Michelle Hadley Case: Frame-Up, Exoneration, and Settlement

The Michelle Hadley case is the 2016 Orange County frame-up in which a California graduate student spent 88 days in jail on stalking and attempted-rape charges before investigators determined that her ex-fiancé, deputy U.S. marshal Ian Diaz, and his new wife, Angela Diaz, had fabricated the entire scheme. Hadley was exonerated on January 9, 2017. Angela Diaz later pleaded guilty in state court and received five years in prison; Ian Diaz was convicted in federal court in 2023 and sentenced to 121 months.¹²

How the Frame-Up Worked

Hadley and Ian Diaz had bought a condominium together in Anaheim in June 2015, putting roughly $14,400 down on a mortgage of nearly $460,000. The engagement collapsed later that year, and by January 2016 Diaz had married Angela Connell. Hadley still held a financial stake in the condo, and federal prosecutors later concluded the scheme was designed to force her to give it up.³⁴

Starting in May 2016, Angela Diaz began telling Anaheim police she was receiving threatening emails and that strange men were arriving at the condo expecting “rape fantasy” encounters. She blamed Hadley. Investigators would later determine that Angela herself had created at least eight fake email accounts made to look like Hadley’s, posted Craigslist ads under the alias “Lilith Hadley” soliciting men to “force me into my house and take me down,” and sent threatening messages that mimicked Hadley’s writing style and even referenced Hadley’s parents’ contact information.⁵⁶⁷

On June 24, 2016, Angela called 911 to report she had been ambushed in the condo garage. Prosecutors later described the attack as a hoax. The couple also secured restraining orders against Hadley, which federal court records characterized as part of a “tortious campaign to ruin his ex-girlfriend’s life.”⁶³

The Charges and 88 Days in Jail

Hadley was arrested shortly after Angela’s June 2016 report and again in July, with bail set at $1 million. The charges were stacked and serious: stalking with a restraining order, criminal threats, attempted rape, and assault with intent to commit rape during a residential burglary, plus a protective-order violation and a crime-bail-crime enhancement.⁸⁷

She spent 88 days in jail. While she was locked up, Ian Diaz pushed police to keep her there, telling them she “needs to be in f—— cuffs and in a padded room.” Hadley was released on her own recognizance on October 7, 2016, while the investigation continued.¹⁷

How the Case Against Hadley Fell Apart

On September 30, 2016, Ian Diaz contacted police himself and told them he believed his own wife had framed Hadley. His motive for doing so has never been clear.⁶

Forensic work did the rest. Angela Diaz had used virtual private networks and proxy servers to disguise where the messages originated, but investigators peeled the layers back and traced the emails to three places: the Anaheim condo, Angela’s cellphone, and her father’s home in Arizona. Her devices held accounts for multiple VPN services and IP-masking apps. Detectives also noticed that the threats and Craigslist ads kept coming after Hadley was in jail and her devices were in police custody, which alone should have cleared her.⁷⁵

Investigators also learned Angela Diaz had a long history of elaborate deception, including faked pregnancies, forged doctor’s notes, a fabricated cervical cancer diagnosis, and impersonating an attorney. Hadley’s defense attorney, Michael Guisti, provided documentary evidence that helped prosecutors build the case against her.⁷

On January 9, 2017, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office dismissed every charge and declared Hadley fully exonerated. District Attorney Tony Rackauckas called her “an innocent victim of a diabolical scheme.”¹

Angela Diaz’s Conviction and Sentence

Phoenix police arrested Angela Diaz on January 6, 2017. Orange County prosecutors filed a long list of counts against her: two counts of kidnapping, two counts of false imprisonment, perjury, two counts of forgery, two counts of possession of a forged instrument, grand theft, one misdemeanor count of filing a false report with an agency, and 21 misdemeanor counts of filing a false police report.⁷

On October 17, 2017, she pleaded guilty to ten felonies, including false imprisonment and perjury, before Orange County Superior Court Judge Nicholas S. Thompson and was sentenced to five years in state prison. At sentencing, Rackauckas said she “showed no remorse, compassion, or empathy for the victim.” She served her time at the McFarland Female Community Reentry Facility.⁵⁹⁶

Ian Diaz’s Federal Conviction and 121-Month Sentence

Ian Diaz went years without being charged. As of late 2018, when Hadley filed her civil lawsuit, he still faced no criminal case. A federal grand jury indicted him in May 2021, and he was arrested that same month.⁶¹

On March 23, 2023, a federal jury in the Central District of California convicted him on all four counts: conspiracy to commit cyberstalking, cyberstalking, perjury, and obstruction of a government investigation. The perjury count came from a false answer he gave under oath in a civil deposition, denying he had accessed his then-wife’s accounts. The obstruction count was based on his deletion of an email account relevant to the federal investigation. Assistant Attorney General Kenneth Polite, Jr. said Diaz had “abused his position as a deputy U.S. Marshal to execute an intricate cyberstalking scheme.”¹⁰¹¹¹²

On June 30, 2023, he was sentenced to 121 months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release.²

Diaz appealed, arguing that the cyberstalking jury instructions were unconstitutionally overbroad, that deleting an email account should not count as obstruction under 18 U.S.C. § 1519, and that redacted deposition transcripts had deprived the jury of context on the perjury charge. On January 23, 2025, the Ninth Circuit rejected each argument and affirmed the conviction on every count. He then petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court for certiorari.¹¹¹³

The Anaheim Police Investigation and Civil Settlement

Hadley sued the City of Anaheim, four Anaheim police detectives (Michael Cunha, James Pewsey, Michael Lee, and William Segletes), and both Diazes. Filed in Orange County Superior Court on July 14, 2018, and removed to federal court that October, the complaint brought 15 claims, including false imprisonment, defamation, and civil rights violations under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. Hadley alleged officers “rushed to charge her” on “clearly doctored” evidence and served as a “weapon” in Diaz’s campaign, and she argued that Ian Diaz’s status as a federal law enforcement officer led Anaheim police to treat the couple’s claims with undue credibility.¹⁴¹⁶

In September 2020, U.S. District Judge David Carter denied the City of Anaheim’s motion for summary judgment on the unreasonable seizure, false imprisonment, and related claims, finding “genuine questions of material fact” about whether officers had probable cause. Judge Carter’s ruling laid out the exculpatory evidence Hadley said officers had ignored: warrant returns linking a Craigslist ad to Ian Diaz’s email account, threatening emails traced to the Diazes’ own IP address, no VPN applications on Hadley’s devices despite the emails being sent through VPNs, only one of multiple surveillance cameras at the condo complex checked, and threats that kept arriving while Hadley was jailed and her devices were with police. The court also rejected the officers’ qualified-immunity defense. Detective Michael Cunha testified he believed Angela Diaz had faked the attack and injured herself, yet the investigation into Hadley went on.¹⁵

The Anaheim City Council approved a settlement in April 2021, and a notice dismissing the remaining claims against the police defendants was filed on April 30, 2021. The terms were not publicly disclosed. Hadley was also finalizing a separate settlement with Angela Diaz. The case closed on May 18, 2021.¹⁶¹⁴

Where Hadley Is Now

After her release, Hadley moved from Orange County to New York to live with her sister. Her arrest record made it hard to find work, but she finished her MBA, took a marketing job with a beauty company, and later opened her own retail business. She has spoken about lasting trauma, difficulty trusting others, and financial fallout from bills that piled up while she was in jail. She has also raised money for a domestic violence shelter and helped pay for legal counsel for a woman she befriended while incarcerated.⁶¹

As of March 2023, she had become a mother to her first child, a baby girl. She has called being framed “probably the most traumatic experience of my life” and told Dateline NBC in 2017, “I’ll carry this around for the rest of my life.” Her story was featured in a May 2025 episode of the Investigation Discovery docuseries TOXIC, hosted by Elizabeth Chambers.¹⁹
