The employee, identified in filings only as “Jane Doe,” complained that Irvin had harassed her, made sexually explicit and “lewd” comments, touched her arms without consent, and said he would “find her later in her work week.”2Dallas Morning News. Irvin sued on February 9, 2023, in Collin County, Texas, seeking $100 million for defamation and tortious interference with a business relationship.4Western Mass News. After Marriott moved to dismiss on jurisdictional grounds and sought a transfer to Arizona, Irvin’s team voluntarily dismissed the Texas case without prejudice on March 13, 2023, and refiled the next day in Maricopa County Superior Court, where the incident occurred.6NBC DFW. The Surveillance Video and Marriott’s Counter-Account
Security footage from the lobby became the centerpiece. A Texas judge granted Irvin expedited discovery and ordered Marriott to produce the video.8Fox 4 News. It showed Irvin approaching the employee, shaking her hand, speaking with her for roughly two minutes, and touching her arm twice; she stepped back a couple of paces before they shook hands again and parted.9Yahoo Sports. Marriott told a very different story. In a 28-page filing, the hotel’s lawyers described Irvin as “visibly intoxicated,” said he flagged the employee down, touched her arm without consent, and asked whether she knew anything about having a “big Black man inside of” her. The filing alleged Irvin later made lewd remarks about the employee to others, including slapping himself in the face three times. What It Cost Irvin in the Meantime
NFL Media placed Irvin on an indefinite suspension starting February 6, 2023, that lasted more than seven months. ESPN also canceled scheduled appearances on “First Take.” In court filings, Irvin said he had to cancel engagements with sponsors Cigna and PepsiCo, a fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors Project, and his annual charity football game, and that no new appearances had been booked during the suspension.12Front Office Sports. How the Case Ended
On September 10, 2023, the Dallas Morning News reported Irvin and Marriott had reached a settlement. The same day, NFL Media lifted Irvin’s suspension and he appeared on “NFL Gameday Morning” for the opening week of the 2023 season. Network vice president of communication Alex Riethmiller said, “Michael Irvin has been reinstated and will be a part of NFL Network’s coverage of the 2023 season.”2Dallas Morning News. The two sides describe the outcome in incompatible terms. Multiple outlets reported the settlement amount was not disclosed.13USA Today. Did Michael Irvin Get $25 Million?
No credible outlet has confirmed a $25 million payment, or any specific figure. Every major source that addressed the question said the terms were undisclosed, and Marriott’s own statement asserts it paid nothing.15Yahoo Sports. What Happened After the Case Closed
Irvin worked the full 2023 NFL season on air, but on May 3, 2024, NFL Network parted ways with him amid cost cuts and talent evaluations. He had been at the network since 2009 and was a fixture on “GameDay Morning.”16Washington Post. A Note on Earlier Allegations
The Marriott case is separate from two earlier accusations against Irvin. In March 2017, a woman alleged he drugged and sexually assaulted her at the W Hotel in Fort Lauderdale; Irvin denied it, and the Broward County State Attorney’s Office declined to file charges.19Dallas Morning News.
