What the Lawsuit Alleged

The suit focused on a product Mr. S Leather sold as “The Jaw Master Gag.” According to the complaint, the gag contained di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, or DEHP, a plasticizer California has identified since 2003 as causing reproductive harm. The Jaw Master Gag was built on a Jennings mouth gag, a metal medical device that holds the jaw open. Mr. S Leather CEO Jonathan Schroder said the company had a vendor apply a rubber coating to protect users’ teeth, and the DEHP was in that coating.3San Francisco Chronicle. Proposition 65 does not ban DEHP. It requires a clear warning before consumer exposure, and it authorizes citizen suits and civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day for each violation. The Company’s Response
Schroder said Mr. S Leather had already pulled the Jaw Master Gag from its store shelves and website before the lawsuit was filed. He said the company had not known the rubber contained a Prop 65-listed chemical and acknowledged that “proper labelling was not caught during our product development.”4Yahoo News. In a statement to the San Francisco Chronicle, the company described the issue as an inadvertent labeling gap and noted that many common consumer products contain chemicals requiring Prop 65 warnings. “Our products center around people enjoying their bodies, and we treat safety seriously, even if you are using extreme things in the bedroom,” the company said.3San Francisco Chronicle. How the Case Was Resolved
The case did not go to trial. Records maintained by the California Attorney General’s office show the parties reached a settlement on December 23, 2025, with a final judgment entered on April 10, 2026. The total payment was $21,000, made up of $2,500 in civil penalties and $18,500 in attorney’s fees and costs paid to Seven Hills LLP. The settlement also required Mr. S Leather to implement reformulation or warnings for products containing DEHP going forward.1California Department of Justice. An Earlier Prop 65 Notice From 2017
The 2025 lawsuit was not the first DEHP complaint against Mr. S Leather. In March 2017, an enforcement entity called SHEFA LMV Inc. filed a sixty-day notice of violation with the California Attorney General’s office, alleging that Mr. S Leather sold two bondage tape products, a “Static Rubber Bondage Tape” and a “PVC Bondage Tape,” containing DEHP without required warnings.5California Department of Justice.
