The Monat lawsuit landscape covers several distinct fights: a consolidated federal class action from consumers who said the company’s hair products caused hair loss and scalp damage, a 2020 settlement with the Florida Attorney General over marketing claims, a round of defamation suits Monat itself filed against critics, and a 2024 breach-of-contract and defamation suit brought by the company’s own former president. The consumer class action closed in March 2024, the Florida regulatory matter resolved in August 2020, and the former president’s case was dismissed in January 2025. Terms in most of these resolutions were not disclosed.
The Hair Loss Class Actions
Starting in February 2018, consumers filed at least four federal class actions against Monat Global Corp. in Florida, Oklahoma, and Texas. The named cases included Whitmire v. Monat Global Corp., Alabaster v. Monat Global, Merritt v. Monat Global Corp., and Hoffpauir v. Monat Global Corp.1Truth in Advertising. Monat Hair Care Products More followed, including Maur v. The complaints overlapped. Plaintiffs said Monat marketed its shampoos and treatments as “safe,” “naturally-based,” and “suitable for all skin and hair types” while the products actually caused significant hair loss, scalp inflammation, burning, breakage, and bald spots. Several suits alleged that when customers reported hair loss, Monat told them it was a normal “detox period” during which scalp follicles enlarge, and encouraged them to keep using the products.3ClassAction.org. In June 2018 the cases were transferred to the Southern District of Florida and consolidated as multidistrict litigation under the caption In re: Monat Hair Care Products Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation, Case No. 1:18-md-02841, before Judge Darrin P. Gayles. Court records show the consolidated case was terminated on March 8, 2024. The records do not say whether the resolution was a settlement, dismissal, or something else, and the terms have not been made public.4CourtListener. The Florida Attorney General Settlement
In August 2020, Monat signed an Assurance of Voluntary Compliance with the Florida Attorney General resolving a state investigation into its marketing and sales practices. The company did not admit violating the law.5KTNV. Attorney General Cracks Down on Monat Hair Care Claims in Wake of 13 Investigation
Under the agreement, Monat was permanently barred from making false or misleading claims about the health, safety, performance, or efficacy of its products without competent and reliable scientific evidence. It specifically agreed to stop advertising that products were “clinically proven” to increase hair growth or reduce hair loss, stop blaming customer hair loss on a “detox period,” and stop using false before-and-after photos.6Fox Business. The settlement required Monat to refund consumers who bought covered products between June 2014 and August 2020. By the time the agreement was signed, roughly $83,000 in refunds had already been paid.7Florida Attorney General. Monat AVC Documents Monat also paid $250,000 to the Florida Department of Legal Affairs for attorney fees, investigative costs, and future enforcement.5KTNV. Any future violation would count as presumptive evidence of a breach of the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and expose Monat to an additional $250,000 in civil penalties. The Attorney General later reviewed sales representatives’ claims about a Monat sunscreen that was marketed with premature references to Skin Cancer Foundation approval.
Defamation Suits Monat Filed Against Critics
While consumers were suing the company, Monat was suing people who publicly criticized its products. The targets included hairstylists and a former distributor.
Monat sued Florida hairstylist Mags Kavanaugh in July 2017. A federal judge let the case go forward in January 2018, and the docket shows the case was terminated in June 2018; the available records do not describe the outcome.8CourtListener. The Former President’s Lawsuit
In April 2024, Stuart MacMillan, who had been president of Monat before resigning in June 2023, sued co-founders Rayner and Luis Urdaneta and the company. His complaint alleged breach of contract, defamation, and fraud, and described Monat as an “unprincipled syndicate” run “more like a cult than a legitimate business” by what he called a “mafia family” seeking to “unjustly enrich themselves.”11KTNV. MacMillan alleged the Urdanetas created a hostile work environment, made unsupported product-efficacy claims on social media, pushed formula changes to boost profit over objections from the company’s chief science officer, and engaged in financial misconduct including paying insiders for nonexistent jobs and using company credit cards for personal luxury spending.11KTNV. Monat denied the allegations. Its May 2024 counterclaim called MacMillan’s claims “patently false” and said he had been terminated for “gross mismanagement,” poor professional judgment, and attempting to sabotage the business. On January 27, 2025, both sides filed a joint stipulation of dismissal with prejudice, each party bearing its own legal costs. Whether money changed hands has not been disclosed.12BehindMLM. FTC Notices and Earnings-Claim Reviews
Monat’s marketing of its business opportunity has also drawn attention. The FTC sent the company formal notices in 2021 and 2023. The 2021 notice addressed deceptive trade practices tied to misrepresenting typical earnings and failing to disclose participants’ expenses. The 2023 notice warned that health, safety, and effectiveness claims require competent scientific evidence, and that disease-treatment claims require at least one randomized, controlled, double-blinded clinical trial. The notices are not enforcement actions on their own, but they put Monat on formal notice that future violations could carry civil penalties.13Truth in Advertising. Monat
The Direct Selling Self-Regulatory Council, part of BBB National Programs, opened two inquiries. The first, closed in August 2024, found that lifestyle imagery like incentive trips and vehicle bonuses in salesforce social posts amounted to unsubstantiated implied earnings claims, and noted that only 0.23% of Monat’s salesforce earned what could be considered career-level income. Monat removed posts, modified disclosures, and terminated two salesforce members who refused to take down unauthorized content.14BBB National Programs. DSSRC – Monat A second inquiry, administratively closed in April 2025, flagged posts using phrases like “financial freedom,” “unlimited income,” and specific dollar figures. FDA Inspection and Adverse Event Reports
The FDA received about 300 adverse event reports from consumers who said Monat products caused hair loss, thinning, scalp irritation, sores, and cystic acne.16WRTV. Co-Founder’s 2026 Arrest
Separate from the civil litigation, co-founder Luis Urdaneta, 64, was arrested on February 11, 2026, on an aggravated battery charge. Police allege he used his Rolls Royce to intentionally hit a construction worker in Coral Gables on January 9, 2026, after the worker, positioning a barricade for a street closure, told him to turn around. Urdaneta told police the worker “suddenly jumped in front of him and hit his windshield with an open hand” and that he left because he was scared. At his bond hearing the next morning, Judge Victoria Sigler set a $5,000 bond and ordered him to stay away from the victim.19Miami Herald.
