What Investigators Found
The day after Parker vanished, her Hummer H3 turned up abandoned in a parking lot at the Walden Palms Apartments on Orlando’s west side. Decals advertising her mobile airbrush-tanning business had been removed from the vehicle.3The Charley Project. Michelle Loree Parker
About three weeks later, a police dive team recovered Parker’s iPhone from beneath a bridge at Lake Conway in Belle Isle, roughly halfway between Smith’s condominium and his parents’ home on Rose Boulevard. The phone was still in its pink, blue, and black case and was described as in “remarkably good condition” after twenty days underwater. It was sent to forensic specialists for extraction of text messages, photos, and GPS data.7WFTV. Attorney: Missing Woman Michelle Parker’s Cellphone
In November 2013, Orlando Police released previously withheld red-light camera footage showing what they believed to be Parker’s Hummer at 8:55 p.m. on November 17, less than a mile from where the vehicle was later recovered. Authorities said they did not know who was driving. That same year, Detective Mike Moreschi publicly stated for the first time that investigators believed the crime was a “two-person situation,” indicating police thought whoever was responsible had not acted alone.8CBS News. The relationship had a documented history of conflict. In August 2009, Parker sought a domestic-violence injunction against Smith, alleging he had cursed at her and broken the passenger-side window of her truck while holding one of their fifteen-month-old children. Her filings also alleged prior violence, a threat to kidnap their children, and substance abuse. The injunction was dismissed in September 2009, and the couple later reconciled.11Orlando Sentinel. The Wrongful Death Lawsuit
In March 2013, Yvonne Stewart filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Smith, seeking damages in excess of $15,000. Attorney John Morgan, representing the Parker estate, said the civil suit was a way to obtain answers the stalled criminal investigation had not produced. “Given the passing of time, as well as some evidence we have discovered, we believe that Dale Smith is responsible for her death,” Morgan said.15People. Before Parker vanished, the twins had lived their entire lives with her at her parents’ home. After Smith was named the primary suspect, the Florida Department of Children and Families took the twins into protective custody on November 29, 2011. The next day, a juvenile court judge ruled there was “not sufficient evidence to remove the children from Smith’s care” and granted him custody, noting the decision could be revisited if new evidence emerged.19ABC News.
