Mike Jordan’s Lafayette Basketball Lawsuit: Claims and Outcome

The Mike Jordan Lafayette basketball lawsuit ended in a confidential settlement on June 10, 2024, closing a federal wrongful termination and racial discrimination case the former head men’s basketball coach had filed against Lafayette College seven months earlier. Jordan, hired in March 2022 and fired in March 2023 after a single 9–20 season, had sought $5 million in damages.¹²

Why Lafayette Fired Jordan

In February 2023, during Jordan’s first season, a former player submitted a written complaint about his coaching methods. Lafayette placed Jordan on paid leave and brought in an outside investigator. The following month, the college fired him, citing “gross misconduct and/or insubordination.”³

Jordan had signed a five-year contract when he was hired as the program’s 19th head coach on March 29, 2022, succeeding Fran O’Hanlon.³⁴

Jordan’s Claims

Jordan filed suit on November 14, 2023 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, case number 5:23-cv-04486, before Judge Joseph F. Leeson Jr. The complaint was classified as a civil rights employment-discrimination action under 42 U.S.C. § 1983.¹⁵

His central argument was that the college’s stated grounds for firing him were a “pretext to terminate Coach Jordan without having to pay him what he was owed under his contract and a pretext for racial discrimination.”¹ He said more than $980,000 remained on the deal, and that Lafayette never shared the investigator’s specific findings with him. Jordan disputed all the misconduct allegations and characterized the underlying complaint as criticism that his coaching was “too rigorous” and his language “too harsh.”³ Beyond the unpaid contract balance, he sought $5 million total, citing reputational harm and lost future earnings.²

Lafayette’s Response

Lafayette answered in January 2024, denying the allegations and moving for dismissal. Its filing went well beyond the earlier “gross misconduct” language. The college alleged that Jordan “verbally abused players including the use of terms that were sexist, racist and ableist,” that he “questioned the integrity of, and mocked, injured players who were following instructions of the medical staff,” and that he “retaliated against the student-athlete for voicing his concerns.”⁶

The college also said it had offered Jordan the chance to resign before terminating him, and argued that the 47 character references Jordan cited would not have had “first-hand knowledge” of the specific complaints against him.⁶

How the Case Ended

After the court denied Lafayette’s initial motion for a protective order in late April 2024, the parties agreed to a stipulated confidentiality order and moved toward resolution. On June 7, 2024, they held a telephone settlement conference before Magistrate Judge Pamela A. Carlos. Three days later, Judge Leeson signed an order dismissing the case with prejudice.⁷

Financial terms were not disclosed. Jordan’s attorney, Riley H. Ross III of Philadelphia-based Mincey Fitzpatrick Ross, said his client “is pleased that he could reach an amicable resolution with Lafayette College and close this chapter.”¹ Lafayette’s attorneys declined to comment.³

Where Things Stand

Because the settlement is confidential, the amount Lafayette paid, if any, is not public, and neither side conceded the underlying misconduct or discrimination claims on the record. The dismissal with prejudice ends the litigation and bars Jordan from refiling the same claims.⁷

As of the June 2024 announcement, Jordan had not returned to coaching. Ross said he remained “very eager to continue coaching the sport he loves.”³ At Lafayette, assistant Mike McGarvey, who had taken over on an acting basis and led the Leopards to upset wins over Lehigh and American in the 2023 Patriot League Tournament before a loss in the championship game, was formally named head coach on March 29, 2023.⁸
