MUBI Auto-Renewal Settlement: Eligibility, Payouts, and Filing

If you subscribed to MUBI in California and were charged for at least one automatic renewal between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2025, you may be entitled to a cash payment from the MUBI auto-renewal settlement. The streaming service agreed to pay $1.6 million to resolve a class action claiming it failed to properly disclose that memberships would renew automatically. Claims must be filed by June 9, 2026 at MUBISettlement.com.¹

Who Qualifies

The settlement class covers California residents who meet all of these conditions:²

Signed up for a MUBI subscription on or after April 1, 2021.
Had a subscription that renewed at least once between April 1, 2021 and May 31, 2025.
Did not receive a full refund from MUBI for all renewal charges.

Government entities, MUBI’s officers and affiliates, the attorneys involved in the case, the presiding judge and judicial staff, and anyone who opts out are excluded from the class.³

Court records estimate about 37,786 people fall within the class.⁴

How Much You Could Get

The $1.6 million fund is non-reversionary, meaning MUBI cannot claw back any leftover money. Several amounts come off the top before payments to claimants:

Attorney fees of up to 25% of the fund, or $400,000.
Litigation expenses estimated at roughly $25,000.
A service award of up to $5,000 for the named plaintiff, Cesar Cejudo.
Administration costs paid to Kroll Settlement Administration for notice and claims processing.

After those deductions, one estimate puts the net available to class members at approximately $1.1 million to $1.2 million.⁵ Every valid claimant receives an equal share, so the individual payout depends entirely on how many people file. Fewer claims mean larger checks; more claims mean smaller ones.³

How To File a Claim

You have two options. File online at MUBISettlement.com using the class member ID printed on the notice you received, or mail a completed paper claim form to the settlement administrator.⁴

No proof of purchase is required. You will need to attest, under penalty of perjury, that you meet the class definition.⁶ The claim form asks you to choose between a paper check or an electronic transfer for your payment.²

Class notice went out around April 11, 2026, mostly by email to addresses MUBI had on file. Where emails bounced or none were on record, Kroll mailed postcards instead.⁷ If you think you qualify but never received a notice, contact Kroll at 833-319-1847 or through the contact form on the settlement website.⁸

Deadlines and What Happens Next

June 9, 2026 is the deadline to do any of three things: file a claim, opt out of the settlement, or object to it.¹ If you do nothing, you remain in the class and give up your right to sue MUBI separately over these claims, but you also collect no money.

The final approval hearing before Judge Beth Labson Freeman in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California is scheduled for July 16, 2026 at 9:00 a.m.⁹ If the court grants final approval and no appeals are filed, payments will follow. The settlement notice warns that appeals, if any are filed, could add “perhaps more than a year” to that timeline.³

What the Lawsuit Alleged

Cesar Cejudo filed the complaint on April 25, 2025 in federal court in the Northern District of California, case number 5:25-CV-03652-BLF. The suit accused MUBI of violating three California consumer-protection statutes: the Automatic Renewal Law, the Unfair Competition Law, and the False Advertising Law.⁴

According to the complaint, MUBI failed to provide clear and conspicuous notice that memberships would renew automatically, did not display renewal terms close enough to the subscribe button, and charged subscribers for renewals without first obtaining their affirmative consent.⁷ The suit also alleged MUBI did not make clear that subscriptions would continue until actively canceled and did not explain its cancellation policy in plain terms.¹⁰

MUBI has not admitted any wrongdoing as part of the settlement.¹ Judge Freeman granted preliminary approval on March 12, 2026, and the motion was unopposed.⁷
