applies to some other offenses.⁷ For Holt, that means at least 10 years behind bars on the 20-year term before the parole board can even consider her. Eligibility is not release; the board still has to grant it.

How Her Deal Compared to the Other Co-Defendants

Holt got the lightest adult sentence in the case. The outcomes for the others:

Latharian Merritt, identified as the person who shot Walker, was convicted of capital murder by a jury and received the mandatory sentence of life without parole.⁸
Sean Robinson, who shot Beloate, pleaded guilty to murder and got 40 years, with parole eligibility after 18. His attorney said the plea was reached to “salvage at least some of his life.”²
Jalen Bell pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated robbery and got 30 years, with parole eligibility after 15.⁹
Ariana Bharrat, the other cooperating female accomplice, got 25 years for aggravated robbery, five more than Holt.²
An unnamed juvenile accomplice was tried as a juvenile, found guilty of capital murder and two counts of aggravated robbery, and sentenced to 20 years of confinement.²
