The Melinda Gates divorce settlement has never been disclosed in full, but public filings and reporting put its value somewhere between $25 billion and $76 billion. The known pieces include several billion dollars in publicly traded stock transferred to Melinda French Gates in 2021, a separate $12.5 billion commitment tied to her 2024 departure from the couple’s foundation, and an undisclosed division of the rest of the couple’s assets under a private separation contract.1CNN. Bill and Melinda married in 1994, announced their split on May 3, 2021, and finalized the divorce in King County Superior Court on August 2, 2021. There was no prenuptial agreement. Neither party was ordered to pay spousal support, and no separation contract was filed with the court, which is why the full settlement figure has never been officially confirmed.1CNN. Why the Number Is Private
Washington is a community property state, so assets acquired during the marriage are generally considered jointly owned. That does not mean an automatic 50/50 split. Under RCW 26.09.080, courts are directed to make a “just and equitable” distribution of both community and separate property, weighing the length of the marriage, the nature of each spouse’s holdings, and each party’s economic circumstances.4Washington State Legislature. RCW 26.09.080 – Disposition of Property and Liabilities
The Gateses bypassed a court-ordered division entirely by resolving everything through a private separation contract. That document was never filed publicly, so the total value of what changed hands can only be pieced together from SEC filings, tax returns, and later reporting.
Stock Transfers Through Cascade Investment
The first hard numbers came from SEC filings within days of the announcement. Bill Gates’ investment vehicle, Cascade Investment, began moving large blocks of publicly traded stock into French Gates’ name.
In May 2021, Cascade transferred roughly $3 billion in shares, including 14.1 million shares of Canadian National Railway, 2.9 million shares of AutoNation, and stakes in Grupo Televisa and Coca-Cola Femsa.5Forbes. A third wave landed in August 2021: 3.3 million additional AutoNation shares worth about $387 million, 2.8 million Deere shares worth roughly $1 billion, and 9.5 million Canadian National Railway shares worth more than $1 billion. By early August 2021, the publicly disclosed transfers exceeded $5.7 billion, with Business Insider tracking the running total at around $6 billion.8Seattle Times. The $12.5 Billion Foundation Exit
The single largest known piece of the settlement was structured as a contingency inside the separation agreement. In July 2021, the couple agreed to a two-year trial period to see whether they could keep co-chairing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. If either decided it was not working, French Gates would resign and Bill Gates would pay $12.5 billion from his personal fortune toward her independent charitable work.9CNN. Melinda Gates Resigns as Gates Foundation Co-Chair
French Gates announced her resignation on May 13, 2024, effective June 7. She told Time she was “ready to be able to have full decisionmaking control about where all the funds go,” and said Bill Gates had offered changes to keep her, but her mind was made up.10Time. Melinda French Gates Interview
Tax filings reviewed by The New York Times in January 2026 revealed that Bill Gates donated $7.88 billion in 2024 to the Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, a private foundation French Gates established in 2022. That single payment was the largest tranche of the $12.5 billion commitment, and pushed the foundation’s assets from $604 million at the end of 2023 to roughly $7.4 billion.11New York Times. How Estimates Reach $25 Billion, $30 Billion, or $76 Billion
Different outlets have landed on very different totals depending on what they count.
Investopedia has placed the settlement at approximately $76 billion, reasoning that the couple’s combined net worth was roughly $152 billion at the time and that Washington’s community property framework points toward an equal split.2Investopedia. The Most Expensive Divorces in History
Forbes, which tracks assets French Gates is actually known to hold, has estimated the divorce settlement itself at $25 billion, with the additional $12.5 billion foundation payment on top, and calculates her total net worth at $30.2 billion as of mid-2026.15Forbes. Melinda French Gates Profile Time reported she holds $11.3 billion in personal wealth separate from the $12.5 billion earmarked for philanthropy.10Time. Melinda French Gates Interview
The gap between the Investopedia figure and the Forbes figure is the difference between a theoretical equal split of the entire fortune and a tally of assets that can be traced to her name. Neither number has been confirmed by the parties.
By any of these measures, the settlement ranks among the largest in history, rivaled mainly by the 2019 divorce of Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott, valued at $38.3 billion.2Investopedia. The Most Expensive Divorces in History

Impact on Bill Gates’ Ranking
At the time of the divorce in 2021, Forbes estimated Bill Gates’ net worth at $134 billion and ranked him No. 4 on the Forbes 400. By September 2025, his estimated net worth had fallen to $107 billion, dropping him out of the top ten for the first time in 34 years. Forbes attributed the decline to both the divorce transfers and his commitment to donate 99% of his fortune to the Gates Foundation.20Forbes.
