Melissa Howard Murder: DNA Break, Trial, and Appeal

The Melissa Howard murder was solved a decade after the fact when DNA on the victim’s sweatshirt identified a family friend, David Russell Holbrook Jr., as her killer. Howard, a 33-year-old single mother, was beaten and stabbed to death inside her Crestview, Florida home on January 6, 2006. Holbrook was arrested in November 2016, convicted of first-degree premeditated murder in February 2019, and sentenced to life in prison.¹

What Happened on January 6, 2006

Howard’s daughter, Keri Winkler, found her mother’s body that evening at 222 Tiffot Avenue in Crestview. Howard’s boyfriend, Christopher Cadenhead, was also at the house and placed the 911 call. He later testified he found her “face down” with “a pool of blood around her head.”² Howard had been beaten about the head, and her throat had been cut.³

The timing mattered. Howard had recently won a bitter custody fight over her 11-year-old son, Taylor. A court order requiring her ex-husband, Brian Howard, to relinquish custody was scheduled to take effect on January 6, the day her body was found.⁴

Why the Case Went Cold

Investigators had very little to work with. All blood at the scene belonged to Howard. There were no signs of forced entry. Everyone questioned in 2006, including Brian Howard, had what Chief Assistant State Attorney Bill Bishop later called “strong alibis”; Brian Howard’s was described as “airtight.” One Crestview police investigator speculated at the time that “a professional had killed her.”⁵ For nearly ten years, the family had no answers.

The DNA Break

In May 2015, the Crestview Police Department, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, and the State Attorney’s office reopened the case. State Attorney Bill Eddins later called it “a very extensive long-term investigation” involving “a re-examination of the evidence with more sophisticated investigative techniques than were available 10 years ago.”⁶

FDLE forensic expert Jennifer Hatler reexamined Howard’s clothing, taking 13 cuttings from the sweatshirt she was wearing when she was killed. After four years of work, Hatler identified foreign genetic material on the left side of the sweatshirt, under the arm. She excluded three men whose DNA was known to the case, including Brian Howard and the defendant’s brother, Michael Holbrook. The sample matched David Russell Holbrook Jr., with Hatler testifying that the probability the DNA belonged to someone else was “one in 39 million.”⁷

Who David Russell Holbrook Jr. Was

Holbrook, known as “Russell,” was not a stranger to the Howards. He and his then-wife Darlene had been part of a social circle with Melissa and Brian Howard. Friend Jennifer Knudson described the relationships as a “tangled web” after all the couples divorced around the same time. About two weeks before the murder, Howard told Knudson that Holbrook had shown up at her door unannounced, a visit both women found unsettling.³

Two days before Howard was killed, Holbrook came to her home again. Her attorney, Janis Burke, testified that Howard called her afterward in an agitated state and said Holbrook had told her: “You need to let that boy be with his father. And you need to let this go.”⁸ Howard told Burke, “I knew this was going to happen. I knew Brian was going to send one of his men over to scare me.”⁴ Holbrook acknowledged the visit in a February 2006 FDLE interview but said he had gone to ask about his estranged wife, Alison, who had moved in with Brian Howard.⁹ Taylor Howard testified at trial that he saw Holbrook’s truck leaving his father’s neighborhood the day of that confrontation.

An Okaloosa County grand jury indicted Holbrook, and on November 8, 2016, he was arrested at his job as a program manager and test engineer at Strategic Defense Solutions in Meridianville, Alabama. He waived extradition to Florida.³

The 2019 Trial

Trial began February 19, 2019, in Okaloosa County Circuit Court before Judge Michael Flowers. After seven days of testimony, a jury of nine women and three men deliberated about four hours before finding Holbrook guilty of first-degree premeditated murder on February 27.¹⁰

The Prosecution’s Case

State Attorney Clifton Drake built the case on the DNA match and a tight timeline. Cadenhead’s last call to Howard ended at 8:52 p.m. Walmart surveillance cameras captured Holbrook and his brother Michael at the store at 9:35 and 9:37 p.m. that night.⁸ Prosecutors alleged the footage showed Michael Holbrook appearing to wipe blood from his hands. They also played audio of Holbrook’s January 2006 police interviews and pointed to inconsistencies in his account of when he had last been to Howard’s home.¹⁰

The Defense’s Arguments

Defense attorney John Jarvis argued the state had shown no motive, noting Holbrook and Brian Howard “weren’t even that close.”⁸ He called the sweatshirt sample “touch DNA” that could have been transferred innocently, such as from a couch.¹¹ DNA expert Candy Zuleger testified for the defense that Hatler had “violated FDLE procedures” and that officers may have contaminated evidence by using only one pair of gloves at the scene. Hatler acknowledged she had inadvertently contaminated one sample by failing to clean scissors between cuttings but maintained that the sample matching Holbrook was reliable.⁷

Jarvis also pointed at Cadenhead, Howard’s married boyfriend and the last person known to have spoken to her that night. He suggested Cadenhead had a motive because Howard had told him she was pregnant, though her tubes were tied. Taylor Howard testified Cadenhead was at the home that evening and would not let him look inside a bag.⁸ The prosecution countered with a timeline: Cadenhead’s wife testified he arrived home between 9:00 and 9:15 p.m., and Howard’s daughter and her boyfriend did not reach the house until 10:50 to 11:00 p.m. Holbrook never confessed, in interviews or on wiretapped phone calls.

The Brother Who Was Never Charged

Michael Holbrook occupied an unusual place in the case. Court documents identified him as a “suspected accomplice” as recently as 2017, and in March 2017 the State Attorney’s Office executed a search warrant at his home for correspondence about the murder and obtained records of jail communications between the brothers.⁹ His DNA was excluded from the evidence on Howard’s clothing, and he was never charged.

The Appeal

In November 2019, Holbrook appeared with a new attorney and asked for a new trial, presenting three witnesses whose testimony the defense said refuted evidence from trial. The prosecution called it hearsay.¹² The First District Court of Appeal of Florida decided his appeal on December 16, 2020.¹³ The available record does not indicate his conviction was overturned. Holbrook remains sentenced to life in prison for the first-degree murder of Melissa Howard.
