Micah Sykes Murder Case: Charges, Arraignment, and Diagnosis

The Micah Sykes murder case involves a 31-year-old man charged with fatally stabbing his father, Grammy-nominated opera baritone Jubilant Sykes, inside the family’s Santa Monica home on the night of December 8, 2025. Micah Curtis Sykes was arrested at the scene, is being held without bail in Los Angeles County, and his arraignment has been postponed several times, most recently to August 6, 2026.¹

What Happened on December 8, 2025

At about 9:20 p.m., Santa Monica police received a 911 call from Cecelia Sykes, the victim’s wife, reporting a possible assault in progress at the family’s home in the 1700 block of Delaware Avenue.² Officers found Jubilant Sykes, 71, with critical injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was pronounced dead at the scene.³ The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner later listed his cause of death as multiple stab wounds.¹

Micah Sykes was found inside the home and taken into custody without incident. Investigators believe only the couple and their son were present. Santa Monica Police Lt. Lewis Gilmour said Cecelia Sykes told investigators she was not aware of any altercation or argument leading up to the stabbing, and there had been no prior recent domestic calls at the address.⁴

The Charges

On December 11, 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony complaint charging Micah Curtis Sykes with murder committed with malice aforethought.⁵ The complaint includes a sentence-enhancing allegation of using a deadly weapon and identifies three: a knife, garden shears, and a barbell.⁶ Prosecutors also allege he inflicted great bodily injury on a person 60 years of age or older.¹

Custody and Delayed Arraignment

Sykes was initially held on $4 million bail. At his December 11, 2025, appearance in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom, Deputy District Attorney Cesar Rodriguez asked that bail be revoked, citing public safety and telling the court that Sykes had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and was not being appropriately medicated at the time of the killing.⁵⁷ Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Theresa R. McGonigle ordered him held without bail and issued a protective order barring him from contacting his mother, Cecelia, whom prosecutors said witnessed the attack.³

His arraignment has been pushed back four times. It was first set for February 11, 2026, at the defense’s request, then rescheduled to April 6, 2026.⁶ In April, it was moved to June 4, 2026, with no plea entered,⁸ and on that date delayed again to August 6, 2026.¹ He remains jailed without bail.

Schizophrenia Diagnosis and Homelessness

Rodriguez told the court that Sykes was diagnosed with schizophrenia in 2007, when he would have been about 13 years old, and that he was either under-medicated or not following his doctor’s recommendations at the time of the stabbing.⁹³ The Sykes family confirmed to authorities that Micah had a history of mental illness, according to Lt. Gilmour, though police said they had not determined whether mental illness played a role in the attack.¹⁰

Prosecutors described Sykes as homeless, saying his parents’ home was his only place to stay, and police said it was unclear whether he had been living there full-time or visiting.⁴ Neighbors said that before the killing, Micah was known to ramble in public and shout to no one in particular.⁹

Earlier Incidents

Two prior incidents involving Micah Sykes appear in court and law enforcement records. In 2017, Sarah Bennett filed a restraining order petition against him on behalf of herself and several friends, alleging that Sykes, a former church acquaintance, had become obsessed with her, declared she was his “true love,” and sent her numerous texts and direct messages.¹¹ Bennett alleged that when a friend, Jason Lee, tried to intervene, Lee locked himself in his car to escape Sykes, and that weeks later Sykes tried to break down the door of Lee’s father’s home.⁹ The petition said Sykes had “been violent with his own family members” and posed “a real threat.” He was placed on an involuntary psychiatric hold as a result of the 2017 events.

On October 24, 2024, the LAPD’s Pacific Division arrested Sykes for felony grand larceny. He was released on his own recognizance the following day, and no charges were filed in Los Angeles Superior Court in connection with that arrest.⁷

Who Micah Sykes and Jubilant Sykes Are

Jubilant Sykes was a prominent baritone who earned a Grammy nomination during his career in opera and classical music. He was 71 when he was killed.

Micah Curtis Sykes, 31, grew up in Los Angeles. He attended UCLA as an undergraduate in art and later earned a Master of Fine Arts in photography from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, participating in the 2023 graduate exhibition.¹² Friends of the family and neighbors told reporters that in the years since, he had struggled with periods of homelessness and worsening mental health.
