MongoDB is currently defending itself in three significant lawsuits: a patent infringement case it brought against open-source competitor FerretDB in Delaware, a securities fraud class action filed by shareholders in the Southern District of New York, and a wrongful death and disability discrimination suit brought by the parents of a former employee. Each case reaches a different part of MongoDB’s business — its patent portfolio, its financial disclosures, and its handling of an employee on medical leave.
The Patent Suit Against FerretDB
MongoDB filed its patent infringement complaint against FerretDB Inc. on May 23, 2025, in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware. The case, number 1:25-cv-00641, is before Judge Maryellen Noreika.1CourtListener. MongoDB, Inc. v. FerretDB Inc. The complaint accuses FerretDB of infringing eight MongoDB patents, including US 8,996,463 B2, US 9,262,462 B2, US 10,031,956 B2, and US 10,866,868 B2.2PACER Monitor. MongoDB, Inc. v. FerretDB Inc. MongoDB says the patents cover the processing and optimization of aggregation pipelines and functionality that improves the reliability of write operations, and it accused FerretDB in a company blog post of marketing its product as a drop-in MongoDB replacement and engaging in “unauthorized misappropriation” of its intellectual property.3MongoDB. FerretDB is a stateless proxy that translates MongoDB wire protocol queries into SQL and runs them against PostgreSQL. Its position has been that it uses none of MongoDB’s source code.4Chris Mellor – Substack. MongoDB FerretDB Clash Over Open Source That defense does not directly answer the patent claims, which turn on whether FerretDB practices the patented methods regardless of the code it runs.
FerretDB answered the complaint on September 17, 2025, and filed an amended answer with counterclaims on November 5, 2025. Those counterclaims include tortious interference with prospective business relationships, tied to letters MongoDB reportedly sent to FerretDB’s cloud partners such as SAP, Vultr, and Scaleway warning that their use of FerretDB was illegal.1CourtListener. MongoDB FerretDB Clash Over Open Source MongoDB moved to dismiss that counterclaim on December 3, 2025, and briefing wrapped in early January 2026. As of mid-2026 the court had not yet ruled.
On April 28, 2026, Judge Noreika ordered the parties to confer on a scheduling order within thirty days covering claim construction, final infringement and invalidity contentions, and trial timing. In May 2026, FerretDB’s counsel moved to withdraw, and no replacement attorneys had appeared on the docket as of late that month.2PACER Monitor. MongoDB, Inc. v. FerretDB Inc. The Securities Fraud Class Action
MongoDB, CEO Dev Ittycheria, and former CFO Michael Gordon are defendants in a securities fraud class action filed on July 9, 2024, in the Southern District of New York before Judge Gregory H. Woods, case number 1:24-cv-05191. The class covers shareholders who purchased MongoDB stock between August 31, 2023, and May 30, 2024.5Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse. Plaintiffs allege MongoDB’s leadership made misleading statements about revenue while restructuring the sales force incentive program. MongoDB publicly described the restructuring as reducing friction in acquiring new customers and boosting workload acquisition among existing ones. The complaint alleges the changes instead produced a near-total loss of upfront customer commitments, a significant reduction in actionable sales intelligence, and slowed enrollment and revenue growth.7Fintech Futures. Two disclosures anchor the case. On March 7, 2024, MongoDB projected near-zero revenue from unused Atlas commitments in fiscal 2025, roughly a $40 million decrease, and cut its growth outlook; the stock fell from $412.01 to $383.42, about 7%.7Fintech Futures. Lead plaintiffs and counsel were appointed on November 12, 2024, and an amended complaint followed on January 27, 2025.5Stanford Law School Securities Class Action Clearinghouse. MongoDB, Inc. Securities Litigation On April 30, 2026, Judge Woods denied MongoDB’s motion to dismiss in part, finding plaintiffs had plausibly alleged actionable omissions. The court cited statements by Ittycheria about “acquiring high-quality workloads” and by finance chief Serge Tanjga about the continuity of MongoDB’s financial model, along with omissions regarding the impact of sales restructuring.8Market Chameleon. The Wrongful Death and Disability Discrimination Suit
In December 2025, the parents of former MongoDB employee Annie Surman sued the company in federal court, case number 25-cv-1833, alleging its treatment of their daughter while she was on disability leave contributed to her death by suicide. The complaint asserts violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the New York State Human Rights Law, and the New York City Human Rights Law, along with wrongful death and negligent infliction of emotional distress claims.10Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP. According to the complaint, Surman took disability leave in the spring of 2024 for mental health issues she attributed to a toxic work environment at MongoDB. On July 31, 2024, the company told her she had eight days to return to work or face termination, and her health insurance was canceled the same day. Her family asked MongoDB for additional time so she could consult a doctor about a return-to-work plan. She was fired on August 8, 2024. The complaint states Surman attempted suicide the night of her firing and died on September 13, 2024, citing “the shame of being fired from her job.”10Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP.
